Ya know, if Shadow is a great singer, I can very much imagine him singing to Maria while she’s recovering in bed because it makes her so happy, and whenever Shadow is watching baby Silver and he’s having a nightmare, he sings to him as well to soothe him back to sleep.
Obviously he won’t sing in front of everyone because it’s his special moment, and he’ll always give Sonic a 0.1/10 in his singing skills, even if Tangle sings like a banshee
Yeah there’s only a small handful of people who would ever hear him sing lol
Go check out my new song!!

As Alfred drove home from his, now boyfriend, Romano's house, he felt the butterflies in his stomach morph into something darker. Something like fear.
His mom was going to tear into him about coming home late. Also, having a boyfriend would make her even more livid.
As he drove into the car port, next to his Mom's and brothers car, his head was telling him to run away. Romano's mom had made Alfred, though not on purpose, jealous. The blonde's mom had never been the most caring. Only during certain nights did she talk about how she wished for him to be a hero. Instead, She would always give people the side glance if she didn't approve of their "style of living." And that was on a good day.
Alfred remembered the first time his mom and had him ran into an openly-gay couple. She started screaming slurs, throwing anything in their general vicinity.
From that day on, he repressed the emotions he had felt for boys from his mother. He always knew he was gay, but he knew he couldn't tell his mother. What would happen to him?
"Be brave, Alfred."
He heard his mom, on a good day, whisper in his mind.
He couldn't! But then again, maybe she's changed. It's been years since she freaked out. Maybe she learned from her mistakes.
So Alfred decided he was going to go inside the house, sit at the kitchen table, and tell his mom and brother, that he had a new lover.
"Mom! I'm home."
Alfred walked into the house, hearing footsteps coming down the stairs. He saw Mattie sitting at the couch.
Matthew mouthed "she's pissed." Alfred replied with "She might be even more after this." Matthew gave a confused look back to Alfred.
"Alfred F. Jones! Where in the world have you been?"
"Ah, sorry Mom. I was with someone. Then when I dropped them off, their mom had asked to make me dinner. Their mom wouldn't let me deny politely so I ate with them."
Alfred's mom had looked a lot like him. Both were blonde and had the same shaped face and eyes. But their eyes, those were different. Not just with the color, but with their emotions. His eyes were full of kindness and compassion, while hers were fierce and hateful. Something Alfred was always scared about.
"Mom, I actually want to talk to you about something."
His Mom had walked in the kitchen, making some tea so she could call herself down. Alfred followed her.
"Hmm?"
"Well, uh, I got a partner."
Alfred could feel two sets of eyes on him, one from his brother that seemed to be pleading to not say anything in fear to cause uproar, and the other pair which Alfred couldn't quite read.
"What's her name?"
"Well, he's actually a he."
All you heard was the sound of a glass breaking, and a slap following right after. Alfred's cheek stung. His mom had never hit him before.
"What the fuck."
Alfred couldn't respond. Matthew had ran from the couch to see what happened when he heard the glass shatter, being able to see the slap.
"You're a fucking ******?!"
"Mom, you need to calm down-"
"No Matthew! I'm not going to have a son has a ***!"
Tears stung at the corners of Alfred's eyes.
'I thought she changed.' Alfred started to blur everything together, not being able to feel the sting on his face anymore, not hearing the loud voices, not hearing his Mom storm upstairs.
"Al, are you okay?"
Alfred took a shakey breath, finally getting out of the dissociative trance.
"Why would you tell her?"
"I- I thought she might've changed."
Matthew pulled on Alfred's arm as he took him into the living room to sit on the couch.
"I don't think it's a good idea for either of us to stay home tonight."
Alfred shook his head. He was still pretty shaken up from the harassment.
"I- I can maybe ask 'Mano if I could stay with him. Would you want to come with me or go somewhere else?"
"Well, I don't really have anyone else."
Matthew was a quiet person who didn't like to talk to many people in fear of what they'd say.
So the boys nodded their heads at each other and packed their things.
Matthew insisted on driving the two in his car, a red jeep, in case Romano's mother had said no. Alfred told him that she probably would say yes, but Matthew was too riddled with anxiety to not take the jeep.
As the two boys drove, the radio was on and playing pop music from 10 years ago. It was weirdly comforting for Alfred. It reminded him of his past, when his Mom didn't scream slurs at his face. He longed to go back then, but considered it a bit more.
"Down this road?" Matthew asked, getting a 'mhm' in response.
Before he knew it, the two were in front of Romano's house.
Alfred stumbled his way up to the door, mind fuzzy due to the hard slap his mother had gave him, and knocked on the door.
"Who the fuck is here at 11 o' clock at night?"
They heard a voice proclaim, footsteps walking up to the door.
