A better, more positive Tumblr

Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has always been a place for wide open, creative self-expression at the heart of community and culture. To borrow from our founder David Karp, we’re proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.

Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past, we’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr. We’ve realized that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change. Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).  

Let’s first be unequivocal about something that should not be confused with today’s policy change: posting anything that is harmful to minors, including child pornography, is abhorrent and has no place in our community. We’ve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content. To this end, we continuously invest in the enforcement of this policy, including industry-standard machine monitoring, a growing team of human moderators, and user tools that make it easy to report abuse. We also closely partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, two invaluable organizations at the forefront of protecting our children from abuse, and through these partnerships we report violations of this policy to law enforcement authorities. We can never prevent all bad actors from attempting to abuse our platform, but we make it our highest priority to keep the community as safe as possible.

So what is changing?

Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.

Why are we doing this?

It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.

So what’s next?

Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes won’t happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.

Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. We’re relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.

Most importantly, we’re going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we’re making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.

Like you, we love Tumblr and what it’s come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We won’t always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.

Adjusting | Elizabeth

Home had become a shell. He occupied the living room, and his base in Afghanistan, like a snail. When he was deployed, he worried he would outgrow suburbia. But when he returned, home fell over his shoulders. It was too big for him and became a prison.

Even so, he managed, despite his shaking hands, to light a few candles–for scent, not ambiance–on the kitchen counter. He only burned himself twice. A Bowie song she would remember, “Golden Years”, echoed behind him from the living room. The digital clocked blinked noisily at him in wide green font: 5:53. He remembered that she was never late. 

He stood behind the front door and stared at it. Was she on the other side? Like he was once on the other wide of the world? Did she think of him when he was there, like he was thinking of her here?

But when the door bell rung, he jumped. He wasn’t ready. The house was too big. But he remembered how she could fill a room, with her wit and wide framed glasses. And so he opened the door with a charming,

“Good morning!”

Although, she had come for dinner.

As she approached his front door, repeatedly adjusting her glasses (which were already quite straight), Elizabeth’s heart hammered so hard in her chest that she could almost swear that she heard it in her ears.  The bottle of sparking cider she carried was cold, so perhaps the condensation would disguise her sweaty palms.  Why on Earth was she nervous?  She was only going to have dinner with an old high school friend, one she hadn’t seen in years!

Yes…an old high school friend whom she had been head-over-heels in love with before she even really knew what love was, and whom she had never quite forgotten, although she had certainly tried.  She had loved Alvar too, otherwise she wouldn’t have let him move in with her, even knowing his reputation of having a wandering eye.  It was foolish of her to think that he would change that aspect of himself for her, or anyone else, and it had ended badly. 

Even before things with Alvar went south, she still occasionally thought about Danny, wondering how he was, and wondering what she could have done differently.  Why had they even had a falling out?  Thinking back, so much of it could have been patched up with proper communication on both sides, had they only known how.

Now they were so much older, and he had a daughter.  They were meeting as friends, and only friends…so why were her hands so clammy, and why was she having second thoughts?  She wasn’t ready!

She rang the doorbell.

Was that David Bowie playing?  It was!

And then he greeted her with a ‘good morning’, even though it was evening, and her nervousness melted away and was replaced by a bright smile.  It seemed he was nervous, too.  “Hello.  I brought something to go with dinner; I hope you don’t mind.”  She awkwardly offered the cider.  Okay, maybe she was still a little bit nervous.

“Did I just say ‘good morning?’ Why did I answer the door saying…” He placed his palm over his mouth and heaved a wheezy laugh into it. After he ran his hand down his face, he grabbed his jaw and his cheeks were a little flushed under his deep tan. He looked both helpless and amused. “Please, please come in,” he said, as his left arm hugged her shoulders while the right took the cider from her. There was no coat to take from her because it was summer. “Thank you for bringing this, it’s wonderful. Take off your shoes if you’d like.” It was hard to tell if what he was wearing were shoes or slippers, as the material was made of a dark leather. From the front, it appeared to be a loafer but the backs were open. When he walked, the heels of his feet peeked under the hem of his pants and were certainly a lighter shade than the rest of his visible skin. “Moqueca’s almost done.”

The sun was beginning to drag its feet further away from the white marble countertops in his kitchen, but the wide-span doors kept most of the remaining light inside. In-wall fixtures dimly lit the table above them. On the table was white and blue ceramic bowls and serving platters with plantains, rice, and raw tomatoes with onion. “Did you find the place okay? I know it’s a little hidden, and uh…” He leaned on the counter next to the oven, making sure he wasn’t too near the open flame. “The parking’s terrible on this street this time of night. I completely forgot.”

She laughed softly, shaking her head and turning red herself.  She had done that sort of thing before, along with thinking it’s the wrong day of the week.  “Don’t worry about it.”

Briefly returning his one-armed hug, she took him up on his offer to take her shoes off...but with a certain bashfulness.  Normally she preferred to leave her shoes on during a visit, but she was mindful of the fact that some people didn’t allow shoes to be worn in their house, and what sounded like a polite offer could very well be a hint about house rules.  Still, she wished she hadn’t worn a pair of Care Bears socks that day!  She put her shoes by the door and nodded.  “Oh, yeah, I’ve been in this neighborhood before.  There’s a really nice coffee shop down the street.  I just used the parking garage and walked.”

Inhaling appreciatively, she smiled.  “Mm, smells delicious!  Um, how was your day?”

Okay, maybe she was still feeling a bit nervous.
