First off, I want to start out by saying thank you Marina. Thank you for deciding to become an artist when watching Britney Spears for the first time at age 19 when you finally got cable. Thank you for opening your heart out for the world to see what tragedy and beauty was hiding inside. Because of you, you’ve inspired so many minds. Because of you, you’ve changed so many hearts. Because of you, you changed me. You changed my entire perspective on life positively. I now see this world as a place where I belong. I was an outcast before, but finding your music, and what great connection I had with it, made me feel like I belonged. Your music made me confident, it made me cry, it made me reflect on my problems; but the best of all, your music made me find solutions and finally become happy with myself. Your wise words taught me many things. You taught me how to forgive, how to love, that it’s okay to be selfish at times, that it’s okay to take time for yourself, how to be happy, that we don’t need to live up to society’s standards, that not everyone is out to screw us over (maybe yeah, just maybe, they just want to get to know us), how to be a heartbreaker, and finally, how to be ourselves.
Tears fill up my eyes as I reminisce the day I found out about you. It was September 2012, I was on YouTube just watching random videos. I came across a user named, “Amazinglyjon,” who had amazing remixes on his channel. I decided to click on the mashup. “I kissed a homewrecker,” which consisted of the songs, “I kissed a girl,” by Katy Perry and your beautiful song, “Homewrecker.” The background music was yours, and the vocals were Katy’s. It was a nice remix and then it became beautiful. I hear your voice illuminate my soul as I hear your beautiful welsh accent come out singing, “When everything is life and death, you may feel like there’s nothing left. Instead of love and trust and laughter, what you get is happy never after.” I fell in love with your voice. I fell in love with your image. The first time I saw you on my screen was with the mashup, it showed the single cover of Homewrecker and I adored the Electra Heart look. Though, I didn’t know about Electra Heart yet. I remember thinking you were an actress I have seen before on American television. But boy was I wrong. I immediately log on to Spotify and begin to search you put. M-a-r-i-n-a-A-n-d-T-h-e-D-i-a-m-o-n-d-s was typed on my keyboard and your Spotify profile popped up. I look at your top tracks and I see the song Primadonna as the number one track. I click on it and immediately I hear your beautiful welsh accent again. “Primadonna girl, yeah,” I hear, along with harp-sounding guitar strings being strummed. I hear twinkly lights, I don’t know how but that’s how I imagine that twinkly-fairy sound in the beginning of Primadonna. Lights. I don’t know how. “PRIMADONNA GIRL!” You sing as a heavy dubstep background begins to play. I am lifted with excitement and even more so when you sing, “OOH! And I’m sad to the core-core-core. YEAH! Every day is a chore-chore-chore. WOW! When you give, I want more-more-more. I want to be adored.” For some reason I am reminded of Madonna and I haven’t even listened to her yet. And I later find out your major inspirations are Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Fionna Apple, and more. And you rocked the Madonna part. In that moment, I fell in love with your music.
I proceed to listen to the rest of your music. Started out with Electra Heart, and surprisingly, it just wasn’t my thing. So I skipped it and went to your debut album, The Family Jewels. With this album, I saw your power in writing. I related so much with the first track, Are You Satisfied? I fell in love with it and played it on repeat for weeks. I craved more of your artistic talent and gave Electra Heart another chance. And I don’t know how I didn’t like it the first time, it’s incredible. That’s when I became sucked into the diamond fandom. That’s when I became sucked into the Electra Heart era. Your beautiful creation. I won’t even go into it right now because we all know how it went, amazing. And now you have released your third studio album, the glorious Froot.
I love your energy and passion for writing. Never stop doing what you love, even if music isn’t your thing anymore, continue to do something you love. I love you Marina, and so does every diamond. Happy Birthday and thank you.