"What the fuck-"
Romano stopped in mid sentence when he saw his boyfriend at the front door, one side of his face red in the shape of a handprint, and a guy who looked a lot like Alfred behind him.
"Alfred? What's wrong?"
The blonde tried speaking, only getting sobs out of his mouth. He started breathing erratically when Romano ushered him inside.
"Il tesoro.."
Romano sat Alfred on the couch, nodding at the other man to come in, and sat next to him.
"Mom, she isn't very accepting. She went off on him when he told her that he had a boyfriend."
Matthew interrupted.
"She- She hit him?"
Matthews gaze fell to his brother, back up to the Italian and nodded.
"I told him it wasn't a good idea to stay in the house tonight. She's unpredictable."
Romano's gaze left Alfred's brother (he guessed based on him saying Mom) and back to the quivering boy in his arms.
"Romano, what's going on?"
Romano's mom came into the living room, Feliciano following behind.
"Mom, it's Alfred's mom."
Miss Vargas' eyes sorrowed, as she looked at the slap on Alfred's face.
"She did this?"
Romano nodded, and watched Feli's eyes widen before heading to the kitchen, probably to fix a cup of tea for the American.
Miss Vargas took a few steps towards Alfred, careful to be quiet and show no sudden movements, and kneeled to the floor, grabbing his hand gently.
She looked up at the other blonde, and asked, "Do you two want to stay here for a bit? We have enough room and an extra bedroom."
Matthew shocked expression told it all. She smiled warmly, looking back to the other blonde.
"Alfred, you both can stay for however long you like. I don't mind."
Alfred moved his head from Romano's shoulder to look at Miss Vargas. The brokenness in his eyes was unbearable. She had just met this boy, and he had already been through so much in the span of a few hours.
"Now you four are not going to school tomorrow. You have been through too much and it's the middle of the night. You will be exhausted in the morning. I'll make the boys get your sleeping situation covered, and you can go back to school on Thursday."
Matthew smiled and thanked Miss Vargas. She said it was just her being a good mother, and walked back upstairs to her room, before making sure Romano knew the rule of no funny business, causing the said Italian to blush.
Feliciano told Matthew where he would be sleeping, and maybe Alfred, depending if he would leave Romano's side.
"Hey, Feliciano, is it? Aren't you friends with that one German guy?"
Feli was just about to walk out the room when Matthew asked the question.
"Huh? Which one? There's Luddy, and his older brother Gil."
"Uh, the one who has white hair?"
"Oh that's Gil! What about him?"
Matthew blushed.
"Uh, I was just wondering. He talked to me today and I was really confused."
Feliciano hummed and said his good nights to Matthew before leaving.
In short, Alfred couldn't leave Romano's side, so they decided to sleep out in the living room.
It took a bit for Alfred's panic to go down, but with Romano, it was easier.
Thankfully, the next day would be much better.

As Alfred drove Romano home, they were talking, as they had been the whole afternoon. It was around 5pm by now, and neither of the boys wanted this day to end. They wanted to stay together, walking around town, learning more about the other.
As Alfred drove down the Italian's road to get to his house, he heard Romano sigh. The blonde turned his eyesight towards the pissed off Italian to see him looking at a person in front of a cream-colored house.
"It's the cream one." Alfred nodded. Romano did talk about his 'fratello,' (which he didn't know what that word meant whatsoever), so maybe this was him?
As Alfred got closer to the house, he saw the person light up.
"Fratello! You're home!"
Romano rolled his eyes, pink dusted on his cheeks. The other Italian immediately became angered at Romano's late arrival.
"Where have you been?! You scared both Mamma and I!" He yelled. Romano and Alfred got out of the car, after the blonde turned it off.
"Feli, I was just out with Alfred."
'Feli' (which Alfred assumed was Romano's brother due to their looks being so similar, but he didn't know for sure) looked over at Alfred, plastering a smile on his face.
"Roma! You got a boyfriend?!" Alfred and Romano were red, both being reminded of the intimate moment they had at the vinyl shop.
"Well, no. A-at least not yet." Alfred smiled at Romano, who was looking down at the ground. When he noticed the blonde was staring at him he rolled his eyes, growing more red ever so slightly, before yelling at his brother.
"Well I'm home now, bastardo! You don't have to worry about me."
"Sì, but I still do! You're my big brother, so I have to worry!"
'Oh! Brother! That makes a lot more sense!' Alfred thought.
"So, Alfred was it?" Feli was now standing in front of the American, smiling brightly. He was the complete opposite of 'Mano.
Alfred nodded.
"Do you wanna come inside for some pasta before you leave? I bet Mamma would be fine with it!"
Alfred looked towards Romano before asking, "Is that okay Roma?" The Italian rolled his eyes before answering.
"Sure. Whatever."
