ON TRAUMA, SHIPPING, AND SELECTIVE READING

Something I find extremely sad is that, thanks to shipwars, there will always be a part of the fandom that insists on calling this version of Aqua “fake.”

Not because the story implied that, but because toxic fans simply refused to accept him being genuine. Only because it was Akane with whom he spent those peaceful days.

His laughter, his calm, and his attempts at living were real in the narrative… but somehow not “real enough” for them. Unless it wasn't with Kana, Aqua was just “playing a role.”

It’s so unfortunate that, in a story about trauma, peace became something suspicious just because it didn't happen with the girl they wanted.

A friend of mine sent this to me cause we were discussing Oshi No Ko

How much of this is true or is it true that Akasaka likes Aquakana or did he really says that Aqua's feelings for Kana are romantic?

My response 👇

Oh yeah, I remember that article. Wow, it really takes me back, hahaha. Don't worry, long story short: the Aquakana part isn't true. As in, Mengo never said that Akasaka wanted Aqua's romantic feelings to be directed toward Kana. At all.

So why does that article mention that part? Once again, all our problems stem from a mistranslation.

After the event in Barcelona, where the interview took place in December 2024, several fans whose first language is Spanish began posting summaries AND THEIR OWN OPINIONS about what Akasaka and Mengo said.

And those posts on X became the main sources for the articles that would later be published in other languages.

This person in particular used Google so that his message could also be read in English. And as we can see, it didn't turn out well.

What Aleks (the fan, who is also a HUGE Aquakana shipper, btw) was saying, in Spanish, was that he was surprised that Mengo admitted she wanted to explore Aqua and Ruby's relationship from a romantic angle. And that her statement left him very confused (“me siento más perdido” is a way of saying that something left you bewildered, confused, disoriented) BECAUSE FOR HIM the story was clearly leaning towards there being a romance between Aqua and Kana. That was his opinion, as an Aquakana shipper. Shocking, I know.

However, the translation made it seem as if Mengo was the one who said that, not the fan, as a fact.

I'm not at all surprised that the people who wrote the article (which I know comes from an anime news website written mostly in English) didn't spot the mistranslation, or tried to make the best of it, and thought that the Aquakana ship had just been confirmed.

And of course, Toxic Kana fans didn't miss the opportunity and started sending that article to everyone. Even when MORE AND MORE PEOPLE KEPT TELLING THEM THAT PART WAS INACCURATE. SINCE 2025.

There are LOTS of other articles covering Akasaka and Mengo's interview in Barcelona, and none of them mention the “Akasaka confirms he wanted the romance to focus on Aqua and Kana” part. Because that part never existed.

Yeah … toxic fans aren't as subtle as they think they are. Like, I swear that everyone, EVERYONE, even non-shippers, rage baiters, and Team AquaxTherapy can hear their thoughts be like:

“How can I make Aqua and Akane's relationship sound bad to avenge my Aqukana ship? I know!!! I'll do my best Ayanokouji impression and call her a tool!!”

Safety, understanding, and two people choosing each other are literally the foundations of most fictional couples, yet toxic Aqukana shippers describe them like suspicious chemicals, only to try to rationalize why Aqua is with Akane.

By that logic, Loid and Yor in Spy x Family are just “tools” for each other’s peace, Kaguya and Shirogane in Love is war are convenient stress cushions, and Kyo was just using Tohru for emotional heating in Fruits Basket.

Sounds absurd because it is.

There’s something deeply revealing about the different standards some fans apply to Kana and Akane.

When Kana has negative thoughts and compares herself to Akane, her fans rush to wrap her in emotional bubble wrap: “poor Kana, that’s just her low self-esteem,” “those thoughts aren’t reality, it’s her inferiority complex,” “she’s only human.”

And they’re right. Those moments are read as vulnerability and self-doubt, not truth, not direct confirmation or sworn testimony under oath. Kana is allowed to be a three-dimensional person.

But the second Akane has the exact same kind of thoughts, the rules change. Her insecurities suddenly stop being human feelings and become universal truth: “even Akane admits Aqua is in love with Kana” (not even the word Akane used btw) “Akane is like a machine that analyzes people, so she pretty much just confirmed that Aqua loves Kana” (again, the word love was never used).

What is interpreted as pain in Kana becomes evidence in Akane.

The double standard is so loud we can hear it through the screen.

Toxic fans POV

Kana’s insecurities = relatable human feelings. Akane’s insecurities = undeniable truth.

I swear Akane haters glaze Akane more than her own fans do, and their reactions to what she said in Episode 2 of S3 are proof.

“Akane is just desperate to maintain the status of being Aqua's girlfriend to have a claim over him. She even recognizes that Aqua is always thinking about Kana and wants to be the replacement once those feelings die down; that's why she stays in the relationship despite knowing it's a farce. It's honestly so sad, almost pathetic.”

