monomoko revives ogura and then ogura proceeds to use her goddess powers to revive everyone else.

yokoi and ouno have their little moment together, the trio gets back and makes up (kumada becomes nice again), akitei happens, and ogura gets everyone out because she used her powers again and then they all lived and escaped!!

maekawa and shishikura lives together, hirosoda becomes real (+ denden hangs out with them), mattmiya is canon (they live together in a cute apartment but also likes to send each other emails), ogura and akiba also become roommates (along side mattmiya), ikeda finds a better living situation and lives with tei (#roomates again), the yaitabashi and nishiguchi ends up living together as planned however kumada joins in so theyre all together!

Scott and Martyn match each other so completely in how clever, observant, and charismatic they both are, like, their values and intentions often differ, but their minds are so on level and that attracts them to each other I think. Rewatching Third Life and there are just so many moments where they just seem to automatically link on similar wavelengths.

today i'm overthinking what it means to invoke the concept of the family in relation to a team. to take a group dynamic where everyone is ostensibly here by choice, and frame it as something that exists under threat of obligation. to be part of a family is to be, on some level, involuntarily involved with this group of people. as a family, you have to function together, you have to set the bar higher for what you're willing to put up with from another person. estrangement from family has a much heavier weight to it.

the closest we get to a true family dynamic is the soulmate pairs of double life. it's very very telling that scott and cleo are the ones to take a stand and insist on estrangement, considering scott's general m.o. of intentionally cultivating obligation, and the artificially constructed family that cleo ends up leading the very next season. because certain people in a family benefit greatly from this obligation, and have influence over others. power and hierarchy are inherent to the family structure, and the members at the top of that hierarchy are the ones with the most choice in the matter—the ones who organized the family in the first place. the soulmate pairs start everyone out on a level playing field, and while that power can be leveraged against your partner, the obligation is the same for everyone. no one gets the luxury of choice. no one is given the position of power by default.

if we look at the obligation of family under a kinder light, we can see that a family, at its best, is a guaranteed support system, a safe place to fall back on. bdubs' limlife construction of the family is undoubtedly inspired by the ideals of support and safety, the way cleo looked out for him and scar from the very beginning. he places himself in the position of less power because he feels safe with cleo as the head of household, trusting them not to abuse their position. (a little sidenote: etho reluctantly playing the role of the deadbeat dad is an interesting inversion of what is traditionally the most powerful role in the family.)

when grian and gem invoke the family in past life, they place themselves as parents, equal partners and co-leaders, with pearl as their unstable dependent—their "moody teenage daughter." the implied nuclear family model is a fascinating parallel to how the team came about in the first place—grian had the idea, sought out gem and brought her on board, and the two of them facilitated the acquisition of pearl together. gem came into the game with pre-existing sway over pearl, and grian developed his own over the course of the season.

pearl's position as the daughter is a way for grian and gem to assert and enforce the team hierarchy. pearl's input is reduced to that of a teenager who rebels for rebellion's sake. their experience in the world is limited, and parental control is necessary to keep them from getting into trouble. none but the most defiant of teenagers are immune to the demands of their parents, and the threat of authority, of familial obligation, is a powerful force to coerce them into obedience.

the construct of the family, its inherently coercive and obligatory nature, and the positions people assign themselves or each other have a lot of underlying significance. it's weird and messy and uncomfortable at times, but hey, that's what families are for!

going thru all my YT clips and realizing that. etho is stuck in a time loop in real life with his shitty headsets. the first clip i have of him complaining about goo in his hair is 2012 and on at least three different occasions he brings up only having two pairs of the same headsets. he only got the second one prior to 2013. he literally does the "two headsets, love the logitech, hate being covered in goop, gonna try the AT" spiel multiple times and then he stops using it because he hates the sound of the non-logitech ones. he's really sick.

2012 - first leaking glue incident; buys a second identical pair. in july he notes the game sounds not going thru the mic properly.

2013 - notes after a year or two the second pair also leaks glue into his hair and his electrical tape fix doesn't help (also this clip of bdubs noticing his headset change is from the same day that episode released)

2016 - does surgery and superglues the one pair but it sucks, so he does surgery on the first pair. speculates it could be a computer issue. in august he figures out how to fix the game sounds issue from 2012.

June 2017 - comment of the day on his Situation; it's bad. it's still bad. doing bad. does say he's switched to the AT.

December 2017 - breaks superglued headset and records with glue all over his fingers, making them totally numb. switched to less broken set and notes 'i don't have to use kleenex with this pair' so i guess the AT didn't last long.