Alfred smiled brightly at Romano before grabbing his hand, intertwining their fingers together. Romano tried keeping his mask up, but couldn't hide the subtle smile coming through. But they couldn't even get into the house before Feli yelled,
"Mamma! Romano's back!"
A middle-aged woman walked out of the creams-colored house, her face in a scowl that reminded Alfred of Romano.
"Romano, caro, dov'eri?!"
"Mamma! Va bene, sono tornato e sono al sicuro. Ero solo con il mio... ehm... amico Alfred."
Alfred's attention perked when he heard his name being called, but was only met by Romano's mom's stare. The lady looked over at the blonde, walking up to Alfred. He was scared out of his mind. What if she didn't like him? Would that mean he wouldn't be able to be with Romano?
'Why is that the first thought in your mind? You literally have a scary woman running at you, yet you're scared if your 'boyfriends' mom will accept you.'
'..Touché.'
"Oh, uh, hi Miss. I'm really sorry I didn't get Romano home at the right time! If I knew he didn't tell anyone where he was going I wouldn't had lost track of time!"
Romano's mom stopped in her tracks when Alfred muttered his apologies.
"Are you dating my son?"
"Mamma!"
He heard Romano yell.
"Uh, we'll, not yet. I'd like to though."
Romano was so embarrassed, he wanted to say something (he didn't know what) but couldn't form coherent sentences.
Romano's mom's face lit up like she was a child on Christmas.
"Come in! Come in! I'll give you dinner!"
The older woman grabbed onto Alfred's arm and pulled him along into the house.
"I-uh well ma'am, I don't want to be a burden."
"Oh please! Mio Dio, a burden? No! You're my guest."
Alfred smiled and looked behind him to see Romano cussing in Italian at the ground. He was just expecting to be dropped off at his house, not his Mom finding out about his new boyfriend.
Could he even call it that? Alfred never really specified at what pace they were going at.
'I'll just have to ask the bastardo.'
He thought, following his brother into the house.
When Romano walked into the house, he was met with the aroma of pasta, though he didn't know what kind. See, his fratello loved pasta, as did he, but at a more subtle way.
Romano walked towards the stairs, to go to his room, when he made eye contact with the blonde being babied by Romano's mom.
He sent a sympathetic glance at Alfred before walking up the stairs to place his book bag down.
"We're having Spaghetti Bolognese for dinner tonight! You must join us."
He heard his mother say. Alfred chuckled.
"Sure, I will!"
"You're too perfect, Fredo."
Romano said, walking into his kitchen.
"Oh, using nicknames now, are we?"
Alfred said back, causing the Italian to blush. He didn't even realize that he used a nickname for Alfred until afterwards.
"U-uh. Whatever. Idiota."
Alfred smirked before turning back towards the Italian mother and listen to her talk about her day at work.
The rest of the night consisted of Alfred talking with Romano's mother and brother about himself. It seemed like it was going well, and the Italian was very happy about it.
"So, how did you meet fratello?" Feliciano, Alfred learned his name, asked.
"Well, he was getting picked on by some popular kids and I decided to go interrupt them."
"Awe! That's so sweet!"
Alfred smiled, pink dusting his checks, and continued eating his dinner. He knew his Mom would have his head if she knew where he was.
She was never really the most, accepting person. Basically the complete opposite of Romano's mom. She was mean, cruel, hurtful. Romano's mom, on the other hand, was sweet and kind. He could see where Romano got it from.
Alfred finished his plate, and before long, he had to head back home to his probably angry mother.
"Well, I probably gotta start heading home."
"Well, okay. It was fun to talk to you! Romano, go tell your boyfriend goodbye."
"Mamma!"
"What? You've been pining over his ass for the whole dinner, don't think I saw it!"
Romano rolled his eyes and lead Alfred to the door. They both walked outside, Romano closing the door behind him.
"So... I had a lotta fun today." Alfred smiled, looking at Romano and his bright green eyes.
'I guess he got his green eyes from his dad.'
"M-me too."
"Can I kiss you again?"
Romano looked up at the American, an annoyed look plastered on his face.
"Seriously, idiota?"
"What? What did I say, I'm sorry-"
Alfred's words were cut off with Romano grabbing Al's shirt, pulling him down to kiss him on the lips.
The kiss ended quickly, not wanting his family to see.
"So does this mean we're dating?"
The auburn could hear the blonde's smile creeping on his face.
"Sure. Whatever."
Alfred smiled brightly before kissing Romano again on the cheek, and driving home.
He was on cloud nine, and was so excited for tomorrow so he could see Romano again.
But that's when he remembered. First, he head to head back home.

Alfred walked into the record shop, dragging Romano along as he had been for the whole "date."
