not dauntless. i have a lot of unnecessary eaton feelings yo. like a hella lot. for example:
The first time Tobias saw Marcus do anything good with his own will was actually protecting him from the dauntless that were shooting at him ( even if that was some stupid act of whatever was going through Marcus’ mind at the time. ) But in the film you see it clear as day on his face that Tobias is utterly SHOCKED that his father, of all people to stand up and put himself in front of a gun for them, the man who carelessly beat him, bruised him, made him bleed and cower in fear in Abnegation, put himself in front of a dauntless member and his gun and protected him ( as well as Tris and Caleb. ) And Marcus knew very well that he could have been shot, Abnegation leader or not. He got in the way of a criminal escape, he knew the consequences. And Tobias has to have this moment of pause to collect everything he’s seeing in front of him, to make sure he was actually sane in that moment to see what he was seeing play out in front of him, then he has this sudden reminder that he’s being hunted down, that people are trying to kill him/stop him from escaping amity with Tris and Caleb, that he’s now a war criminal to a corrupted society and he has to get away. He can’t think about it right at this moment, but it would come back to bite him in the ass later.
To me, as much as I hate Marcus’ guts with a fiery passion, this is a moment I feel as if I have to stand up and say something about him. He is a horrible human being, and nothing will ever change that, but I think that despite his shitty-ass actions, he was really trying to protect his son. while his actions are ( and will always be ) inexcusable, I feel like Marcus’ intention’s was to make sure that Tobias knew better, especially when it came to his “divergence.”
Marcus never told anybody about his son’s divergence ( even if he wasn’t sure about it, but the signs were there. ) Nobody knew. And I think that there’s a point in time where you just have to step back and really ( and I mean really ) look at Marcus as a whole character. Yes, he’s despicable. Yes what he did to Tobias was undoubtedly the most shitty-ass move made by a coward and a douche-bag, but deep deep deep deep dEEP down inside of Marcus somewhere, part of me would like to believe that his intentions weren’t all corrupted and shitty. He wanted to protect his son ( yes he should have done it WAY differently. Yes he should have never ever laid a hand on Tobias ) but this is what I think. I don’t ( nor will I ever ) excuse Marcus’ character for ever being the abusive asshole he was, but I also refuse to believe that all choices in the past were made to actually cause HARM.