2019 - notes he's only had the two pairs but is now using the AT with the new computer (also the SLIIIIIIIIDEEEEEE in of the iconic headset pic made me cackle irl). in that clip where he complains about sticking to his chair after taking a shower he also mentions the AT and that's the last of it.

anyway this is a mystery nobody needed or wanted solved but the real shame here is that. he figures out in 2016 it's probably that his computer is shit, not his mic (though they are shit.) and then doesn't actually get a better computer til 2019 and that's what makes him upgrade. the logitechs were the only thing that would sound good on his old specs.

this also means that he's been using a non-headset mic for the last four years and has never in those four years bothered to get a mic stand, which is why in that shower clip he's complaining about needing to sit a certain way to be the right distance from the mic. btw. he has owned that thing for seven years and been actively using it for four.

usually I can agree or sympathize with discourse posts on here but I just don't understand that take I'm honest... seems a bit rude?? to me. i mean you said yourself there was similarities between double life and vampires pearl so i cannot see how comparing the two is sexist....

Okay so I'm going to go through things on this ask systematically because I guess I can understand where you got confused so I'm both going to somewhat analyze Pearl's character, as well as where the fandom treats her wrong.

SO.

Double Life. Pearl is alone, rejected by her soulmate Scott (and I have things to say about him but that's another post), and is continuously rejected or ousted by other people. I typically read DL!Pearl as aromantic, even though she doesn't have to be, because of the way she is continuously othered by the other lifers in the series. Double Life Pearl is treated like a malady, like something is wrong with her, because she has no soulmate. Scott and Cleo, while they're still treated as being weird (and Martyn), are not treated to the extent that Pearl is. Pearl is made into a boogeyman, someone unstable and made to be feared- and while, yes, Pearl was unstable in Double Life, it was largely a fulfilling prophecy. Had Pearl been given support and not been treated like a monster, she would not have been NEARLY so unstable- but Pearl realized that the others would continue treating her as such, and so she spiralled.

What I'm saying: 5AM Pearl is largely a phenomenon engineered by the perspectives and perceptions of other players. YES she was unhinged, but not nearly to the degree that the others, ESPECIALLY Ren and Scott, treated her. She was treated incredibly poorly and villainized by the other lifers, much past any degree that could have been rationalized.

And this continues into other seasons. Pearl is treated like a living weapon, like a monster on a leash that her allies can use against people, repeatedly. Take Past Life for example- Gem and Grian CONTINUOUSLY dehumanized Pearl, with Grian calling her "our cannon" and both of them using her as an outlet to kill other people. Gem, especially, is infatuated with the idea of 5AM Pearl- take Secret Life and the murder camel and whatever was going on there for instance- and is obsessed with a version of Pearl that doesn't really exist.

And because of perception, the fandom follows suit. The fandom has made 5AM Pearl into a boogeyman, much like the lifers have, something that goes bump into the night or an unhinged woman or a weapon without realizing that's... what they're doing. Much is to be said about how Jimmy is treated as incompetent by the lifers and thus by the fandom as well, no matter what he does or how he places. I blame Scott for both of these. C'est la vie.

AND! Pearl is largely reduced to the people she is with. That is to say, even when her and Grian don't interact much, if they have a crumb of interaction that's all the pearlescentmoon tag is for days. A lot of the fanfics about Pearl until VERY RECENTLY have been almost centered on Grian, and her being related to Grian, and The Villies REALLY did not help. I love yuri, as well, don't get me wrong, but when gempearl/shinyduo was popularized it got bad there as well. It's very rare for me to see solo Pearl ANYTHING unless it's 5AM Pearl, which brings back this romanticization of Pearl from Double Life.

Pearl (the content creator) herself has said that Double Life was her favorite, and I dont doubt it- it's always fun to play the villain, and the lore and angst of Double Life was great and you could not re-engineer it. But I suspect a large reason as to why Pearl loves Double Life is she was alone, and that means that her character gets to shine without ANYONE, no Grian, no Gem, no other vaguely male shaped content creator she interacts with for five seconds. Just her. In character, you could argue that Pearl likes being alone because that's what she's familiar with for angst.

That is, essentially to say- a lot of people reduce Pearl to either Grian, Gem (which was worsened by Past Life), or 5AM Pearl, and are often sexist in doing so. A lot of Pearl's hard work and character development are ignored in favor of popular fanon or popular character pairings, platonic OR romantic. She's either made into a girlboss or a wet little meow meow. People don't look at the nuance or complexities of her character. Honestly, after she died in Past Life I found that all the fanart of her was either with the villies or her grave. Not her. And if you do not understand why that is sexist.... uhm. Well. Perhaps look inwards?

Before I get into analyzing vampires smp, I want to dive into a problem in fandom. While it's been a problem for years now, a lot of people have been talking about it recently- I doubt you haven't seen the posts, as you've implied you've followed me for a while and can sympathize with discourse.

