Quick video / tips to harvest sunflower seed!
Purselane
This stuff grows pretty much everywhere and is commonly regarded as a weed, well, it’s not. It’s high in all kinds of anti-oxidants, is a succulent which somehow missed popularity in the recent cacti craze, has pretty little yellow flowers, and his highly nutritious. Its nearly impossible to kill, and easy to spread. I predict this overlooked little guy will hit health store shelves in the next few years, so set yourself up a little patch before everyone gets hip.
Prepare with lemon juice, salt, pepper, olive oil, with other veggies for a fresh salsa. The purselane is slimy, so offset this if you find it undesirable, a bit like okra.
Logs and planks make for easy raised beds.Cinderblocks make for easy vertical gardens, cinderblocks are your friend. The combination of the two makes for easy creative and effective beds. Uniform cinderblock beds also make cold proofing or cold-framing easy, making it possible to grow plants which otherwise wouldn’t in your climate, or extending the season. A shot of the garden last year.
Even after their original ‘glory’ ipomea tricolor are still interesting little specimens, changing color and form.
Datura / Brugmansia
Trivia:
Species of Datura (devil’s trumpet, jimsonweed) contain scopolamine and atropine, medically valuable chemicals. Atropine is a cure for nerve gas poisoning and scopolamine an anti-nausea agent. The cocktail of chemicals present in these gorgeous flowers is not to be meteled (datura metel, plant joke, sorry.) with. Native Americans employed the plant’s strong psychedelic, dissociative, and above all powerful in manhood rituals, where a boy would ‘forget ever being a boy, and become a man.’ I’m not sure where I sourced that last bit, and if I’m off please let me know. Datura is in the nightshade family, a family full of poisonous plants, and potatoes, tomtatoes, ground cherries, tomatillos and eggplants. The Native Americans were hip to which ones to eat and which ones to stay away from, Italy had no tomatoes before trips to the Americas. Anyhow…
DO NOT EAT THIS STUFF.
THIS IS NOT A ‘FUN DRUG’
SOME OF IT’S AFFECTS CAN BE PERMANENT, MENTALLY
YOU ALSO MIGHT DIE, AND THAT’S PERMANENT TOO.
TAKE CARE WHILE TRANSPLANTING OR HANDLING CUT PARTS, ESPECIALLY ROOTS SOMETIMES PLANTS CAN BE EXTREMELY HIGH IN THESE CHEMICALS.

DO ~ PLANT DATURA IF YOU WOULD LIKE A FRAGRANT NIGHT BLOOMING FLOWER
DATURA DOES NOT LIKE COMPETITION, MAKING IT COMMON AROUND CONSTRUCTION SIGHTS, IT TOLERATES POOR SOIL WELL AND CAN RANGE IN SIZE FROM A TINY WEED TO A MASSIVE SHRUB.
Brugmansia can be grown as a flowering perennial in zone 7b if kept in a good spot, i.e. next to a structure, and heavily covered during the winter. I have had a specimen outdoors for several years now, surviving winters where 0 was reached.
Hens n Chicks
Great for colder climates, sturdy little fellows with neat flowers if you can coerce them out, simply break apart a cluster and plant for exponential (but longer wait) population!

“daily harvest”
Planting in waves is a good way to make sure you have enough food every day, rather than too much on some, and none on others.

Bishops Hat Cacti
Psychoactive and used by Natives in ritual when other varieties are difficult to come by. DO NOT OVERWATER, ONLY WHEN DRY, BONE DRY.
Needs lots of light, water lots of little.
I over watered my first specimen and it literally exploded.

Sea Urchin Cacti
Beautiful little fellow
NEVER BUY THESE FROM HOME DEPOT THEY ARE ALWAYS ROTTEN ON THE INSIDE DUE TO OVERWATERING AND NOT ENOUGH SUNLIGHT, I FELL FOR IT TWICE, SO SHAME ON ME!!
Anyhow, beautiful specimen, on the outside....
Photo by Christina Mudarri of the compound.
succulent propagation!!
san pedro can be propagated exponentially via cuttings, great cacti for grafting.
Datura Inoxia
Self seeding perennial in zone 7. Plant is poisonous for most intents and purposes, flowers are fragrant and massive, nightblooming.
Hops
Fast growing perennial good for relaxing tea, and beer making. Need i say more?
