I know I've thought about and talked about the concept of Yugi and Yami being literally two halves of the same soul, torn apart when his spirit was sealed away, but I. I don't think I've ever truly fully properly comprehended how that means "Atem" literally is both of them. like, everyone knows the idea of Yami getting his memories back, but if they're the same soul, they're both Atem. that's both of their memories. they would in theory each get the memories of being one singular person. that's NEAT AS HELL.

what a beautiful beautiful flipping of canon, too, because we're used to Yugi saying Yami can share his name and identity, they can both be Yugi even if he was Yugi first. but then they realize they are both Atem, sharing a different identity. you could look at it as (1) still associating Atem more closely with Yami so it's sorta like "his turn" to share the name and identity with Yugi, a true reversal of their dynamic, OR (2) this entirely new thing where neither of them knows what it means to be Atem and they have to navigate what to do with that together.

I don't think I'm articulating the second one very well, there are… complicated thoughts scrambling in my brain. wow.

not even just the name!! it just hit me like, it's THE WHOLE PERSON. they used to be ONE GUY. and now they're two. but the PERSON ATEM is THEM. it's their memory. their history. they suddenly have memories of thinking "me" and "I" and it was just one then but now it's two but also not?? and it's like. sure, if they're at this point used to thinking of each other as "other me" and sharing the identity and being two in one, it's… very similar. but it's also different in such a specific way I can't quite articulate… like. they were a GUY

split souls… separated and then somehow forcibly reconnected yet still SEPARATE what a HEADACHE that must be… one is two is one is two is ?????????????

i kinda like the idea that they were supposed to be one soul, but due to some divine fuckup they wound up split in two.

hey what if there was some chunk of your soul missing and you didn't know what's wrong with you it just made you act weird and a little insane. what then huh

millennium world atem's perpetual confusion and stress (and awkward-at-best rapport with his court) could be attributed to the shadow game, but what if it was also just accurate? what if he had lived his entire short life feeling like a sham of a pharaoh—a god amongst men who lacks his god's soul. secretly inferior to his ancestors, unfit to rule. doomed to fail from the very start. yeah i would look for any excuse to fold my soul up into a pretty golden box and smash it to pieces with hammers too.

and then there's yugi, whose past we never really get to know. all we know is he's been obsessed with this puzzle since he was EIGHT!!! years old, and by the beginning of the story he's already a social outcast and on trajectory towards hikikomori lifestyle. then BOOM, puzzle is done and suddenly his feeble wishes start coming true, or he suddenly has the willpower to make those wishes come true by force if he has to.

i'm not thinking smartly about this honestly, it's mostly vibes based but to absolutely nobody's surprise i LOVE the idea of both of them being literally incomplete without the other, like a reaction between two wildly different chemicals creating something entirely unlike its parts.

also it passively feeds my "DSOD yugi is literally dead inside to some degree" headcanon :)