"Carino, slow down!" Alfred glanced back at the boy, slowing down despite his excitement to get inside and show his new friend everything the shop had to offer.
"Sorry! I'm just so excited!" Alfred flapped his hand around excitedly (the one in which he wasn't holding Romano's wrist), still walking fast but slowing down enough for Romano's standards.
Romano smiled softly before realizing his mistake and replacing it with a forced scowl.
Alfred greeted the owner of the small shop and walked to the back. Romano looked around, not really being able to inspect anything since they were still going fast.
He could make out some boxes saying things like "new merchandise" or "going into storage" but nothing that stuck out.
"We have to go down these stairs to get to the record shop!" Alfred shouted (in Alfred's case it was more like a loud voice, not necessarily shouting), letting the grip on Romano's wrist soften, instead, putting his hand inside the Italian's.
The Italian had immediately noticed this, but didn't want to say anything to ruin the moment they were in. The American, however, had done this gesture subconsciously, only to stress about it later.
"Here we are!" Alfred started, walking to the right side of the room, placing his hand on a cardboard box reading "Italian classics."
"Ha! I knew they were here!" Alfred turned to see Romano, who was looking at the box with curiosity.
"Here, I'll grab it and bring it to the table." Alfred said, not noticing the hands until right after he said those words.
"Oh, sorry!" He turned red, hiding his face from Romano with the box that was now in his arms.
"It's okay, I don't mind." Romano smirked. He would go so far to say that he was amused at the American.
Alfred took the box and placed it on the table on the other side of the room. The Italian studied the room, noticing the small cracks in the walls, the worn down paint, the musty smell of old books. Romano was surprised a store like this one was still standing, considering how old the place looked.
Alfred, on the other hand, was freaking out.
"How long was I holding his hand for? Come on Alfred! You finally got a person who can tolerate you and you might've just ruined it! But his hand was soft.."
Alfred's anxiety-ridden inner monologue was cut off by Romano placing a hand on the American's shoulder, sitting down at the seat next to him.
"So what kind of artists do we have here?"
Romano scowled, though Alfred could see right through his fake scowl. It was, surprising when he found someone so, weird.
"No not weird!" Alfred retaliated his thoughts with his own thoughts. "Interesting. It's like I can't pull myself away from him. I can't leave him alone, not even if I wanted to."
"We have... Giuseppe Di Stefano, some Jovanotti, and Mina! Oh! There's also Catherine Spaak."
Romano's eyes widened at the variety of the artists in front of him. Stefano was an operatic singer, while Mina was more pop.
"Oh! My mamma used to listen to Mina a lot! I can remember her teaching me and my fratello some of her songs!"
Alfred looked at Romano with a soft smile. He couldn't help the butterflies flying around his chest, the lightheaded feeling the Italian gave the American.
He was head over heels the auburn-haired beauty. And he had no way of getting out soon.
"I think I like you."
Alfred's eyes widened at what he just said.
'What the fuck Alfred?!'
"I'm so sorry! Uh, I don't- I don't know what I just said haha!"
Both Romano and Alfred were red.
"I-"
"No, uh you don't have to say anything I know I just messed up a really cool thing we could've had. As like a friendship, and stuff."
"Alfred, you have no idea what I've been saying in Italian, do you?"
Alfred furrowed his eyebrows, tilting his head to the right ever so slightly.
"What does that have to do with anything? But- uh- no. I haven't."
Alfred tapped his finger repeatedly on the dirty table.
"I literally called you my prince."
"Huh? Wait, when was that?"
Romano chuckled, smile present on his face, but he wasn't aware of it just yet.
"When you opened the door for me."
"So that's what you said!"
"Wait so does that mean, you like me too?"
Romano rolled his eyes.
"Alfred, you're an idiot sometimes. I wouldn't just call anyone my prince."
Alfred looked down, contemplating everything that was just thrown at him.
"Wait... So... If I like you, and you like me, that means we both like each other simultaneously."
Romano nodded, raising his eyebrows. He waited for Alfred to say anything else but he was still stuck in his own head.
"Alfred," Romano grabbed Alfred's face, moving it so he could look at it. "we don't have to go too fast. We can go at your pace."
Alfred smiled softly. It caused butterflies to form in the auburn's stomach, though he would never admit it, for his pride. The blonde took a deep breath.
"I- I think- No, I know. I like you."
"Well, bastardo, you're in luck. I like you too."
Romano looked deep into the blue eyes of the man sitting in front of him. He was sweet, compassionate, strong. Everything his dad was.
Alfred looked deep into the green eyes of the man holding his face. He was irrationally angry, yet kind. He was confident. He was everything he needed.
Like the moon and the tide, the two were drawn together.
"I think... I want to kiss you. Is that... okay?" Alfred whispered, making sure to ask before he addressed his desires.
