Slice - Graphic Slice

As we move forward, I created an artificial environment to simulate the real area and applying that 3 different factors to create a new feelings.

Start with the first box, it’s a picture of the original scene which I took at my neighborhood.

The second one, I apply the technique of adjusting scale of elements.

The third one, is the second box but adding the technique depth of field.

And The Last One, is the combination of scale, depth and angle.

As you can see, there are different size of buildings, people, trees, at different depth and many angle combine create panorama.

Therefore, by this methodology can be adapt and apply to any other place in the world.

Slice - Manual of Associations

I started applying the 3 factors ( scale, depth, angle) to the environment around the neighborhood. Since the density of people is not equal, because of the attraction of the place like the Buddha make all the people to go to that place instead of spread to see the whole neighborhood. So I want to use these technique to adjust the environment/space which can call people attention.

Therefore, I am re-arranging the same components in the picture into new one and using force perspective technique playing with scale, depth and angle.  

On the left side are the original picture at my site which there’s not a lot of people taking picture here. On the right side are the views that I produced by using force perspective.

I make the objects larger or smaller. Further or nearer and adjust view port angle.

Slice - Definition Photographies

Nowadays we have a reading of the world through the images that we take. There are so many images in architecture which are often taken always on the same spots. Therefore, I started asking myself why people like those spots. Is it because of lighting? Is it because of the path the place gives you? Why are these the most famous places?

According to my research, I found 3 techniques which help and improve pictures to be more interesting.

- Scale    scale is a great technique to improve your images. You can even have fun with it too. As humans we need scaled to know how large and small the surround world is. It also helps us to enjoy the image and to figure out the size of various elements.

- Depth    depth of field is the amount of things that is actually in focus. It is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a photo, but our camera can only focus sharply at one point.

- Angle     location at which the camera is placed to take shot. This will give a different experience and sometimes emotion. The impression of a photo changes depending on the angle from which a subject is captured, such as from the side, diagonally above, or directly above.

Derive - Psychogeographical Map

I started analyzing the pictures themselves from the real pictures which tourists took through their phones. I looked at the ‘gaze’ – the actual point of view and perspectives of the Buddha compared with human eyes.

Most of the time we are used to see through our phones, therefore the view is always restricted to the small rectangle/frame. Instead our eye sight allow us to have a much wider understanding of the space.

Therefore I create this physical model to represent my site analysis to make us see the view as same as the people at the site. At the same spot, direction and angle.

Moreover, I making contour from pattern of the texture on the wall and locate them in the right spot where it actually is.

Derive - Data analysis

While I see people taking pictures everywhere, it makes me question

1. What in environment make them so interested to take the picture, and why would so.

2. When they taking the picture, what are they involve into their picture frame due to personal interest.

I set up my investigation at the laying Buddha which is one of the most famous monument in Bangkok that located here in Thatien, and the site is created around this golden Buddha. The monument is the central point of the temple and more than thousand people a day visit and take pictures of the site.

First, I started investigating the monument itself - which allow me to understand what are the favorite spots to take pictures of the Buddha.

Second, the people who stands in front of the monument - which allow me to understand their location and direction of the pictures.

The last one, is the textures on the wall - were also the main focal point for tourists, besides the monument.

Derive - Set of Rules

This project I was investigated people’s viewing  perception in space. 

2 months ago, I travel to an urban area, called Thatien. It is one of very famous place people would like to visit. During I explored and experienced this urban area, I always spot people taking pictures everywhere. Therefore, the rules are I will collect the information such as images of people taking pictures in any certain spots I see them and images of surrounding which they took.

The drawings show the contexts, meaning and structure of the place. In the drawings, you can find how this place is made and build to become a prayer room. Without one of those feature may affect the original purpose of the place. 

If you take out the offering/praying materials, the prayer does not complete and serve as a prayer room. So each and every elements presented will effect what it was or what it will become .

After working along the saphan taksin following the derive, I was interested in certain places. The particular place is called the prayer room. It is not the structure makes the room as prayer room. It is the contexts making the room what it is. And I found that the atmosphere or the feeling that the place gives to the visitors.

My Psychogeographical map is a combination of layers that are collected from data analysis. I discovered that based on smell, noise and atmosphere of the surrounding area, the place you are situated or going will give you different feeling and meaning.

In my map, you will see the different collages based on those layers and it will give different feelings also. For me, it is more interested what type of feeling the space/place can give us? 

For example, there is usual place that you go but if there is some strangers occupied or there is some foul smell, you will not likely go to that place. And if the place is new to you, you will not go there first time because of your familiarity of that place. But after you visit few times and get to know the people there, you will feel fine to go to the place.

As I first reached the area, I noticed the few things of Saphan Taksin. I collected few layers of map such as smell, noises, and street atmosphere as data analysis.

The site I chose to walk to walk around was Saphan Taksin. We can say that the area is quite crowded with people as it was near to the ferry station and bts station. But if you start to explore deeper, you can find things that gave you different kinds of feelings. For me, I collected few layers of smell, noise, creepiness of the area which were the first impressions that I perceived from Saphan Taksin. 

Rule I set out the rules as per below. 

The start point is the Saphan Taksin BTS station. 

Firstly , you will follow the first motorbike you see at the station and walk in the same direction for 2 minutes. 

After 2 minutes, you will wait for another bike to follow again. 

If you encounter the junction, you will ask the passer byes to choose 1,2 and 3 to decide on the directions. ( 1= left, 2=straight and 3= right). 

If you encounter the dead end, you will walk back to previous direction and follow according to rules again.

Above view is the one quarter part of the city. l landed on the big long building which is built across the city. The building has several floors which consists of 2 shopping levels, communal space level, car park and garden at the ground floor.There are also several link ways which are connected to different buildings inside the city. l took the link way from top floor to get to my residents.

As I was walking along the passage way , I first arrived at the greenhouse building inside the city. Then I took the spiral walk way down to the floor that has another link way to another building. After I took the second link way , I reached one of the office building. I took the lift to ground floor and exited the building.

Most of the houses here are not higher than 3 floors and very similar in structure. I feel like I was walking inside the maze and afraid of getting lost inside it. But I was told to remember the layout of city from above so that I knew the way around the city and get to my destination without getting lost.  

The rich are mostly occupied at the very top part of the city. Below them are middle class staying and then poor at the bottom. The schools, the shopping area, the market place are located at the center part of the city.

In Eudoxia, the transportation is mainly on foot. Because the cars cannot go inside the streets as the streets are so narrow and there are too many up and down steps and alley.

In this collage, you can feel that you will definitely get lost inside the city. It is a city that looks like it is floating in the middle of the sky as of it reached for the top and ground with winding alleys, steps, dead ends and hovels.

The city is located inside the mountain. It is cold and dry all year round. Summer days are warm but cold at nights. Winters are cold but there isn’t all that much snow.

You can get into the city by taking small jet or on foot. In the video, I took the jet to get to the city.

At first sight, I saw the huge carpet whose patterns are repeated along the whole mountain area.  But when you approach closer, I realized that the huge carpet is in fact the repetition of small alleys, streets and houses that crumble upon one another.

It would be thrilled to walk around maze like city which layout is the reflection of the carpet that contains an information of histories, structures, people, world and elements that make up life of Eudoxia.
