In N.F. 100, a massive meteor struck Antarctica, triggering the catastrophic event later known as the βSecond Impact.β Sea levels rose across the globe, natural disasters ravaged entire nations, economies collapsed, and wars broke out one after another. By the end of the chaos, half of humanity had perished.
Fifteen years later, just as the world finally began to recover, a new threat appeared.
The βAngels.β
Gigantic unidentified beings descended upon humanity without warning, unleashing devastating attacks wherever they appeared. Are they truly the "Emissaries of God," as their name suggests?
In preparation for the coming battles, humanity developed the βEvangelionβ β a multi-purpose humanoid weapon created solely to fight the Angels. By N.F. 115, three children had been chosen to pilot them.
Humanity placed its hopes for the future in their hands.
Bearing the weight of mankindβs survival on their shoulders, the battle of the three children begins.
βββ
I donβt really have any hopes for the future.
Iβve never thought much about dreams or ambitions either.
Soβ¦ I donβt think it would matter if I died someday. In an accident, maybe. Or somewhere no one would notice.
β¦When I wrote that in my essay, my teacher got angry and told me to take the assignment seriously.
βββ
Dozens of tanks are lined up by the shoreline, facing the sea for any incoming danger. In terms of weather, it was an amazing day. The sky is blue and the wind is blowing nice, but danger looms deep in the ocean.
It doesn't take long until a shriek like tearing metal echoed from below.
βββ
βUNKNOWN OBJECT DETECTED ON THE OCEAN SURFACE!!β
βConfirm visual contact immediately!β
βImage feed on the main monitorβnow!!β
The command room fell silent for a moment.
Chaos in the room died instantly. The massive shape appeared on the screen. All eyes turned toward the main screen.
β...Fifteen years,β one of the directors muttered quietly.
βYeah. No more mistakes.β
A brief pause.
βItβs an Angel.β
βSo the time has finally come...β
βHumanityβs trial begins now.β
βββ
βAT 12:30 PM TODAY, A SPECIAL STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED ACROSS THE CENTRAL EASTSIDE REGION, CENTERED AROUND THE KANTO DISTRICT!β
The announcement echoed throughout the nearly empty train station.
βALL RESIDENTS ARE ADVISED TO EVACUATE TO THEIR DESIGNATED SHELTERS IMMEDIATELY!β
Every line on the service status board glowed red. All transit services had been suspended.
βWE REPEAT. PLEASE EVACUATE TO YOUR DESIGNATED SHELTERS IMMEDIATELY.β
βTchβ¦β
You lowered the phone back onto its dock, clicking your tongue in frustration as you glanced around the deserted station. Payphones are dead, monorails aren't operating, if every service was suspended, what were you supposed to do now?
You turned away from the station exit, slowly walking down the flight of stairs that led you outside. Why would she arrange a meeting at a time like this?
You dropped your duffel bag beside you before sitting down on the edge of the steps with a quiet sigh, looking around aimlessly. βShelterβ¦ There's no way a war is going on right nowβ¦β
Reaching into your skirt pocket, you pulled out the letter your father had sent earlier that week. You stared at it for a long moment. It's a letter containing his request of you returning back to DisCity.
Dadβ¦ What does he even want from me now? After leaving me in my uncle's house, and neglecting me for nearly 10 yearsβ¦.
Behind the letter was a photograph of a woman. You stared at it for a moment. She looked fairly youngβprobably somewhere in her twenties. A lipstick mark had been stamped across the corner beside the handwritten message:
βY/N! I'm going to pick you up okay? Just wait for me!β
β...β Your lips are pressed into a thin line, holding back laughter. βWeird lady.β βWho is she to him anyway?β
Eventually, you pushed yourself back to your feet, stretching your arms slightly before picking up your duffel bag again with a tired sigh.
βWellβ¦ guess Iβm walking two more stations.β
Not even three steps in, a sudden roar thundered overhead. You looked up just in time to see a military aircraft tear across the sky above the station. Its speed was absurdly fast, disappearing behind the city buildings within seconds before several others followed after it.