"Sì."
Immediately the two boys kissed, the first was sweet, like told in stories. Sparks flew from the contact. Their hands flew to the others hair, like they were searching for something that they never felt before.
After a minute or two of kissing, they separated.
Both of them sat in silence, looking at only each other.
"Wow."
Alfred breathed our, making Romano chuckle.
"Come on bastardo. It's getting late, you need to take me home."
Alfred pouted.
"Wait! Can I at least get you a couple vinyls?"
Romano was standing up from the seat and turned back around to face Alfred.
"Really? You don't have to."
"But what if I want to?" Alfred raised an eyebrow, smirking.
Romano blushed. 'Fuck. He's hot.'
"U-uh. Sure. Whatever, idiota."
Alfred smiled innocently, jumping up from his seat.
"Awesome! Grab a few and I'll pay!"
Despite Alfred's want to spoil Romano, he only grabbed one. They walked up the stairs and to the main floor where Alfred paid. Then, they both walked out of the small store, Romano now holding a plastic bag with his vinyl inside.
Romano gave Alfred instructions to his house, not expecting Romano's fratello to be sitting in front of the house, anxiously waiting for his fratello's appearance back home, only to be surprised by Romano coming home with someone else.

Romano smiled at the blonde in front of him. Sure, Alfred was popular, but he saved the Italian from a beating, and he was grateful, though he would never admit that.
"Hi Alfred. How are you today?"
The barista said happily. He was Asian, Romano guessed Japanese, with a no-less-than-stoic face.
"I'm good Kiku! Actually, I'm here with a friend! Kiku, meet Romano!"
Kiku bowed his head and Romano just waved his hand to acknowledge the raven-haired male.
"Well, what can I get you two today?"
Alfred smiled brightly as he told Kiku his complex order. He looked so used to the order that Romano guessed that Alfred came here a lot. Also with knowing the barista on a first name basis.
"And you?"
Kiku turned to face Romano.
"Oh right, uh can I get a vanilla cappuccino?"
Kiku nodded and turned to his set to get started on their drinks.
"Here 'Mano! We can sit here while we wait! Then after maybe I could show you around main-street."
Romano rolled his eyes playfully but sat down nonetheless.
The two talked about their days at school, this time Romano talking about his day rather than Alfred, and he was surprised that the American could be a good listener. His mamma had always talked about her late husband, who was American, and Romano thought that's how all Americans acted. When him, his mamma, his fratello moved across the world for his mamma's new job, he wasn't met with hospitality as he was hoping for. Instead, he was met with mean kids who picked on him and his fratello for being Italian.
But Alfred was a breath of fresh air for Romano. The American reminded him of the stories his mamma would tell him about his father. Kind, bright, warm-hearted. All the traits of the hero his father was.
Romano couldn't help but feel connected with Alfred. Alfred felt the same about Romano.
Romano was someone who could control him, and, God knows, Alfred needs someone like that.
"Alfred-sama. You and Romano-sama's drinks are ready." Alfred smiled and stood up, grabbing both of the drinks and saying thank you to the polite barista.
Romano took his coffee from Alfred's hand, their fingers touching for a second. Romano's face became dusted with pink.
'Am I falling for the American?' He asked himself, taking a sip of the hot coffee.
It was almost as refreshing as Alfred was. Warm, like his smile. Sweet, like his personality. Strong, like him.
Romano thought more about Alfred as he talked about his day. Slowly starting to smile, though very lightly plastered on his face. You could only see the smile if you're physically close to the Italian.
Just like the American was. Alfred was sitting right in front of Romano and saw the smile as he talked about his day. Ranging from the good parts (keeping the meeting out of the conversation since they both experienced it) to the bad parts.
Alfred was happy, and no one could ruin this for him. He always knew that he may had been queer, but he wasn't sure on a label. But Romano was the one that made Alfred realize it.
"Bastardo, stai ascoltando?"
"Oh- huh? What does that mean?"
Alfred questioned.
"Uh- nothing."
Alfred raised an eyebrow but shrugged it off.
"You almost done with your coffee?" Alfred asked excitedly.
"Sì."
"I know what that means! It means yes! Now that I'm thinking about it, I should take Italian! It seems like a really cool language."
Romano laughed, well more like chuckled, and nodded, responding to the blonde's excitement.
"It's a beautiful language. You should learn it. Then you could understand what I've been saying."
Alfred nodded continually before taking the last sip of his drink.
"Oh, we'll I've finished with my coffee, do you want to walk around mainstreet now?"
Romano checked the clock hanging on the wall of the coffee shop, seeing it was now 3:24pm. They got out of school at 2:20, so it's almost been an hour since they've arrived at the coffee shop.
"Sì, but what do you want to show me?"