In this corner of the MCYT fandom, there's what feels like an overbearing emphasis on the life series, especially life series fanon like the watchers and listeners, that not everyone enjoys! And for people that enjoy content creators that are less popular, or solely on Hermitcraft, it can become VERY overbearing. A lot of people that wish to discuss Hermitcraft stuff only are overwhelmed with life series stuff. If you haven't read any posts about it, while they are most definitely falsesymmetry centric, @/riacte does a good job ranting about it on her blog. The point is, people neglect huge swathes of the fandom to focus on the life series, and it can become VERY annoying.

A large amount of popular headcanons for basically any fandom involve the life series- while I wasn't active, I remember there was a witches SMP a few years ago, and almost all the fanfiction included flower husbands- one of whom was NOT actively on the SMP. Shipification and life seriesification HAS harmed fandom spaces- it seems impossible to talk about anything that isn't the watchers, or the life series, or a popular ship from the life series right now, and it's frustrating.

So, we go into Vampires SMP. A new, interesting SMP, with an entirely new interesting character, that I'm excited to learn about. And people, instead of engaging meaningfully in the new narrative that Pearl is trying to create, the new worldbuilding, the new SMP that 5AM Pearl and the Villies have nothing to do with- they're making it about the life series. And that can be incredibly discouraging to fans of the actual SMP, who want to see more about that SMP and not more life series.

I don't care if Vampires SMP!Pearl has similarities with Double Life Pearl! Maybe Pearl just wants to act a bit batty (ha) again! Not every batty woman is the same!!!

What I'm saying is that people are being sexist by reducing Pearl to a stereotype and refusing to engage with the content she creates outside of the popular fandom lens.

TLDR; People don't engage with her outside of a specifically curated lens created by fanon and popular fandom pairings, and it holds her back when she tries to do something new because of that.

Watari was a 17 year old girl, who NEVER mentioned anything she could go back to. She seemed to suffocate under the pressure of her home life. She was an active girl that had a lot of responsibilities such as home chores, taking care of her siblings, cooking for her family (something that if she did not do, we found out no dinner would be served at home that day) and she also had her dancing team too, which she led. She was the reason if divorcing of her parents and she hoped during the divorce her dad would pick her so she wouldn't have to live a life where she needed to act as her sibling's parent.

Do you know HOW important that point is? Because for a kid to force their parents into divorce just so they could escape parentification, it means said child is NOT doing well at all. As we know, her plan failed and it made things even harder on her because now she knew that their father did not love them. And so she goes on with her life and the busy schedule imo makes it harder to process her emotions about her siblings and mom.

And ho behold, suddenly she finds herself kidnapped into a killing take. A game in which she has something she never had before; free time. Free time to think about her life, free time to try and have fun. During the killing game she remains loud and cheerful and optimistic. She seems happy, right? Well, yeah, but she also never brings up her life. The killing game seemed like a place where she finally managed to escape the responsibilities thrust upon her back home. And of course with that much time and seeing other students die, she starts to think about her life. She loses a dear friend (Okazaki) and at the same time discovers that she did not know that person like she thought she did. At. All. She had to grapple with the fact that her friend ruined the lives of many ppl for nothing but theatrics. She can't even talk about Okazaki to others and how despite everything Okazaki did, her heart mourns her.

Because no one else was close to Okazaki and most ppl had negative opinions on her (wada,hayashi, yanagi, ojima, hiroaki). So ofc she had to keep her thoughts to herself and try to make sense of her grief. And then, she just. Gets tired. Her life song is pretty interesting to me, because it sounds... melancholic in a way. She decides that she doesn't have anything joyful she could go back to. She decides that her life should just end and well, why not do something useful with your suicide? Why not save one of the few ppl that has struggled a lot in this killing game? Hama who has his little sister and mom to go back to? Hama who promised to treat her like a little sister and to be her older brother.

Shes tired. Shes gonna die. The others she isnt as close with. She is *selfish* she HAS the right to be selfish once in her life, her whole life was selfless sacrifice for ppl who didnt even appreciate her. So why not try and save Hama as a bonus?

I think Watari deserved so much more grace than ppl are willing to give her.

Yes, Hama died because of her actions, but so did Isono, so did Chiba, so did Kamimura and Tsuno. Watari isnt the first person who killed someone with their plan.

Also cmon, guys. Suicide and depression TRAMPS loggic. She was clearly the representation of "People that smile brightest aren't always that happy"

I don't think she used Hama. Honestly her plan was pretty bright. She had ppl confused for a long time. She did make a choice for Hama, which is unfair BUT wr have to think of it in her POV

Suicide and suicidal ideations suck. Okay? They do. They are awful. No one wants to paint them positively! Because they arent. When a human being starts to fantasize about their suicide THEY dont do it just for the fun of it. Suicide is refered to so as the cancer of the brain, because it infests your brain without your permission. It robs you of logic, of emotions. IT gives you tunnel sight which js trained only on ending the hrt you feel inside of your chest. It tires out out. Drains the life out of you. Why are we demanding perfection from a depressed person?
