Family wasn’t something that Mary really knew. She knew the family she chose which was her friends and Kitty. Her nearest and dearest were all she needed in life and Adam was very much one of those people now. He’d been one of the few people that she could say had been a consistent person in her life - whether they were acquaintances, friends or something more.
“Yeah he’s a blast to have around. He’s quite the character to live with” she laughed. Hearing Adam saying that he loved Kitty had Mary’s hear swell. To now that her dog and him have the mutual adoration of each other only helped fuel the growing feelings she had for him “He loves you too. You entertain him and play with him when he runs to you, not many people do that. He likes having someone else around” she smiled, looking over at Adam “I think he gets bored of me” she joked. Following on from his comment about Austin, Mary felt her cheeks furiously burning with a blush. She bit her bottom lip to try and hold back the beaming smile that was making its way onto her face. “I think she’d linger” she said, looking back up at Adam hoping that she had picked up on his subtle message correctly.
“You are a better man and it’s not your fault that her horrible actions had an influence on you.” she said reassuringly, gently holding his face in her hands “You’re so much better than you know.” She needed him to know that. Whoever he was in the past didn’t matter, it was who he was now and who he chose to be “We all take time to work on ourselves, just now that you don’t have to do it alone if you don’t want to. I’m here if you need me for anything.”
~
“He is.” Adam agreed with a bright smile. The dog trusted him from the beginning, something he worried for after becoming a person he didn’t want to be. Maybe Kitty was able to sense that wasn’t his true character at all. Maybe that’s why the dog had given him another chance. “I like running with him too, gives me energy that I sometimes lack for the day. It’s like being near him fills me with happiness.” He chuckled. “I doubt he’ll ever get bored of you.”
‘You are too amazing’, he thought. He noticed the blush and found himself feeling a bit warm to know he could give her such a reaction. It gave him hope for the rest of the date. At least now he knew he could consider it one. “Then I hope we’ll give them something worthy to gossip about.” Adam said teasingly, a way to tell her he received her message.
“Yet, I wished it didn’t. The anger - it shouldn’t be a part of me, or at least not still. Therapy says I’m making progress, and I am the staff says I smile more but I can still feel it.” And it worried him. “I still feel anger for what she has done, and that anger doesn’t know a proper escape.” He explains, hoping she understood what he was trying to say. “It gets better when I’m with you and Kitty, but I worry for the times in the café when I don’t really have a thing to calm me down. I’m wondering of getting a dog myself - it’s a huge responsibility but I found that Kitty really has his way of making me feel at peace.”
“Thank you Mary, know that I’m here for you as well whenever you need it. We’re in this together right?”
Guilt | Open starter
“ i know i’m guilty of something ”
Adam admitted. Today was one of those bad days. The one where he wallowed in self pity. Where he wondered if Agatha's behavior wasn't his own fault. That the way he had chased away his staff has been unforgivable. "I'm guilty of becoming a beast that didn't treasure the people around him."

Alice’s eyes positively lit up; there were so many layers to this Mount Olympus cake. Their brain was running at a mile-a-minute trying to piece together all the ideas, and very quickly Alice was beginning to imagine some over-the-top, less than plausible things. They really would have to do some investigating. “Aphrodite? Like the Goddess of Love?” Alice asked. “Are they as lovely as the name suggests? Oh, I wonder if they have others in the family too! Like, uh… Hera, or Icarus! Or a three headed dog! Do they have dogs guarding any parts of the bar? That would be so cool!” And that was it. Alice’s imagination was sliding down a huge tangent, and they barely heard what Adam said next.
Snap out of it Alice! You’re talking about the festival, get back on track.
“A new product… Goodness, I hope they aren’t going to try and sell that stuff! It was horrible! I don’t think they will be getting any good reviews on– well, whatever it was. It’s a zero out of ten from me!” Alice shook their head quickly, waving their hand to rid themself of the thought. They also couldn’t understand why anyone would make a b-line for a cafe after coming out of a bar, but they supposed Adam knew more on the subject than they did. “Those all seem like perfectly valid reasons to be banned,” they mused. “What if someone did something more outlandish? You should be prepared for that too. You never know when someone might bring a flamingo into the store, and if it isn’t in your policy, how will you know what to do? Or, rather, if you try to ban them and it isn’t written in… in writing, then they can argue against you until you both turn blue in the face.”
-
Adam wasn’t really into greek mythology but he knew some characters. “Yeah, she is named after the goddess of love. Mom was a hippie and thought it was funny something about her dad but she didn’t go too deeply into it.” He shrugged. “I don’t know that much about her family but you can ask her if you ever get to meet her, you won’t miss her she is a bit of the sensual type.” Aphrodite would have flirted with pretty much everyone in the bar, she had stopped for a while but returned not too long. Perhaps she had her heart broken because it didn’t seem like she enjoyed it as much as she had before.
“I barely remember anything from that period, aside from the coffee being horrible.” Perhaps for Adam that had been the biggest nightmare of them all. “If someone comes in with a flamingo they can get out with a flamingo.” He might have strangled the bird if they weren’t endangered. He flipped out his phone. “Guess I’ll just kill it if i can’t get rid of it - it’s not endangered in 2020.”