ββ¦Military?β
The question barely left your mouth before the ground shook violently beneath your feet.
You instinctively grabbed the railing beside the stairs to steady yourself. In the distance, somewhere far beyond the rows of buildings, something enormous slowly emerged into view.
At first, your eyes couldnβt properly make sense of it. The shape looked vaguely human, yet completely unnatural at the same time. Its massive silhouette towered over the surrounding skyline while smoke and dust drifted through the air around it.
ββ¦What the hell is thatβ¦?β
The aircraft began firing almost immediately.
Missiles streaked across the sky before colliding against the giant creature in rapid succession. Explosions erupted one after another, loud enough to make your ears ring even from this far away.
A second later, the shockwave hit. The blast of air slammed into your body hard enough to throw you backward across the pavement.
βAhβ!β
Pain shot through your shoulder as you hit the ground. Nearby windows shattered instantly while the station lights flickered overhead.
Before you could even recover, the sound of screeching tires suddenly cut through the chaos.
A car swerved sharply in front of the station entrance just as another distant explosion shook the street. The driver-side door flew right open.
βSORRY I KEPT YOU WAITING Y/N!β The woman screamed in the middle of chaos. βGET INSIDE!β
βN-Nightingale?β
βCOME ON! GET IN NOW!!β
You bolted to your feet and threw yourself inside before slamming the door shut.
βHold tight!β
Nightingale slammed her foot down to the accelerator. Tires screeched against the asphalt before the car shot forward at terrifying speed.
βSorry I was late. Forgot the time.β Nightingale chuckled despite the chaos.
βNo, that's fine, I did too.β
You look behind through the window as you pull for the seatbelt. Behind it, the massive creature continued to ravage the city.
βThe UN bay tanks have also been wiped clean.β Nightingale went on a rant, your attention turned to her. βNo amount of military missiles would work on that creature.β
βE-Erβ¦ What exactly is that?β You asked her softly.
βDang, you're somehow calm in this situation.β Nightingale replied, unimpressed.
βA-Ah really?β
βThat isβ¦ An angel.β
βAngel?β
βNo time to explain!β
In the distance, smoke continued rising above the buildings while military aircraft roared overhead one after another. The sound alone was enough to make your chest feel tight.
βDonβt look outside too much,β Nightingale suddenly said. βJust keep your head doββ
A blinding flash suddenly lit up the intersection ahead.
The explosion came a second later.
The entire car jolted violently to the side as the shockwave slammed into it. You barely had enough time to grab onto the seat before the vehicle lost balance completely.
βAHβ!β
The world flipped upside down. Metal screeched loudly against concrete as the car rolled across the street before crashing onto its side with enough force to knock the breath out of your lungs.
For a moment, neither of you spoke. Your ears rang painfully while smoke drifted past the cracked windows. Somewhere outside, car alarms continued screaming nonstop.
ββ¦Owβ¦β
Nightingale shoved the damaged car door open before climbing halfway outside to inspect the damage. The moment she saw the cracked windshield and dented side panels, her face twists in a mix of sadness and horror.
βMy carβ¦β she muttered weakly. βI still had thirty-three more payments left on this thingβ¦β Quite pathetically.
You slowly pushed yourself upright from the overturned passenger seat, wincing from the sharp pain in your shoulder.
βThatβs what youβre worried about right now?β She really is a strange ladyβ¦
βWhat else am I supposed to do? The worldβs already ending.β Despite the situation, a small laugh almost escaped you.
Smoke drifted heavily across the ruined street outside while distant sirens continued blaring throughout the city. Several nearby buildings had partially collapsed from the earlier explosion, leaving shattered concrete and broken glass scattered everywhere.
As you glanced around the destruction, the ground beneath the car suddenly trembled again. Your expression stiffened immediately. Far beyond the smoke and dust, the giant creature had turned toward your direction.