Alfred smiled and stood up, grabbing his and Romano's stuff ("Like the gentleman you are." Alfred could hear his Mom say in his head.)
"Bastard! I can get my own stuff!"
"But what if I want to hold it?"
Now this, this isn't what Romano was expecting.
He was expecting just some one-sided flirting. As a joke. But he never would have expected Alfred to flirt back.
Romano's face went red, and he looked down at the ground, trying to process the situation.
Alfred laughed and grabbed Romano's hand to walk out of the coffee shop and back to Alfred's car to drop off their stuff.
"Idiota! I could've done that!" The angry Italian yelled, trying to keep up with the long-legged American.
"Yeah I know that 'Mano, but I wanted to!"
That only caused Romano to blush even more. How did Alfred know which buttons to press to make him open up?
Maybe it was because of him acting so much like Romano's father? He didn't know, and would be blushing for the rest of the "date."
"Now come on! I want to show you a shop where they sell vinyl records! I know a few are from Italian artists and I thought that would be fun!"
'He's considerate too.' Romano could't help it. But he was falling hard for the American. And it would only be a short while until the American completely fell for him too.

Although Alfred was popular, he always kept to himself. He never likes to hurt others, but would rather act like the class clown or the hero. Before he could remember, his Mom had always told him to be kind to others, and if they were getting bullied by others to go save them like the hero he was.
So, when Alfred F. Jones, the jock of the normal American Highschool, saw Romano Vargas, the leader of the biker gang 'The Cobras' being harassed by some of the other popular kids, he made a move.
It wasn't a weird sight to behold. The popular kids, consisting of the Seniors and Juniors of the little American Highschool, getting told off by the blonde beauty.
"Hey guys." Alfred said, walking up to James who was the leader of the group.
"Ugh. Again? Seriously dude, we just wanted to knock some sense into this Italian."
Alfred was shocked.
"And what's so wrong about this guy? He was just trying to enjoy his lunch, yet, you guys come running in to harass him."
Alfred gave a look to James and his squad that screamed to back off. It reminded the group of the last time they fought Alfred. Many noses were broken, but Alfred's was not one of them.
James rolled his eyes and put his hands in his pockets, angrily. His so-called friends followed behind him.
"Sorry about that, heh."
Alfred turned around to see the face of the Italian, only to be met with a scowling, uninterested look.
"Bastard! I could've handled that all on my own. But no, you had to jump in and act like the hero!"
Alfred was shocked. Usually he was thanked after incidents like this.
"Oh, sorry."
"You should be!"
Romano rolled his eyes, refusing to make eye contact with the blonde.
"Uh, well, what if I make it up to you?"
Alfred asked, sitting down at the seat next to the auburn.
Romano raised an eyebrow, finally moving his gaze to connect with the Blonde.
'Wow, he's pretty.'
Alfred thought, before shaking the thoughts out of his head.
"And how will you make it up to me?"
You could tell Romano was skeptical, but he asked the question anyways before outright refusing. It could be something useful.
"What if I treat you to some coffee after school? I know a really good place!"
Alfred lit up when he mentioned the place.
Romano looked at Alfred, blinking.
"Like a date?"
"Oh! No! Just as friends! I know some people like coffee and I was just wondering cause I don't really want you mad at me, plus then you'll be safe and won't get hurt after school-"
Alfred's rant was cut off by the raised hand of the amused Italian.
Romano chuckled, "Sure, Idiotia."
Alfred's face brightened up ten-fold. He was so excited that he might be friends with the handsome Italian. The rest of the day consisted of Alfred rambling to his twin brother Mattew about his new friend that he was going to get coffee ("Like a date?" Mattew inquired just to get shut down by Alfred) later after school.
After school, Alfred walked around school, looking for the Italian. Romano was just outside of the school, a lit cigarette in his mouth, as he looked around for the blonde.
Both pairs of eyes met when Alfred walked out of the fourth building. Alfred smiled and started jogging towards the Italian, waving his arms obnoxiously.
Romano was nothing less than embarrassed. Alfred was so loud and he was used to such quiet environments that this new kid who “saved him” was… How could he put it..? Refreshing? Yeah, refreshing. It was like finally going to your bed for a siesta after a long day of work.
“Hey ‘Mano!” Alfred yelled, slowing down his jog while he closed in on the auburn.
“I- why are you calling me nicknames now?” He smirked, taking the almost finished cigarette out of his mouth and letting it fall to the ground before stomping on it.
“Oh, sorry! Uh, I guess I should’ve asked you, heh.” He laughed awkwardly, hand going to the back of his neck.
“No it’s fine. I don’t mind.” Romano winked at Alfred, immediately getting a reaction out of the blonde.
