unfortunately I think the divide within the og atla creative team regarding zutara during the show's development led to the funniest possible outcome .
cause on one hand, since zuko and katara's relationship never explicitly turns romantic, I think it spared their dynamic from the weird pitfalls that the writing suffered from when it came to the canon romances. and what we do get from the canon zk dynamic is a really compelling and cohesive narrative arc: enemies -> resentful co-captives -> empathizing co-captives -> ...mayyyybeee allies? -> ENEMIES 2.0 -> "Mr. Sorry For Betraying You" & "Ms. No Worries I'll Just Kill You Next Time :)" -> Southern Raiders "I fear only one person has ever understood me and I hate the guy" + "the guy" accomplices -> brief spy interlude -> Friends <3 -> synergetic teammates -> Co-Usurpers -> literally laid his life down for her
...but on the other hand, because the creative team was so divided during this time, it wasn't enough to just let things lie or whatever, so somewhere in between the "friends / synergetic teammates" bit and "co-usurpers" bit of their relationship development, the show takes not one, but two distinct moments to turn to the viewers and say "zutara shippers you are dumb and stupid and delusional btw" cause the creators had a complex over the fact that young girls in 2007 preferred zutara. And then right after that zuko goes and throws himself in front of lightning for katara. lol. lmao, even.

Anyone else having trouble enjoying Atla content outside of the Zutara bubble because everywhere I look there are people acting like Zutara is the evil incarnate.
Atp, I see my fellow Zutara shippers more than I see my family. I don't really mind though; I'm really excited for Zutara week.
Thisss! I’ll be honest I’ve seen some slightly extreme zutara takes that I kinda side eye, but I feel like antis can’t just choose what acceptable behavior or reactions are for zutara shippers because they have constantly harassed them for like 20 years. Of course someone might say something crazy about Kataang if you’re constantly going into their tag to make fun of them for liking Zutara . They don’t know these people so why are they trying to dictate how THEY react to harassment and then try to turn back and call them toxic. It’s like rage baiting someone then getting mad when they punch you in the mouth. Lowkey think my bias is showing because I feel like I’ve never seen shippers ignore canon and be intentionally ignorant over a non-canon ship like how ka’s are 😭😭. For people who brag about having the canon, they sure are in fanon business a lot.
I feel the same; their "critic" of Zutara shippers often feels a lot more mean-spirited in comparison to Zutarians criticizing KA shippers.
Most "toxic" behavior I've seen is just us defending ourselves. Like you said, there are some takes that I think take it too far, and I've definitely seen Zutara shippers ruin the fun for others as well, on top of also harassing/being manipulative towards people that make rather harmless statements, but I don't think it can quite compare to how a majority of the antis act. They pick apart every little thing some Zutara shipper might have said to justify their hatred and then also use it to virtue signal how much superior they are. Hating a FICTIONAL 12-year-old boy that was written by GROWN ASS MEN, or "mischaracterizing" FICTIONAL characters for your fanfic, is not the same and does not justify consistently harassing/threatening people for having fun and sharing their opinions in their own secluded corner.
I think it might be because Zutara has always been the most popular ship in the fandom, and back in the day the KA fandom was smaller than nowadays. So I think that bitterness from the old KAS/Byrke has just translated into the now, but in a way that is way more extreme than before. Probably also because fandom culture as a whole has shifted as well.

The 5 Kage Summit arc highlighted how Naruto desperately suffered amidst a punishing shinobi world that refused to show any leniency to Sasuke. I also find it interesting that Naruto's anguish over Sasuke not being shown "mercy" was conceptually linked to the insufficiency of the "friend" label with regards to their relationship.
"Justice," no matter how skewed the enactment of it may be, is clearly a crucial tenet of the shinobi world. The ability to dispense it is linked with strength and masculinity. Naruto rejecting this form of gender consolidation and the mode through which he did so (Kakashi and Yamato also tried to help Naruto convince the Hokage, but they weren't looked down upon the way Naruto was) affirms the connection between gender performativity and sexuality.