“Yeah, well, family isn’t always great and you know how stubborn Victor can be at times, he’d never admit I was right if we were in a debate” Victor was as stubborn as she was and their heated debates always ended in a stalemate. “I’m really glad to hear you’ve found peace. You’ve been smiling more lately, it’s great to see you in a happier place” she meant that. She didn’t know what was the cause of Adam’s positive changes in life but Babette was thrilled to hear he was feeling in a better place than before. “Chocolate is the one vice I refuse to give up…and wine, but still”
“That’s because Victor thinks he can be charming like that.” Adam teased. They had an interesting dynamic. “I wasn’t even aware I have been smiling more. I still feel like Charles is terrified by me.” He bit his lip feeling the guilt and frustration over it. “Guess meeting someone you want to be nicer for, helps.” He couldn’t help but smile whenever he thought about Mary. “I honestly wouldn’t have thought you to be a wine girl.”

The Mount Olympus christmas card list was practically elite in itself. Rarely anyone got listed but there was no harm in adding Adam and his Café. Hayden actually didn’t mind the guy and the Cafés goods kept him and his staff at the bar wired awake, so it was a win win. “Well that saying always was ‘be the change you want to be’ so you’re on track with that. “Was there any reason to why you decided to make that change now?”
“You can request to renew it and if she’s contacted you throughout the restraining order that’s a breach in the terms. She gave you hell in the past, make her pay for it now. Shitty people deserve shitty things.”
~
With Adam only his parents and staff were listed to get a christmas list but he understood the importance of networking. Seeing he got plenty of beers at Olympus, he didn’t really mind the exchange either. Though people found Hayden more than terrifying, Adam felt the man had a charm however. “I guess you can say that I wanted to be better than my ex, like lift the control she has over me - and I suppose a certain lady helped me with it as well.”
“I’m not sure the restraining order is still in place.” Adam admitted. “Though I like to think it is to save me the worry of her jumping through my window. I haven’t heard of her in months so maybe she gave up?”

As far as Mary was concerned, everyone in this world had different dynamics or circumstances when it came to family and she wasn’t going to judge anyone. Family doesn’t define a person. Mary picked her family and that was her close friends and Kitty. Anyone Kitty approved of was someone that Mary knew was someone worth knowing.
Mary leaned closer to see the picture on his phone and she didn’t know what she found cuter, the photo of her goofball of a dog or the fact Adam had photos of her dog on his phone. “That’s adorable” she cooed “I’d love that, thank you” She could never have enough photos of Kitty. She wondered how many photos of Kitty he had, if he was as bad as her when it came to taking photos of the charismatic dog. “I guess we’ll never know since we made it on time” Normally she’d test the ghost theory out of curiosity but being late for movies wasn’t something she liked to do. She liked watching the trailers and seeing the lights go down before the film started.
She felt a pang in her heart at him mentioning his ex. Mary knew practically nothing about the woman other than what Adam has divulged when she found him having a panic attack what felt like eons ago and all she took away from it was that the woman was vile and had to be kept away from him at all costs. “I’m sorry she controlled you like that Adam, I really am.” she said, giving his hand a supportive squeeze. “I’m glad you got away from that environment and got to explore the things you wanted to”
~
Adam wasn’t really sure if his family was a bad one, sure they were a bit judgemental and business oriented. They liked to control his life a bit and they could be harsh at times. But in a way Adam just saw it as them caring for his future. That shouldn’t be a bad thing necessarily. He felt quite lucky however when it came to meeting Mary and meeting Kitty. Both were adorable in their own ways.
He chuckled sweetly. “Well it’s hard to resist to not take any photo’s of Kitty, they are always so playful and bright. I honestly love that dog.” He couldn’t say he loved Mary yet, but his heart beated faster and louder due to her. And he felt a longing to get to know her more, to hold her hand and be a part of her world. “Well, knowing Austin she’d be interested in a good love story so maybe she’d linger.” He didn’t know if she would read into the words he said, but he’d take it as she would.
“I feel more sorry to the fact that her actions still control me today. I wish I was a better man than I have been.” He regretted his actions, the need to keep people far away from him. “But I guess this is a second chance to be better.” He said with a smile, his chest feeling warm with the idea that things would end up better in the end. He only had to hope.

