i kindly ask you to see how all of us are connected in society. and one person’s disadvantage is, on the other side, one person’s advantage unfairly earned. just consider how some people might feel about anti trans statements, how deeply it wounds them. choose love and kindness.
I do appreciate the respectful tone Anon, but I would ask you to consider that it’s possible my investment (and that of other women) in this subject isn’t simply about a disdain for dysphoric and transsexual people, and that there might actually be a variety of complex political, legislative and social issues here that materially affect the lives of many people (especially women and girls) and that the work of balancing rights across groups is complicated and messy and the process of doing so isn’t necessarily comfortable for anyone involved. I understand very well how it “wounds” a dysphoric person who subscribes to the ideas of gender identity to come into contact with opposing views. I’m a dysphoric woman who was trans-identified for over a decade (going back to a time when someone like me who hadn’t medically transitioned wasn’t considered “trans”), I do have some idea of what dysphoria is like, what it’s like to be a trans identifying female within the community itself, and quite a lot of perspective on how we as dysphoric people understand our situation has changed over the last few years in a way that I think is hurting our mental and physical health. We can preach love and kindness all we like, but we still have to critically analyse our beliefs, values and the policies we have to live with and I get the strong impression that you haven’t engaged much with the actual politics of this subject so it’s difficult for women like me who are VERY engaged and politically active (at the boring policy level, not just the online discourse level) to really know how to respond to pleas for me to just “choose kindness” because I can’t give you an abbreviated crash course and I can’t really engage with you on any of the specifics at stake here. We’re talking about something that has implications in every arena of life from the medical system, to the prison system, to the school system and beyond. I would ask you to consider engaging with the women you might view as your opposition to find out what our concerns and motivations actually are because it’s not simple and it’s far from just being a matter of “choosing love and kindness”.Â
People really seem to hate fat women, regardless of their political affiliations it seems. Like seeing self proclaimed radical feminists make fun of fat women or call them names and make assumptions about their lives is really shocking to me. For a group that talks about how evil beauty standards are and how women are unfairly subjected to impossible expectations it makes no sense why they wont extend their empathy to fat women.
A woman doesn't have to be healthy to deserve respect. Whether a woman is 200lbs or 400lbs she is still a human being with feelings. Why do I see so many people treat fat people like they're not human? If your respect for women is conditional you're not a feminist. If you think there is a type of woman who deserves to be treated lesser because of how she looks, you're not a feminist.
So tired of the bullshit excuse "I care about their health". No you don't. The women you target are strangers to you, you don't know anything about them and for you to feel entitled to giving them your diagnosis just shows how much you lack empathy. You don't think they know they're fat? You think this is the first time they have heard it? Fat women know they're unhealthy, they are never allowed to forget it.
A woman doesn't have to be healthy to deserve respect.
As a fat radfem, thank you. I felt like I was the only one who saw this shit. I remember a few months ago how there were just a ton of posts responding to radfems talking about how they were treated as fat women and the responses just being like “wow you really think you’re oppressed?? You can just choose to lose weight fuck off” shit like that.
And the radfems that were talking weren’t saying they were oppressed, they were talking about their experiences but people just automatically jumped on them telling them all the shit we hear from everyone else.
Hell I still don’t post much about weight related issues because I saw so many people just being rude as hell.
(I will say it has gotten better, or maybe I’m just seeing less of it, but it was something that really made me feel out of place here)
What also frustrates me is that these people act like we haven’t tried to lose or aren’t trying to lead healthier lives.
Ever since I’ve moved out and become more “adult”, I have been doing my best to make healthier choices. I cook more often than I eat out, I bake more than I fry, I eat veggies or fruits with almost every meal, and I don’t necessarily hardcore work out at a gym but I do do yoga and go on walks throughout my small town and in the park (so glad I moved). I’ve lost a pretty significant amount of weight, I keep needing new smaller clothes.
But I’m still fat. Most people may say “chubby” now but I’m fat. I still get the looks and comments. So many people insist on saying it’s ~just concern~ but it’s not. I used to be thin until I hit puberty (for context I was an early bloomer) and, while I was always mocked and made fun of and abused while at both school and work, it only got so much worse when I gained weight. No one brought up my body when I was thin, too thin for my age, nobody cared about my health until I gained weight.
You guys don’t care about our health, you care about the fact that we don’t look pretty to you
Lotta radfems still walking around afraid that they’ll turn into us tbh and they project that hard at every opportunity. I’m not an idiot, I know obesity is a health issue. I also know straight up contempt for fat women’s bodies when I see it and the mental gymnastics some rads will perform to rationalize the visceral response they have to seeing fat women being represented in any way would be laughable if it wasn’t so disturbing.Â
men be like the absolute most important aspect of feminism is giving 18 year old girls the freedom to sell porn onlineÂ