Alfred’s face was a burning red as he tried to change the subject to getting coffee. All Romano could do was smirk at the boy. Romano was Pansexual, and proud of his identity. When he first met his star-spangled-savior, he could tell Alfred was a bit queer. Though he doubted if Alfred knew it himself.
“Here’s my car! Lady Liberty herself!” Alfred slid his hand down his clean, white mustang as he opened the door for his new friend.
“You named your car after the Statue of Liberty?” The Italian questioned as he sat in the leather seat of the car. It was nice, no doubt about it. It looked as if it was thoroughly detailed everyday. But there was one thing that made Romano scowl.
Alfred had white fuzzy dice hanging on the rear view mirror.
“Alfred. What the fuck are those things?”
“What do you mean ‘Mano?” Alfred frowned, looking at his new friends face to see him just frowning at his dice.
“Oh! Those are my fuzzy dice!”
“No shit Sherlock. I mean, why in God’s name did you think having fuzzy dice in your car was a good idea?”
“Well I just like fuzzy dice, okay?”
Romano laughed a bit as Alfred started up the car and answered back, defensively. It was a short drive but fun nonetheless. The boys (mainly just Alfred) talked about their day or what they were going to get as a drink at the café.
“I think I’m going to get an Iced Caramel Macchiato with extra whipped cream! The coffee’s too bland without it.”
“I- wait what?! You’re telling me you think that is the best coffee you can get?”
Romano started,
“Come on! You could do so much better than that! There’s Cappuccino, Americano, Espresso! So many types but you choose to drink the sweetest drink on their menu?”
“Hey! Don’t blame me for my intolerance for bland coffee!”
Romano laughed hard, all while Alfred looked embarrassed. The boys were getting to know each other and both were having a great time.
“Whatever.“
Alfred awkwardly smiled at the Italian while driving through a street full of shops and restaurants. Romano tried to hide his awe at the beauty of the American place but he was unsuccessful.
“We’re here!”
Alfred yelled, putting the car in park as he stepped out of the car, walking to the other side of the car to open the door for Romano.
“Grazie mio Principe.”
“I have no idea what you just said so I’m going to assume it was thank you, so you’re welcome.”
Romano rolled his eyes as he smiled softly.

———————————————————————
As a 5 year old, Mirabel wasn’t ready for this much guilt. She wasn’t ready for any of this to happen, and she wondered what she did wrong for her Abuella to hate her. The longer she pondered and wondered why, the more she felt the sob crawling up her throat.
Soon enough, she couldn’t hold it back anymore. It was late at night so most everyone would be sleeping. So she let it out. She screamed and cried, sitting up from her bed to punch her pillow multiple times until she got tired. The thing stopping her wasn’t her sobs, nor the pillow that was slowly starting to rip at the seams, but was Mirabel coughing up something.
A blue flower was sitting in the palm of Mirabel’s small hand. All she could do was stare shocked at the flower. She didn’t know what this ment, nor what this would mean in the future, but decided to sleep on it. Slightly from pure exhaustion and slightly from confusion.
The next morning, Mirabel felt a cough go up her throat, and low and behold, a blue flower was in the palm of her hand yet again.
“¿Lo que está sucediendo?” Her voice came out, hoarse and quiet. She believed it might’ve been so quiet that Dolores couldn’t even hear her. But she digresses, and gets up anyways, taking the flower with her to ask her mom what’s happening.
Mirabel turned a blind corner in her house when she ran straight into her Abuella.
“Oh! Sorry Abuella!” Abuella looked down at Mirabel, and she read the look as it was being displayed as plain as day.
Abuella hated Mirabel.
Or at least that’s what Mirabel thought when she saw the angry and disappointed face of her grandmother.
“Mirabel. Go back to your room, we have a lot of stuff to do today, and we can’t have you in the way.”
What?
Since when has Abuella acted this way towards Mira. She never did anything. But she didn’t get her gift. I guess that’s why Abuella’s acting like this.
“..S-si Abuella.” Mirabel moved out of the walkway for her grandmother to walk through, and she walked back to the nursery.
The next few years, Mirabel had learned what the flowers meant. She had a rare disease called Hanahaki disease which is fueled by unrequited love. It also has no cure. Although, it took longer for her to find out who didn’t love her back.
The longer she thought about it, the more she wondered. It couldn’t have been her parents. They practically said how much they loved her every day. Maybe it was Tio Felix? No, he loved everyone.
That’s when it hit.
It was her Abuella.
Her Abuella was the one who caused her Hanahaki disease, though probably not on purpose. Probably.
No definitely. Abuella wouldn’t had hated Mirabel if she knew that every day she would cough up blue-sometimes-blood-stained flowers.
Mirabel chuckled, “Maybe this is my gift. Making flowers grow inside my lungs.” She knew it wasn’t funny, and it was just her anger and sadness talking. But in that moment, she couldn’t help but laugh.