ββ¦Nightingale?β
βHm?β
Nightingale dusts herself off, before turning her head.
For a brief moment, neither of you moved.
Then the creature suddenly lunged forward, despite its massive size, its speed was terrifying. Each movement shook the street hard enough to make abandoned vehicles bounce against the pavement.
βNightingaleβ!β
βMOVE!β
Before you could react, Nightingale threw herself directly at you and forced both of you out of the overturned vehicle. A deafening impact exploded behind you almost instantly afterward.
The street cracked apart violently as the creature slammed into the area where the car had been moments earlier. Dust and debris burst outward in every direction, forcing you to shield your face with your arms.
Your ears rang painfully, but then another enormous shape suddenly rushed through the smoke.
A gigantic humanoid machine collided directly against the creatureβs side with enough force to shove it across the street and through the side of a nearby building. Concrete and steel erupted outward from the impact while the sound of twisting metal echoed throughout the district. You stared blankly at the scene ahead, struggling to process what you were seeing.
βThereβsβ¦ more of them?β
Nightingale coughed lightly beside you before pulling herself back onto her feet.
βNo,β she replied while brushing dust from her sleeve. βThat oneβs ours.β
The giant machine slowly rose from the wreckage before turning toward the overturned car nearby. Then its massive hand reached downward, metal groaned loudly as the car was carefully pushed back onto its wheels.
ββ¦A robot..?β
βShit! We're running out of time! Quit staring and get in already!β Nightingale grabbed your wrist immediately before rushing back toward the car.
As the car dashes away, sounds of explosion and rumbles still could be heard. You poke your head out the window to see.
The Angel lunged and knocked the humanoid robot back. Causing the ground shake and a few buildings to crash. The Angel spared no mercy, raging its attack blindly.
βIt's a one-sided battle!β You exclaimed.
Nightingaleβs grip on the wheels tightened even more, her jaw tense. I knew this was too much for Hecate right now.
βββ
βTHE PILOT'S PULSE RATE AND BLOOD PRESSURE IS DECLINING! AΒΉβ° NEURAL SYNCHRONIZATION LEVEL AT 5% LEFT!!β
Chaotic screams of the engineers erupted, filling the room with more panic.
βTHERE IS BLEEDING FROM THE CHEST CONNECTION!!β
βWell, there it goes." Someone sighed. βPull her back using route 192!! Quick!"
The big screen displays the Evangelion running weakly towards the hatch, before sinking down into its knees in pain and exhaustion.
βββ
βY/N! DUCK YOUR HEAD AND GET READY FOR A CRASH!!" Nightingale screamed.
A blinding flash lit up the entire street behind you. For a brief moment, the city seemed to disappear beneath a wall of white light.
As a violent shockwave slammed into the car hard enough to lift it off the ground, your stomach lurched wildly. The world with your vision outside the windows spun aggressively as the vehicle rolled through the air. The ground vanished from beneath you, replaced by flashes of sky and smoke before another violent impact sent everything shaking again.
Buildings, sky, asphalt, and smoke blurred together into a dizzying mess before the car crashed back onto the road with a deafening impact.
Eventually, the noise dies downβ¦ Smoke curling away. You feel disoriented, you can hear the Angelβs cry in the background. Despite that massive explosion, you're left with little to no bruising.
The car is upside down now. You turn your head towards Nightingale immediately.
βNightingale! A-Are you okay?"
She remained completely still for a few seconds.
βuuβ¦ I can't take this anymoreβ¦" Her voice cracks. (silly)
βββ
Sounds of celebratory cheer erupt in the command room. The prideful laughter of the UN commanders filled the room with faux victory.
βSEE THAT? That's how great our NΒ² Missiles are!" One commander blabs. βWith this, we don't need your new little weapon anymore!"
βTHERE IS A FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE! PLEASE WAIT A MOMENT FOR CONFIRMATION OF TARGET DESTRUCTION!β
βWhatβIt can't beβ"
The previously flat topographical display suddenly distorted. A sharp spike rose from the center of the screen, climbing higher and higher with each incoming scan.