“Oh umm yeah” he nodded taking the granola from him “Thanks” There was a small part of him that wanted to say he could have gotten it, but he left it at the sentiment of gratitude. Something that was definitely more appropriate. “Sorry I was the only person available to do this with.” The boy was pretty certain there were a number of others Adam would rather be doing this with.
~
Adam knew that Charles was a bit uncomfortable with him, he deserved it after how he’d treated his staff and he felt horrible about it. But he truly was trying to be better. “You are welcome.” He said quietly. Staring at the ceiling for a moment when he found himself looking back to Charles with a frown. “What do you mean, sorry I was the only person available? I’m glad it’s you that is coming with me to the store.”

“A florist named Persephone. Very interesting,” Alice mused, though others may have found their questioning prying rather than proper conversational material. They frowned slightly at the mention of the incident at the festival; they had been hit mildly, but their sister had quick to dispute it until Alice was actually sick. “Do you think that’s a conspiracy too?” Alice asked, leaning back thoughtfully in their chair. “I mean, of course it must be. Drugs don’t just show up in the water supply unless someone put them there. But the question, I wonder, is why? Or what for?” The incident had Alice’s imagination running wild for a while, and the endless questions had surely driven their parents mad by now.
“I suppose, it would be rather silly to misbehave in a cafe. There’s too much coffee around, and who can be unhappy when there are fresh baked tarts?” Alice smiled. “Just, out of curiosity, what would one have to do to get on the dark list, other than be your ex-fiance and not be allowed near you?”
~
“Yeah well, Hayden has a cousin named Aphrodite as well. Quite the character too.” Not his type however, not that it mattered after all he already had his eyes set on Mary, and once he was hooked he tended to be pretty loyal, even if it wasn’t official yet. “I mean it could be?” He wasn’t really sure who was behind it but he wouldn’t be shocked if it was the mystery figure that liked to have the businesses in Andromeda. “Maybe its a new product and they wanted a public review?” He shrugged either way it was a mess and if the police would find who was responsible he’d be glad.
“It can happen if your first stop was the bar.” Adam pointed out. “Drunk people tend to do silly things. Baked goods can’t save that.” He pondered for a moment. “fighting? If you wanna break up do it somewhere else, though yelling I’m okay with it’s the violence part I cannot tolerate. And destroying of property, accidents are fine but if it’s done on purpose - well you are bound to get on the black list.”

Part of her did wish that she knew her family. She did try to track them down a few years ago but ultimately gave up after they didn’t respond to any of her attempts to reach out. she settled on the idea that they didn’t want her then and they didn’t want her now. Mary had made peace with that and moved on with her life, not letting it keep her down.
A bright smile beamed across her face. Maybe she could convince Adam to join in with one of her wild halloween costume ideas? Usually it was just her and Kitty. “Being cute is his main thing but he’s also great at giving you the big puppy dog eyes to guilt trip you into giving him food…he’s also talented at fetch” That dog was like a child to her. She loved her dog more than life itself, they were two peas in a pod. “Do you think they’d be helpful?” she asked, genuinely curious. Mary had never heard of the popcorn flavour before but she trusted Adam and his tastebuds. “Sounds like a plan, let’s go with that” Mary could smell the popcorn while the attendant was tending to their snack order, she was excited to try it. “So what got you so adventurous with popcorn? Is this like baking to you? I know you enjoy doing that”
So far Mary’s background was something Adam was unaware off. Though if he knew he certainly wouldn’t judge her for it, he’d find it a pity but family isn’t always the one you share your blood with. At times family just happened to be the friends you made along the way. If anything Kitty would be considered Mary’s family, maybe that was why he found it important that Kitty liked him as well.
He loved it when she smiled like this. If she would ask him for a shared halloween costume he certainly wouldn’t say no. “I’ve seen those eyes before.” He flipped out his phone and showed Mary a picture. “If you want I can send it to your phone as well?” He simply couldn’t resist sneaking some pictures from Kitty yet, occasionally from Mary as well. Often when she wasn’t looking and started daydreaming. It was a sight he absolutely adored seeing. She looked so serene. “Who knows?” Courting a woman was a bit different back in that time of day. He nodded, feeling pleased that she didn’t mind his suggestion of popcorn.
He didn’t really know how he got to try new things, yet after a bit of thinking the reason was quite obvious. “I guess my ex being as controlling as she was limited me in trying new things, when we broke up I decided to do the things I found interesting to feel less chained.”

