Acting out - dealing with emotional conflict or internal/external stressors by actions rather than reflections or feelings
Sublimation - channeling potentially maladaptive feelings or impulses into socially acceptable bx
Displacement - transferring a feeling about or a response to one object onto another — usually less threatening — substitute object.
Passive aggression - indirectly and unassertively expressing aggression to others. There is a facade of overt compliance masking covert resistance, resentment, or hostility. May occur when independent action or performance is required and it is accompanies with a lack of gratification of dependent wishes. Can happen when individual is in a subordinate position and has no way to express assertiveness more overtly.
Intellectualization - excessive use of abstract thinking or the making of generalizations to control or minimize disturbing feelings
Idealization - attributing exaggerated positive qualities to others
Denial - refusing to acknowledge some painful aspect of external reality or subjective experience that would be apparent to others
Rationalization - concealing the true motivations for his/her own thoughts, actions or feelings thru the elaboration of reassuring or self-serving, but incorrect, explanations
Devaluation - attributing exaggerated negative qualities to self or others
Suppression - intentionally avoiding thinking about distrubing problems, wishes, feelings, or experiences - forcing yourself to think about other things
Repression - unconsciously expelling disturbing wishhes, thoughts, or experiences from conscious awareness.
Reaction formulation - substituting bx, thoughts, feelings that are diametrically opposed to his/her own “unacceptable” thoughts or feelings
Projection - falsely attributing to another his/her own unacceptable feelings, impulses, thoughts “I hate her, so you do too.”
Projective identification - falsely attributing to another his/her own unacceptable feelings, impulses, thoughts — person is AWARE he/she is doing so and does not discredit what is projected and misattributes them as JUSTIFIABLE reactions to the other person
Introjection - a subject takes into itself the behaviors, attributes or other external objects, especially of other people