I'd love to say that these kinds of "takes" come from expert rage baiters, but I actually saw them in the comments section of a reaction to the latest episode of Oshi no Ko Season 3. Although the couple behind that YouTube channel have hated Akane since Season 1, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that their followers comment things like that.

I'm just amazed at their ability to simultaneously create their own version of Akane's character, hate her, and still want to take her words as indisputable facts.

First, the “Akane is just desperate to maintain the status of being Aqua's girlfriend” take has already been debunked. Many times.

That's it, unless we conveniently forget that the story has already shown us Akane about to LEAVE AQUA by her own accord.

Because Akane truly believed that he would be better off without her. Something that Aqua immediately proved WRONG in that very scene.

Second, the “Aqua is always thinking about Kana” dialogue doesn't even exist in the original language.

THIS PART DOES

Akane says that Aqua ignoring Kana is excessive and that it can be seen as “overly conscious.”

That is it. “Aqua having Kana always in his mind” was never a thing. It's just the English subtitles having fun AGAIN.

And finally, “Akane stays in the relationship despite knowing it's a farce.”

This part is honestly my favorite. The reason is very simple: the text explicitly contradicts what Akane haters say.

Akane's dialogue includes 納得出来る (nattoku dekiru). This is not the language of resignation or self-deception. It’s the language of understanding.

Akane senses Aqua's conflicting feelings toward Kana (feelings that Akane doesn't know are actually guilt and responsibility for being the one who asked Kana to become an idol), but she can also sense Aqua's intentions toward herself.

Akane states that she can remain in a relationship with Aqua specifically because he isn't lying about his intentions to be with her. Hence, why the next part is this: “Aqua, who’s a liar, is doing his best so that he won’t lie to me.”

And this hits even harder when we remember that Aqua, indeed, wasn't lying. For him, it wasn't a farce. His days with Akane were his happy days. A statement made BY HIMSELF.

We can always tell when someone’s goal isn’t "analyzing" an episode, but finding new ways to hate Akane without saying it out loud.

I suppose it was too much to ask that toxic fans wait at least a day before proving once again that they really don't care about the words the author uses, within the story itself, to explain Aqua's feelings for Kana.

If hikareru were a love confession, then Aqua, Ruby, and half of Ai’s fanbase (little girls and grown ass men) were canonically in love with her too.

Half of the fandom went into a romantic frenzy over an English mistranslation in Episode 1 of S3 and were this close to printing “AQUA LOVES KANA CONFIRMED” banners based on it.

I can only guess what they will do with tomorrow's new episode. Meanwhile, those who put the brakes on the romantic delusion and took a moment of their time to check a dictionary will be like this:

Having sympathy for Kana and hope she realizes that she doesn't need Aqua's love or attention to feel validated ❌

Having sympathy for Aqua's trauma, understand that even though he does care for Kana, his fear is something mostly rooted in guilt, responsibility, and his obsession with not letting the past repeat itself ❌

Turning Kana into a victim, saying Akane stole, yeah stole, Aqua from her, romanticizing Aqua's trauma, getting angry at him for trying to have a life, and aggressively missing the point of the entire scene with Mem ✅

Toxic shippers turned a trauma alarm into wedding bells

I keep seeing the same argument recycled by Kana stans when other people DARE TO DISAGREE with their idea that this scene hints at romance toward Kana.

“Then why does Aqua say boyfriend? Why does he jump to that conclusion immediately? He could’ve said fans might misinterpret it if Kana is seen with a friend, but he said boyfriend. That proves he sees himself as Kana’s boyfriend and wants to be with her, but his fear stops him.”

And every time I read that I realize we’re not even discussing the same scene, because half of this argument only exists in the English subtitle universe.

Aqua. Never. Says. Boyfriend.

The word in Japanese is 男 (otoko). Not kareshi. Not “lover.” Not “romantic partner.” Just a man.

The entire interpretation changes the second we respect that line. Aqua isn’t thinking, “What if I’m Kana’s boyfriend and her fans see us?” He’s thinking, “What if she’s seen with a man?” Any man, even a random stranger. Because in idol culture that is already enough. No romance required. No feelings required. Just proximity and a camera.

Aqua knows this. He knows truth doesn’t matter once the crowd invents a story.

And he can't stand the idea that in that scenario, he could be the “man” who ends up putting Kana at risk. Because he already feels responsible for Ai's death. For not being able to anticipate her stalker's actions and prevent them, even AS A KID. And he just doesn't want that to happen again.

He doesn't want to have to bear the burden of another death for which he will feel responsible. This time, just for being a man and being around a female idol.

But Kana stans rewrite it as:

“He said boyfriend because deep down he wants to be her boyfriend.”

No. The English subtitles said boyfriend. Aqua said otoko.

Team Kana is turning a critique of parasocial paranoia into a romcom trope.