Something that was definitely more appropriate. “Sorry I was the only person available to do this with.” The boy was pretty certain there were a number of others Adam would rather be doing this with.
Adam nodded after he was given confirmation that he had taken the correct one. “You are welcome.” He couldn’t help but wonder what was going inside Charles his head in this moment to apologize for helping him out. It didn’t really feel like it came from a good place, and it unmistakenly worried Adam. He wondered how he could convince Charles that he didn’t mind it. “Chip, I don’t really think bringing you along is a bad thing? You are just as much of a help as everyone else.”
haydenbodaway:

“You got it” he nodded and made a note in his phone to add the Castle Café onto the annual christmas card list. “Well the thing to take away from it is that you’ve taken the relevant steps to work on improving yourself and that is more than what most people ever do” Hayden wasn’t one to give advice on self improvements. It would’ve been hypocritical if you asked him. “You got a restraining order in place?”
That earned a smile from Adam. Most often the cards went to his family and the staf’s family so it seemed a little special knowing it could get exchanged with businesses as well. “I guess it’s because I wanted change to happen.” Adam said with a shrug. It felt like a step he needed to take even if he didn’t want it to, yet reality was that he in fact did want to change. A lot of people gave him the strenght to.
“It’s close to getting expired. I guess they didn’t think she would get free so soon so they didn’t think to give one in a long term. It only lasted five years.”
aliceinandromeda:
~
Alice had always had an overactive imagination. Said overactive imagination often lead to trouble, or daydreaming, or at the very least odd looks when they started spouting nonsense. Adam’s explanation sent Alice’s imagination into total overdrive. “Persephone?” Alice repeated. “I wonder if there’s a conspiracy in there. A town wide one.” They tapped a finger on their chin thoughtfully, but no other links were coming to mind. Granted, they were also trying to figure out the maths of their birthday, and couldn’t think on both ideas at once. “So, it’s a leap year meaning that it will be one extra day added, but do I add the one before? Or after? Or… Oh dear. Math was never my strong suit. It just doesn’t make any sense.”
Alice gasped, intrigued by the banned list and forgetting that perhaps that wouldn’t be something worth disclosing. “There’s a dark list? Who else is on it?”
He nodded as they said the name. “Yeah Persephone, I think she is a florist or something. Can be wrong there, I haven’t actually spoken to her myself.” He added. “I think a lot happens in this town, it’s not too long ago with the whole drug mess.” It was horrible, and certainly not work the coffee he drank. “Don’t give me math stuff I really don’t know.” More like he didn’t want to take the effort to think of other things while working.
“So far only my ex-fiancé, but that’s more because she isn’t allowed near me.” He shrugged. “I don’t really get many costumers that don’t behave.” They haven’t fought in his café yet.
Groceries ‘R’ Us : Adam
If someone had once said that he would be shopping for groceries with Adam Legrand, Chip wouldn’t have believed them. Yet, here they were, the shopping cart already with a decent amount of items in it. They were in the process of picking up some bulk items for the cafe, that the latest delivery had failed to either bring or hadn’t brought enough of, as well as Chip grabbing a few things here and there for himself and his mom. “Really?” he groaned, looking to see that the brand of granola he was supposed to pick up for home was no longer on the middle shelf, but rather the top one out of reach.
@xthebeastadamlegrandx
It wasn’t often that Adam relied on other people, he just was used to deal with the messes alone. Often his own. Yet his therapist told him that people weren’t things he should fear, well not completly and certainly not those that had proven to be loyal to him. Even if that basically went against everything his fiancé had taught him.
He watched Chip struggle with the granola and waited for him to ask for his help. When that didn’t come he just picked it himself, quietly and handed it over. “That’s the one you wanted right?”

