Another tough year in the books, full of dramatic highs and lows. But we’ve made it through to the other side, and that’s a thing worth celebrating!

It’s been 21 years since I started making year-end mixtapes. 2+ decades of building strings of musical gems: the songs that made me happiest, that moved me to dance, that made each day a little better than the one before.

Expect everything from electronica to pop to rap to metal to ambient to just plain silly. I mostly focus on newish releases, but I always seem to discover something from years ago that tickles my brain. I hope you find something that speaks to you.

Holy shit, y'all. It's been a full 20 years since I started making these year-end mixtapes. Two whole decades of building strings of musical gems: the songs that made me happiest, that moved me to dance, that made each day a little better than the one before.

I'm not gonna lie; this has been a really difficult year, but there was also so much good music in it. There's a metaphor in there somewhere. Something something creativity in the face of despair. Isn't that how we fight the darkness, ultimately? By creating, sharing, listening, curating, sending?

2022 FLUXBLOG SURVEY || TOMORROW IS ALREADY HERE

 I’ve been making “survey” playlists every year for a long time now, and this is one of the more interesting versions of the idea as it’s basically a document of music culture at a transitional moment as Gen Z artists and aesthetics are gaining traction while Millennial artists and culture remain dominant. I’m curious to see how the next few years play out – will there be a clear tipping point in the next two years similar to how Gen X fully asserted itself in 1993 and 1994, or will the sheer volume of Millennials stifle this progress and largely keep Gen Z culture in the margins? I think you can tell who I’m rooting for here.

As with all the surveys this is a playlist covering music across genres, and I think this is a particularly diverse set of songs. As a result it’s very, very long – slightly shorter than the 2021 iteration, but still over 900 songs. And of course there’s going to be things I left out or forgot for one reason or another, but there’s always a point where I just have to stop adding things. This could easily be 1800 songs, but I don’t think that would actually be useful to anyone.

Please share this with anyone you think would find it useful or interesting! Tell me if you found anything you loved in this – I’m always curious what might pop out to people, or how this got around someone’s blindspots.

Spotify this morning (Monday 2/7/22) decided to make an additional statement that they’ll keep Joe Rogan on their platform because “silencing him” (apparently he literally physically is incapable of finding another platform? Has he checked Gab or wherever his cretin colleagues hang out now?) is not the answer. Apparently 20+ uses of a single racial slur over a decade of broadcasting, plus comparing Black people to apes, is the horse they want to back. 

I did say these guys were nefarious. 

I don’t use music streaming services and never have, but if anyone has a good, clear, comprehensive guide for those who do, which discusses how to get off spotify and what the alternatives are, I invite you to drop a link in comments and I will reblog. (To be clear I’m not looking for comments about this or single platform recommendations but for a pre-existing guide to which I can direct others, since my understanding of streamed music is incomplete.)

I mean, frankly the best way to get off streaming services entirely is to actually buy your fucking music. Buy a CD or MP3 and then download that music to your computer or an iPod or a similar device. Other streaming sites like Pandora don’t (last I checked) let you listen to music on demand. I realize that means you will be spending money, but the alternative is paying money for a service or being bombarded with ads.

Sincere question here: 

Where can one buy CDs, besides the Great Exploitative River?  I have never been a streaming music person, but these days when I look around for a film soundtrack or a Dame Cleo Laine album or the latest Christmas release, that’s the only place I’ve found that has a decent selection.  B&N and Best Buy just don’t have much range. 

Is there a major music retailer online?  Who would you recommend?

eBay and other selling sites for physical media and, well, here’s a listical for digital media. And sometimes we just have to hold our noses and use the least ethical big box store of them all (and I don’t mean wal mart)

Buying digital music can fund artists better and it won't go away when you stop paying the subscription fee.

Side note: If you can find it on Bandcamp, get it there. The artist percentages are considerably higher than other places.

Also, I recommend a separate mp3 player than your phone. Yes, it is an extra device, but it doesn’t tank your battery

Happy Hippy 2020 Mixtape

Jesus, y'all. What a year. I can't even begin to summarize it, let alone in sonic form. Pandemic (and our country's less-than-stellar response to said pandemic), anti-racism, protests, wildfires, epic performances, and the death of my beloved Google Music, which prompted an overhaul of my music library in moving it to Plex.

To commemorate the passing of 2020, I've put together my seventeenth annual collection of the songs that lifted me above the fray, that moved me to dance, that made each day a little more bearable than the one before.
