Yup. “The amount of possibilities” + “hasn’t had any love interestS” and then talking about slow burns in an abstract sort of way... never once saying a single thing about Kara/William directly, about “him” or “William” or mentioning Nair at all. It always struck me as very strange. The interviewer specifically asked her about Kara and William’s future and she basically waxes poetic about the idea of love interests and slow burns in general, and references “amount of possibilities” which makes absolutely all of ZERO sense given that there was only William if that’s all they’re talking about.
So either she was having a bit of an off day and just talking in the abstract and there’s nothing more to it, or she knows something and was being as vague and distant from it as she could be to not spoil anything nor rile anybody up.
Something feels different lately though, let’s be real. Everything that happened with the backlash and ratings drops, then here comes this big mutual speech between Kara and Lena in the finale, the pair being a Twitter event and trending after the finale and being the primary topic of conversation, then this vague Benoist interview, then the SGCW account liking the “Supercorp Endgame” comment on Instagram, then these promises by the network and parent company to do better towards the audience and now on the show. Now these comments from Berlanti...
As someone said in a comment on another post, if Supercorp doesn’t happen at this point, the show and network will look like one of the worst and most cruel queerbaiters in TV history and all of these promises will have proven entirely performative. It’s now or never, and with all these “we hear you” gestures, if it doesn’t reflect on screen... it means nothing. And IMO, the biggest issue facing LGBTQ audiences on their network is the queerbaiting of Supercorp. Maybe people will disagree, but my reasoning for saying that is this is an issue that’s been dragging on for FOUR YEARS. From the moment they introduced Lena in 2x01 and had Kara save her in a mirror recreation of how Clark saved Lois on Smallville, and dressed Lena in red opposite Supergirl’s blue... the queerbaiting began. And it’s been amplified and built up year after year, Clois parallel after Clois parallel, wardrobe and music choice after wardrobe and music choice, with romantic scene framing and the use of classic romantic tropes galore. And with the official Warner Bros foreign affiliates/accounts for Latin America, Brazil, Mexico, Canada all directly advertising them as a couple, etc. And the media calling it out all the time.
The only show that’d be able to claim a bigger injustice given the length of time and intensity of the offense would be The 100 with how the Lexa situation was (and has been) handled. Aside from that, Supergirl has had the longest-lasting and most widespread offensive element towards the LGBTQ community on the network, despite having existing representation, because while yes they have two lesbians and a trans woman, they’ve also been queerbaiting for FOUR YEARS and refusing to allow their lead hero to be bi or pan even though it’s clearly what’s best and most organic for the character and show, and they’re often sidelining those three supporting characters that make up the existing rep anyway, thus compounding the issues.
So yeah, they can (re)cast a Jewish lesbian as Kate Kane on Batwoman. Yeah they can increase screen time for Dansen and Nia on Supergirl. They can introduce more supporting LGBTQs on The Flash. They can beef up promotion of Black Lightning and Legends of Tomorrow. But Supergirl will still be out there with this huge LGBTQ fandom who has taken punch after punch for FOUR YEARS (including from cast and crew) and taken endless homophobic abuse, stalking and harassment by fellow fans... all just for taking the bait that was offered since 2x01. And given that it’s about to be 6x01, that’s just cruel and absurd.
