And it was an absolute revelation. But my Insta app is being hinky, so I can’t screen shot… But please note, all credit goes to that Instagram account for raising the red flag to check out this book:
“Ada” by Vladimir Nabokov
The Insta account posted it in reference to it’s parallel storylines to PLL. And after reading this books summary, I feel that it’s absolutely 100% been an influence in the PLL plot lines. Do yourself a favor and check out a detailed description of the book. It is fascinating.
During the season break after 6x20, when “A.D.” Was revealed, I had posted a mini theory suggesting that perhaps A.D. Was chosen by uber A because it is a literary reference. This show constantly makes literary references, and since I am extremely fond of “Ezra is A” theories… I love the lit references. I always associate them to our creepiest English teacher.
When I saw this Nabokov storyline I got so excited! Nabokov wrote “Lolita”, which is huge in this show. Hell it was even just recently brought up by Liam in regards to Ezra and Aria. So I knew there would be some gold in this book, too.
I haven’t read the book, so obviously I can only summarize a summary.
It appears to be, at it’s heart, an incestuous love triangle between a brother, a sister, and their half sister. Though initially, the brother and sister believe that they are cousins. Because their parents were having affairs. Ohhh, and by the way… Their parents were a set of twin sisters.
Doesn’t some of that sound a bit familiar?
There are about a million theories to be made from the summary alone… Including the sister (named Ada) and her interest in butterflies.
So that’s a fun one for the Aria is A theorists, isn’t it???
If that isn’t enough though, I found this absolutely fascinating gem on the Wikipedia article.
In the section where the talk about the origin of the book’s title, they say:
“According to David Eagleman, Nabokov named the title character in part after his favorite butterfly. An avid collector of butterflies, Nabokov was especially fond of one species with yellow wings and a black body. As a synesthete, he associated colors with each letter; A was connected to yellow, and D to black. Thus he saw a reflection of his favorite butterfly (yellow-black-yellow) in the name Ada. This also makes sense because Ada wants to be a lepidopterist in the book.”
Isn’t that AMAZING? putting all that butterfly stuff aside… Nabokov associated the Letters “A” and “D” with the colors yellow, and black.
What do we know that’s significant in the colors Yellow and black?
Black hoodies and yellow shirts/dresses.
Damn that is pretty cool.
So, since I have been looking for a way to tie A.D. To a novel, or an author this entire time… I got excited.
I am thinking that it is possible that, based on the yellow and black idea, A.D. Might be a team. One of our 4 yellow shirts, and one of our thousands of black hoodies? Or maybe it’s referencing one person who has worn both? Which definitely leaves Mona and CeCe/Charlotte. Or Sara as a yellow shirt and black widow.
Or someone we’ve never meant who is connected to that night.
I think I’m onto something else much more concrete about the identity of A.D., but I just have to say that I love this, and I really think it’s an influence in this storyline.
