the thing about obsession re: the cat sandwich, is that the common interpretation I've been seeing is that its an instance of real Nikki's anger manifesting through the entity, but honestly I saw it more as an instance of the entity not understanding human conventions, and having a "cannibalism/consumption as a metaphor for love" moment. Like I genuinely could imagine the entity's thought process as:

Bear loves the cat -> consumption is one of the ultimate acts of love. by eating the cat, its essence lives inside him. -> he will love me for this wonderful gift I've given him :)

it sort of reminds me of Where the Wild Things Are, when the monsters beg the protagonist to stay with them. Please don't go. I'll eat you whole. I love you so.

saw the movie again and as some pointed out, the entity does say that she wants to "eat Bear up" which I had definitely missed my first viewing (I can't wait to watch this movie with subtitles lmao). But this confirms to me that for the Entity: consumption = love and there's 100% a version of this story out there that ends with her eating him bones and all.

obsessed with the Helena and Irving parallel and what it says about the aspects of our identity we think are fundamental (but aren't)...

Like Outie Irving assumes his Innie is just as radically anti-Lumon as he is. He assumes his hatred of Lumon is something ingrained in his personality! That's why he stays up at night drinking coffee and making paintings, because he hopes that when his innie dreams about the testing floor, he'll say "okay bet" and start exploring. That's what Outie Irving would do, after all. But he miscalculated! His hatred of Lumon isn't inherent--- his desire for meaning and art and spirituality is inherent. That's what his hatred for Lumon is built on. But in a world where there's no meaning outside of Lumon propaganda, of COURSE his innie would become ridiculously devoted to the company.

And Helena!! She is the corporation, that's her whole identity. She presumably assumed that Helly would be just as pro-Lumon as she is. But she miscalculated too! Her devotion to the company isn't inherent, her headstrong and entitled nature is what's inherent! And in a world where she's denied any agency whatsoever, that manifests as rebellion.

It's the same dynamic flipped on its head. They both sent their innies in there with opposite intentions--- one to take down the company, one feed the company's expansion--- only to realize that rebellion and devotion aren't inherent characteristics. Their innies have become the exact opposite of their outie selves, while still being exactly the same!! Because even though your personality is inherent, the values you hold are determined circumstantially. OUGH IT'S SO GOOD.

listen I hate Luke but also I love Luke he's my favorite 20-something trainwreck and he was right about everything except the things he was very wrong about and he's very dumb <3 and a lot of his problems are just the consequences of his own actions and the fates hate him and his mortal enemy is a middle schooler and he was soooo obsessed with glory and revenge when really he just needed to be an Abercrombie & Fitch model cause it was like 2005 and everything about him is so tragic and it's all so very funny

"Go to hell" is basic and overused. "I hope your beloved childhood series becomes a never-ending hellscape of cash grab content wherein every new addition ruins the power and significance of the original story. I hope the main character loses what was the perfect ending to his story in favor of repeating the same spiral over and over wherein he's constantly on the edge of losing himself to his anger and fear but no resolution will ever happen." is way scarier. It is definitely possible. And it is happening to me right now.

that feeling when you're trying to be a considerate and compassionate and loving partner so you go and dig up your boyfriend's dead cat (whom he loves btw!) and create a surprise memorial with its decaying body in the kitchen to commemorate her but for some reason it seems to make him upset?? he tells you that its "fucked" (negative?) and to promise him not to do any more "weird things with the cat" (whatever that means.) So even though you weren't doing anything weird in the first place you still promise him you won't because it was never your intention to upset him! you love him. you love him so so so much. (you love him so much you could just eat him up!) And you just want him to see that?? so to rectify this little misstep with the cat, you'll help your partner complete the grandest ritual of love and memorialization that one can... consumption <3
