7 Gluten-free meals under $100!
“Which items on your menu are gluten-free?” is one of the questions that used to elicit blank stares from your serving staff. But not anymore. Proudly gluten-free restaurants and cafes have recently sprouted up in Singapore; you just have to know which ones on their menu to order.
That’s why we went one step ahead of you. We’ve put together a list of meals or desserts you can look forward to having at these seven popular places. And even better, we found restaurants and cafes that are budget-friendly!
Vegetarian Supreme pizza at Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar
You would think that pizzas aren’t at all healthy—until you have these. Think of it: a gourmet crust topped with grilled eggplants, roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, Bocconcini cheese (among others) all made richer with pesto aioli sauce. The rectangular pizza is big enough to sate two diners (or one hungry loner). For starters, try the Pear and Gorgonzola Salad. Make sure you specifically ask for a gluten-free version of your pizza.
Your bill: $25 (rectangular Vegetarian Supreme Pizza); $20 (personal round Vegetarian Supreme Pizza); $12 (Pear and Gorgonzola Salad)

Chicken Bacon Burger at Jonathan’s
To order, you write your choice on the order sheet, plus your diet requirements so you can be sure they give you what you want. Anyway, you can enjoy your chicken thigh-bacon strips burger (downed with an ice tea or their smoothie of the day) completely sure that it’s gluten-free; after all, you’re eating it at a place that is proudly “Singapore’s first purely gluten-free kitchen.”
Your bill: $20 (Chicken Bacon Burger); $4.50 (Ice Tea); $6 (Smoothie of the day)

Chicken, Wild Barramundi, or Veggie Brown Rice Bowl at The Living Cafe
Topped with shredded lettuce, red onion, avocado, and lime wedges, plus Mexican or pesto sauce—can you imagine a more filling main meal? For starters, try the Guacamole Flaxseed Chips or the Pumpkin Soup. Nothing else would be a healthier choice! But remember to let the staff know about your diet restrictions before placing your order.
Your bill: $7.5 (Guacamole Flaxseed Chips); $8.5 (Pumpkin Soup); $17 (Chicken Brown Rice Bowl); $16 (Wild Barramundi Brown Rice Bowl); $14 (Veggie Brown Rice Bowl).
Egg and Ham or Roasted Chicken Crepe at Entre-Nous Creperie
All crepes in this health-buff haven can be made with gluten-free buckwheat flour; you can relax. La Ouessant (or the Egg and Ham crepe) has emmental cheese and mushrooms with a cream sauce; Stephan’s Favourite (or the Roasted Chicken crepe) is served with wholegrain mustard and caramelized onions. For dessert, wrap up your meal with Homemade Panacotta.
Your bill: $21.10 (La Ouessant); $20.20 (Stephan’s Favourite); $9.40 (Homemade Panacotta)

Spanakopita or Moussaka at Original Sin
As the name of the place suggests, the food its kitchen whips up belongs to the so-good-it-must-be-sinful level. The Spanakopita is baked ricotta, spinach, feta, and filo pastry. The Moussaka is also baked, with layers of grilled eggplant, potato, tomato, and lentils with spices. You may start your meal with the Mezze platter (which is good for two): a selection of delightful middle eastern dips served with falafel balls.
Your bill: $30 (Mezze platter); $30 (Spanakopita); $30 (Moussaka)

Grilled Beef Salad with Pineapple Rice with Prawns and Pork Floss at Yingthai Palace
Many restaurant staff might stare at you blankly when you ask from their gluten-free menu. But that’s not an issue at Yingthai Palace. The place to go to for authentic Thai cuisine, all you need to do is to inform the staff about your dietary restrictions and they’ll show you which ones you may order. Try the Yam Nur Yang (Grilled Beef Salad) to start with and then, for your main, order the Khao Ob Supparot (Pineapple Rice with Prawns and Pork Floss)—they’re both gluten-free and delicious!

Ancho Chile Chocolate Cake at Café Iguana
In the mood for some dessert? Head over to Café Iguana and enjoy a slice of their famous flourless cake: the Ancho Chile Chocolate Cake. It’s made entirely of cocoa powder and they serve it dribbled with margarita sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. It’s not too sweet and the firmness of the cocoa melts in your mouth.