βTHERE'S A REACTION IN THE CENTER OF THE EXPLOSION!"
The room descended into panic once more. βWHAT?!"
"VISUALS RECOVERED!β
The monitors buzzed up to life once more. Displaying the now barren land with the Angel, viewed tiny from how far the camera is. It grotesquely covers itself with a layer of skin, before slowly pulling away. It rises to its feet, as if mocking the men at the command room.
βOur Ace cardβ¦β
"WE SACRIFICED A WHOLE CITY FOR THIS!β
βWHAT KIND OF CREATURE IS THAT!"
βWHAT A MONSTER!!"
In the distance, the Angel let out a monstrous roar. Shaking the very earth where its feet is planted.
βAlright, with that, allow me to leave for a moment.β The man rises from his seat.
βHayes! There's a message from the headquarters!"
βFrom now on, all of the first operational command authority is transferred to your hands. Show your skills.β
β...We admit, UNβs weapons are very ineffective. But Hayes! Could you defeat them all?β
βYou don't need to worry." Director Hayes adjusts his glasses. βThat's why the MBCC exists."
βββ
The full metal gate slides open with a loud groan. The rail underneath the car pushes through, moving you inside.
"Minos Bureau of Crisis Control?β
You stare at the classified binder in your hands.
"That's right, this is an organization right under UN." Nightingale answered.
βI'm also from that organization. You could say that I'm an international civil servants"
You let out a small chuckle. βPft, βnoble duty of protecting humanityβ huhβ¦β
βSarcasm?"
βNo, no."
The car eventually stops at a metal pad. Two locks latches into the car, turning it in a mechanical turn, before sending the car off in a fast speed.
βNightingaleβ¦β
"Yeah?" Nightingale responded, re-touching her make up, holding up a small mirror to her face.
"Why did Dad want me here?β Your palms clenched as it rests on your knees. "I thought he forgot about me.β
She glanced toward you before offering a small smile.
"Honestly?" Nightingale shrugged. "I think that's something your dad should answer himself.β
β...We're gonna go to Dadβs place are we?"
Nightingale glances from the rearview mirror as the rail speeds up.
βAre you not comfortable with your dad?"
"No, it's just thatβ¦ I just don't want to.β You leaned back with a soft sigh. "Besidesβ¦"
βIf we even met, what do I even say to him?"
The speed of the rail shoots fast. A blinding light disrupts your vision for a moment. You shake your head to shake off the disorientation, once you get back to your senses, your jaw drops slightly in amazement.
"Woah! Whats this?β You press your face against the window. "A real geofront!β
The Geofront stretched out before you like an entire world hidden beneath the earth. Artificial lights illuminated forests, roads, and buildings scattered across the enormous underground cavity. It was so large that the distant ceiling disappeared into darkness. The cavern was so vast that your eyes struggled to comprehend its true size. You could see entire blocks of buildings stretching across the valley floor.
βYeah, This is the MBCC headquarters. A classified place.β Nightingale sighed.
"The key to world development, a place that becomes a fortress for humanity.β
βββ
"EVA UNIT-01 SUCCESSFULLY RETRIEVED!β
Report screamed. The ICU bedβs wheels screech against the floor as numbers of medics running with it frantically, a severely wounded girl laid upon it.
βPILOT SUFFERS SEVERE INJURY! POSSIBLE RUPTURE OF SLEEN!β
An oxygen mask was stuffed onto the girlβs face as the medics rushes to safety.
Back in the command room, Director Hayesβ right hand man approached him. The name βLANGLEY" gleamed on her metal name tag.
""The UN troops have pulled back, Director Hayes, what's your next plan?β
"...β
Hayes went quiet for a moment.
"Activate Unit-01 again.β
"That would be impossible! There's no one to pilot it!β Langleyβs eyes widened. "Hecate can'tββ