She laughed out the pain. So hard to the point when she coughed up even more flowers.
Soon after her realization, her cousin (and basically little brother) moved into the nursery with her. She tried her hardest to keep her Hanahaki a secret from not only the toddler, but from the rest of the family. She didn’t want to burden them even more than she had already done. Plus, Antonio was just a kid. He couldn’t deal with that much weight on his shoulders knowing his basically-older-sister is slowly dying.
During her first few 10 years of having this incurable disease, she noticed it becoming increasingly more difficult to keep down the coughing. Her family had played it off as a small cold.
But it all changed the day when the family found out about Bruno’s vision of Mirabel breaking their Casita. In those moments when the plate of the full vision board slide across the table for all the family to see, Mirabel could barely breathe. She noticed the shortness of breath quickly, never feeling quite this much strangulation.
Mirabel turned around after taking a look at their faces. She saw the disbelief on her mothers face. The anger on Tia Pepa’s face. The disappointment on Abuella’s. And yet, all Mirabel could do was cough. She coughed and coughed, flowers of blue covered in the deep red of her blood. Her family was angry. Truly angry. The cracks in their Casita had started to form, so everyone’s attention was on the house and the gifts of everyone going into disarray.
Everyone ran out of the room, ignoring Mirabel, trying to find out what was happening to their Casita.
When Mirabel knew they were gone, she quickly cleaned up her mess and stumbled to her room. Save for one blood-covered petal.
But she couldn’t hide this forever.
The person to come across the blood-covered petal was Isabela. Isabela had stormed into her room after her messed up plans with her engagement, and she was bound to get hungry eventually. So, walking back to the kitchen, she came across a petal that wasn’t her own.
She gasped, and stared bewildered at the object. What was this?
“MAMÁ!” Isa yelled, causing Julieta walking towards the scene.
“Mi hija, what’s wrong?” Isabela picked up the flower and showed it her to her. The moment Julieta’s eyes widened as she studied the blood-converse petal.
“Isabela, did you cough this up?” Julieta asked in a very serious tone. Isabela shook her head no. “No Mamá. I found it. It’s definitely not one of mine.” Julieta nodded and held her hand out for Isabela to put the petal into her mothers palm.
Julieta walked into the open living area of the house. Everyone was there, save for Mirabel, and she had gotten everyone’s attention.
“Everyone!” Julieta yelled, an intimidating scene from everyone of the family. “I need all of you to be very straightforward with me. Does this flower belong to any of you?”
Everyone studied the flower, yet all came to the same conclusion in the end. No one knew who the flower belonged to or where it came from.
“Julieta, why would you interrupt our very serious conversation when it’s just about a stupid flower?”
“Pepa, por favor! This flower is one of the Hanahaki disease! It’s very important, because whoever has it will die. It’s an incurable disease that’s caused by unrequited love.” Pepa’s face soften as she bowed her head. Felix grabbed her hand.
“Wait…” Luisa started, “If none of us have it, who does?”
Her eyes widened. As did the rest of the families.
Mirabel.
The family ran up the stairs, finding the blue door that led them to the sight of Mirabel. Their Mirabel, hunched on the floor, coughing and silent tears rolling down her face.
“Mi amor!” Julieta ran and slid to her youngest daughter. How long has her baby been suffering? Who caused her to suffer?
“Mamá?” Mirabel’s voice squeaked out. “Mamá, it hurts.”
Julieta had only cried. She tried using comforting gestures but it didn’t stop the pain. Julieta was useless.
“Julieta! Do something!” Pepa yelled, holding her niece in her arms as well. “Pepa, I cant. There’s no remedy.” Julieta cries. Pepá looks at Julieta with disbelief.
What had they done?
After finding out their family member, a person part of the amazing Madrigals had no gift, they shunned her. They told her she couldn’t do anything. She had to stand on the side as the rest of them shone in their amazing way.
They pushed her out and to the side. Some of them not even having a good enough relationship with Mirabel.
Abuella felt guilty. She knew this all was caused by her. She knew she failed to love her granddaughter because of her own selfish thoughts.
“Mirabel. Mirabel I’m so sorry.” Abuella walks through the small (?) crowd of family surrounding her. (Only a few actually noticed how little her room was.)
Abuella got on her knees and held Mirabel’s face. The first she’s done in many, many years.
“I love you Mirabel.”
“I love you too Abuella.”
Now another photo was next to the one of Abuelo Pedro. One of a happy smiling girl.
Hydrangeas where the flowers at the funeral. The flower meaning family. Kind of ironic, isn’t it?
Everyone mourned for the loss of a wonderful, happy-go-lucky, sunshine girl who went too soon.
She was their new miracle and would never forget it.