“That would be a first that I’d be right about something” she smiled. Victor would have told her something like that. He always made note of something like that when it came to her. “I’m sure you’ll do brilliant and you’ll be in a better place for it” Babette said, giving him a pat on the arm. “Chocolate science is the new in thing. Basically we all justify why we should be free to eat it all the time”
“That you are right? That hardly can be a first?” He said in wonder, curious to why she even thought that. “I feel like I’m on the right path. I feel more at peace lately as well.” He smiled as she patted his arm, and he realized it had been a while that he had been smiling this often. It gave him a satisfying feeling. A feeling he was doing something right. “So it is, well I can’t really say I’m willing to take it up on debate.” He barked a laugh. “Chocolate is a hard thing to give up after all.”

People didn’t tend to make a habit of sticking around Mary’s life. She was a forgotten child and a forgotten adult. It never bothered her since she was used to people leaving but having Adam around and spending time with him had her realising that she had been missing out all those years and deserved better than to be left without explanation. Whether it was friendship or more the first time in her life, Mary felt truly wanted.
“Ooh yeah! It would be like getting to play dress up every day, that sounds amazing. The only way Kitty would help is to either eat snacks or go for naps” she laughed. She loved that dog with all her heart and soul “Maybe. Or perhaps one of them will haunt my place and one of them will haunt your place and then they’ll switch so we don’t get a nights peace” she pondered. “I’m open to trying new flavours. I’ve only had the usual flavours of popcorn so I have complete trust in you that you’ll pick a good one”
With Adam his parents were always sort of a part of his life. Sort of in the sense that he was raised more by a nanny then with them. His mother was pretty well known in France, a former model and later on actress. While his father was a more simple man, an artist - a photographer that never remained in one place. He believed you had to travel to know what the world had to offer.
“Yeah that does sound very much fun.” Adam agreed. Wearing a prince outfit in the castle café had him appreciate costumes and whatnot. “I mean I’m sure Kitty can do more things like that like acting cute.” He couldn’t help but sound slightly teasing he adored that dog a bit too much. “Guess they won’t get bored.” Maybe they’d even offer him some advice, he didn’t really feel like it would be a bad thing. “Alright lets take the white chocolate, cheese and buttery toffee.”

For someone that was usually all over the place and out there compared to most, Mary’s attention was always held by Adam. Usually she would get distracted by something or her train of thought would wander off somewhere else but not with him. She was interested in how he would articulate his thoughts and his reactions to his surroundings. She was also hyperaware of this and didn’t want to come across like some intense weirdo and freak him out.
“That we would. Though I do think i’d be a hopeless spy or a spy sidekick. I’m terrible at sneaking around and it takes me all my might not to get overexcited and tell people what I’ve got them for their birthday or Christmas so I don’t think me having Government secrets would be a good idea” she beamed with a laugh following straight after. As much as Mary was a trustworthy person, being a spy was not her career path. Plus she’d miss Kitty too much. “We can’t they’ll get mad and haunt us” she joked. The squeeze she felt on her hand did soothe her nerves and gave her a silent reassurance that she didn’t overstep her mark when she took his hand. “I’m a food type of girl in general but I’m happy to go with popcorn if you are?”
In a way Adam wouldn’t think it was strange, after what happened with Agatha he tended to look at people’s manerism as well. Perhaps that was why he felt so safe when it came to Mary. Her whole body language told him she was safe, she was kind and more than that she truly cared about him. And for a first in what felt a long while, Adam felt truly happy.
“Yet you are a master of disguise so maybe you work in that department, you’d be the one designing the disguise masks and stuff, I could see it. And Kitty would be your lovely helper.” He cackled. “I wonder if they’ll take turns? Like first at my place than at yours.” He nodded. “Popcorn is fine by me though I have to warn I tend to go for the more unique flavors this place has to offer. Last time I came here I tasted the cheese one.”
