Hey! Can you recommend me some books that are contemporary, a little less of the romance (maybe none at all), and focuses more on adventure and character development? Something more like Tsukuru Tazaki, or Nicholas Benedict? Hope you can understand with my broken English, thank you!
Iâm not sure if weâre on the same page with contemporary, given your example of the Mysterious Benedict Society (I assume thatâs what you mean by Nicholas Benedict). Contemporary means that itâs real-life and set in the present. Itâs not fantasy.
But these are some good adventure books:

Full review:
I feel like this book was REALLY close to getting it right. To being a fantastic book that made me weep and clutching it at the edge of my seat (or my elliptical, since this was my gym book). But I never quite FELT it.
See, this book had a good plot. The idea of the characters were good. It didnât necessarily go anywhere I didnât expect it to, but I was nevertheless not rolling my eyes and saying âugh, how stupid does this author think I am, not realizing XYZ will happen?!âÂ
So what makes this an âehâ book for me? Well, I felt like the author was holding my hand (and in a little-kid way, not a romantical way). Rather than trusting the reader to look at the way the characters were acting and see âwow, these two really have a connectionâ or âI can see how his character would be motivated to do thatâ the author made sure to write an explanation. Of course characters will make a remark about a characterâs behavior time and again, but when itâs such a large part of the writing, when so much is commented on, the development of the characters only came partway. I saw some of it, but then it was filled in through telling me, not showing me. Which is understandable in a first draft, but not a final one.
The ending ALMOST got me, Iâll admit. I was reading and thinking âwhat? Did she really just do that?!!â but the END end of it firstly didnât make sense, and secondly took away the gut-punch Iâd first experienced.
I did (overall) like the time travel part of it. Fairly unique in the way it was presented, yet still easily understandable and (overall) made sense to me.
But if youâre looking for a good story and a quick read, you might want to give All Our Yesterdays a look-at.
Hey! I recently discovered the Mortal Instruments and the Infernal Devices and they were amazing. I really want to find some books that are similar to that and wanted to ask you: girl/boy gets pulled into supernatural world and falls in love and has a life and such. Thank you so much! :)
The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong
My name is Chloe Saunders, and if you had met me a few weeks ago, you probably would have described me as an average teenage girl - someone normal. Now my life has changed forever and I'm as far away from normal as it gets. A living science experiment - not only can I see ghosts, but I was genetically altered by a sinister organization called the Edison Group. What does that mean? For starters, I'm a teenage necromancer whose powers are out of control: I raise the dead without even trying. Trust me, that is not a power you want to have. Ever. Now I'm running for my life with three of my supernatural friends - a chraming sorceror, a cynical werewolf, and a disgruntled witch - and we have to find someone who can help us before the Edison Group finds us first. Or die trying.

The Brides of Rollrock Island by Margo Lanagan
Rollrock island is a lonely rock of gulls and waves, blunt fishermen and their homely wives. Life is hard for the families who must wring a poor living from the stormy seas. But Rollrock is also a place of magic - the scary, salty-real sort of magic that changes lives forever. Down on the windswept beach, where the seals lie in herds, the outcast sea witch Misskaella casts her spells - and brings forth girls from the sea - girls with long, pale limbs and faces of haunting innocence and loveliness - the most enchantingly lovely girls the fishermen of Rollrock have ever seen.
But magic always has its price. A fisherman may have and hold a sea bride, and tell himself that he is her master. But from his first look into those wide, questioning, liquid eyes, he will be just as transformed as she is. He will be equally ensnared. And in the end the witch will always have her payment.

How is she supposed to deal with the boy- and shopping-crazy girls at school, her dadâs obsession with her track meets, her mother salivating over big sister Bethanyâs lavish wedding, and her nonexistent love life?

(that is Patrick Ness, blowing my mind)
Full Review:
Sorry for the lack of reviews lately. Iâve been working at a new job and thought answering your asks would be a better use of my time than writing reviews.
But no longer! While a slew of âehâ books left me uninspired to write my thoughts down, I shouldnât be surprised this is the book that made me write a review. After all, the author is Patrick Ness, who I recommend only every time someone asks for a dystopian (or else have to rein myself in from recommending his Chaos Walking series every time). And also his A Monster Calls is a beautiful, lovely read (and sad, and happy, and bittersweet).
Ness is a total breath of fresh air in YA lit. As a hopeful writer myself, weâre told a lot to GET TO THE ACTION! HAVE THINGS HAPPEN PAGE ONE! And while I certainly DO agree with this, I feel we take this to mean gunshots must be fired on page one. But Ness has a marvelous way of bringing you in through mystery and an original, brilliant world, without those gunshots. The first part of this book is a lot of getting to know the main character, Seth, and the world that heâs found himself in, which is the town in England he lived in until he was eight and moved to Washington. Except in this town, he is alone, and itâs an utter wasteland.
While the âexcitingâ action happens in the last two-thirds of the novel, the first third is what makes the rest of it so fulfilling. Ness is such a joy to read because not only does he write exciting, intriguing plots, but his books make you think. They make you think so hard and consider your life and the things that are bigger than your life. Reading a Patrick Ness novel is like going to the country and seeing the stars in all of their brilliance after years in the city.
Another part that I was impressed with in this novel (as always) is how wonderfully Ness characterizes. His characters are all so wonderfully real, in a way that makes you absolutely love them, in spite of (or even at times because of) their flaws.
Yesterday, my friend texted me that Ness is also going to be writing for a new Doctor Who spin-off series, and let me tell you, I AM SO HERE FOR IT. Not only does he make you think and write wonderful characters and plot masterfully, he makes you scared, and sad, and happy, and thoughtful. All of it. ALL OF IT.
And this is an LGBTQ novel, Seth being gay. So for those of you looking for a read where sexuality is an important part of the novel, but not the main plot, this is the book for you.Â
TL;DR READ ALL OF THE PATRICK NESS NOVELS YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON
