rewatching matt’s two singles matches in roh just cause that’s where I am in the timeline (reloaded tour 25-26 sep 2015). he honoured the existing bookings when nick had to go home for baby reasons. they handled it well wrt setting something up for him (he pisses off adam cole so much they have a match about it. the next day matt taven defends adam's honour and adam continues to get pissed off. it's v cute that the whole set-up is basically 'hi!! I'm here to be annoying just because!'. which ofc works <3). matt isn't awful but also isn't the best in singles. iirc even the few other singles matches he did on the indies nick was still on the card too so at least there to support him/be a nuisance to help with the flow of the match. along with the move set it makes you realise how much of their personas rely on having each other to constantly switch out to and the way the whole act is in balance as one complete unit. in both respects nick is stronger in singles for sure, but this is really lovely too..friends and the audience all pulling together in a strange situation and matt is so loved :') I felt they struck a really nice balance of matt being typically annoying, adam deserving to be annoyed, matt not so successful by himself but persevering. he psyches himself up to keep going in ways he wouldn't normally, like tapping his legs and visible deep breathing. it doesn't feel like they're really pushing that he needs sympathy – it's actually pretty subtle that he's nervous about being alone. after all, nick was missing for a happy reason, not because matt was abandoned. by day 2 the announcer and commentary take the crowd's lead in billing him as the one buck. it's just about the crowd still getting to have a bucks experience and a great time (adam takes one billion superkicks), matt gets to shout out nick's brand new baby at the end, and it's a nice little blip to have in the timeline I think. and then he also had to honour their 2cw booking and team with roddy, which made sense given the mount rushmore 2.0 of the time, but eep
