Building off of this post about locating Steve Rogers’ historic 1940s neighborhood, I actually found the Sanborn Fire Insurance maps of the block where the Marvel Map of Manhattan placed Steve Rogers’ 1942 apartment!

Sanborn maps are great tools for historians who do Serious Historian Work because they list building material and building type, and now that we know which street Steve Rogers probably lived on, we can narrow it down even further and describe what types of buildings and businesses he lived near.  It isn’t a perfect science, not all Sanborn maps are digitized, and not all of them are available for public use.  The 1943 Market Analysis map I used to find out the median household income in Steve’s neighborhood is different from this 1916 Sanborn. But its close enough for government work, and there is always opportunity for new collections to be digitized and made open access.

The reason a Sanborn map like this is important is that few of these buildings exist anymore.  South of State Street in block 175 is a detention center, most of block 169 is Kings’ County Criminal Court.  

But in 1916, these were warehouses, factories, stables, clubs, meeting houses, and residences.  They were mostly brick, with a few frame constructions.  Further down the street were brick buildings with stone facing.  Most of the streets were asphalt paved, with some brick remaining.  The index even shows water mains, sewer lines, trolley tracks, elevated trains, subway stations!!  Where the manhole covers were in the sewer lines.

Guys.  Guys. This is so freaking cool.
