Personal Theory on Keeping Relationships

In 2012, Neil Gaiman gave an epic keynote address during the commencement rites of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. What struck me most is his piece of wisdom about the 3 things why people keep on hiring or continue your employment - a good personality, being on time and delivering excellent work. He further notes that you don’t need all three but have at least 2 out of 3. He shares that people will tolerate your repulsive personality if you are punctual and you deliver excellent results. People don’t mind you being late if it’s a pleasure to work with you and you give excellent results. Lastly, people won’t mind if you gave average results as long as you’re on time and it’s a pleasure to work with you.

I have a similar theory about relationships. I believe there are three things that keep people caring about you as a friend, or, dare I say, keep people loving you - good looks, good personality and reliability. Similar to Neil Gaiman’s theory, I believe you don’t need all three and just have 2 out of 3 to keep relationships. People will tolerate your average or bad looks if you have a good personality that it’s always a blast hanging out with you and you are a reliable source of money, advice, trust and other forms of physical, financial or emotional support. People will tolerate your annoying or repulsive personality if you look like someone straight out of a magazine and you are reliable as the first scenario. Lastly, people will tolerate your uselessness in their lives if you have good looks and you’re great to be with.

So if you’re freakin’ ugly, with a bad personality and have no use in the world - I think it’s about time to re-evaluate your life.
