First published in 1890 by Lippincott’s Magazine, this American edition of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray dates from 1930 with colour illustrations by a woman known only as Majeska, who chose to depict the physical transformation of Dorian Gray’s portrait. Majeska’s Aubrey Beardsley-influenced designs for works of the 19th century fin-de-siècle and Decadent movement were popular in America during this period.

Prayer to St. Sebastian in times of Plague and Epidemic

O Sebastian, gem of martyrs and soldiers of Christ, to whom in arrows of the wing are to have gone to blessed joys, consider us with thy faithful eye in this period of contagion and obtain seasons of healing for us.

Ant. O great man of faith, most holy Sebastian, most blessed soldier, of whose merits, and prayers, the whole nation of Lombardy, was freed from a death bearing plague; intercede for us to Our Lord Jesus Christ; that we, by thy blessed intervention from this epidemic plague, from sudden and unprovided death, and from every adversity of body and soul to liberate us, and deign to defend, and grant us so great a length of life, and a great amendment of our sins, that after this exile by thy holy prayers we may rejoice with Christ.

V. Pray for us O Blessed Martyr Sebastian! R. That we, uninjured, may merit to pass through this epidemic plague and obtain the promise of Christ.

Let us pray: Grant, we beseech thee, All Powerful God, that by the intercession thy Blessed Martyr Sebastian we may be so freed from all adversities in body and we may be cleaned from perverse thoughts in mind.
