FRANKENSTEIN 2025 RANT
i know i’ve already talked about it but i’ve taken some time to think more about it so i want to share my thoughts about the new movie again and rant
if you enjoyed the movie, that is completely fine!!! i don’t think it’s an awful movie and a lot of what i am about to say i would not care as much about if i hadn’t been a die hard frankenstein fan going into it. i think GDT is a good director and has made great films i just don’t consider frankenstein 2025 to be up there
the new movie has caused me to see a bunch of stupid fucking frankenstein takes that PISS ME OFF!!!!!!!! no but like actually it’s infuriating and almost all on tiktok and twitter
The movie was fine, but if I see one more person say that it’s better than the book I might delete tiktok for good,, Saw a comment saying essentially “yeah no the book was worse because elizabeth was shallow and the story and plot was bad and not well written or interesting” you are the shallow one i’m afraid
Elizabeth’s character in the movie was fine, but she was just about the opposite of Elizabeth in the book. Elizabeth Lavenza is an incredible character because it oftentimes will take more than one read of the book to truly grasp her character. She’s idolized(along with the rest of the frankensteins+henry) by Victor but his view of her is more like some sort of concept rather than a person. When she’s actually seen in the story, she isn’t truly as Victor described and we see that she’s a real person with agency. The movie gave her more agency, an attitude, and interest in bugs, which I see many use as a reason as to why she has ‘more depth,’ but I find her writing was more shallow. In the book, her role as a woman makes her ultimately helpless, yet still tries to go against the unjust system to save Justine, while Victor stays silent out of fear of shame. I personally don’t find her character in the movie to have been very interesting because it felt to me like a cheap attempt to give her personality when an integral part to her character in the original novel was based on her lack of individuality because she was a woman in that time period. Another reason it felt shallow to me is because ultimately her only role was to make Victor jealous and be a mother figure to the creature. Apologies if what I’m saying sounds disconnected I’m writing this while out for dinner,,
Victor’s character suffered the most in the new adaptation. He was a completely different person, and while I think it could’ve worked, the execution made him end up being a comically evil man which erased the morally grey aspect from both him and the creature. Victor is not supposed to be a villain. The creature is meant to be sympathetic, but you’re never meant to root for him and antagonize Victor. The entire tagline of the movie was ‘Only Monsters Play God,’ which while it fits the movie, I disagree with it in regard to the book. Victor is absolutely not a good person, but I find it unfair to say he’s just as monstrous when his biggest crime is negligence and being self absorbed, while the creature is responsible for the death of 5 people whose only crime was having loved Victor. I get he had a sad backstory, but I don’t think it can justify child murder. That’s more of a personal gripe, though.
Victor’s childhood being sad I do think could’ve been an okay change to his character, considering the movie was made to be about generational trauma, but I found it wasn’t executed well. His mother is shown to be so important to him, and I think it would’ve been cool if they showed more of Victor’s compassionate side and the impression his mother left on him through his relationship with his brother, but oh my god bro don’t even get me started on William. His character had so much potential but not only was it complete nothingburger, but it ended up being genuinely bad when they used his death to scream at the audience “Victor is the real monster!!!!” as if it wasn’t already so obvious to literally everyone watching. It came out of nowhere and it completely tore me out of the immersion in the movie theatre and reminded me that it was a netflix movie. Jacob Elordi did a great job though I thought his acting was fantastic. The creature was too sympathetic but he just balanced out Victor’s wickedness I guess
A lot of the movie’s symbolism just seemed very shallow to me, if that makes sense. “Victor is constantly wearing red gloves to symbolize the blood on his hands!” wow.. really…. I also kind of found the thing with him and his mom kind of weird. He’s in love with Elizabeth who has the same actor as his mom, Mia Goth, and I get it’s meant to be a reference to Victor and Elizabeth’s like pseudo incestuous relationship in the book but see it actually seemed to matter in the book. It didn’t really like add anything to the movie in my opinion, especially since Elizabeth didn’t look a lot like his mother, and she didn’t act anything like her either. It felt kind of pointless to me. (this point is more open to interpretation) Victor’s subconscious discomfort with his engagement is very likely due to his familial bond with Elizabeth and part of why he pushed his family away as being with them was a constant reminder of his promise to his mother that he had to fulfill and how he only seemed to recover in the presence of Henry, someone outside of his family. A lot of the storytelling is just very blunt and obvious in my opinion… it isn’t like bad per se, I just find it baffling that people genuinely believe that it’s better than the book.
holy yap ok i’m done ranting
Actually one more thing I’m sick of people saying the creature is actually named “Adam.” No he isn’t stop spreading misinformation…. it’s killing me… There’s nothing wrong with the headcanon I just find it really annoying when people confidently say “ACTUALLY he prefers Adam☝️” NO HE DOESNT!
I liked the laudanum reference though in the movie.. Victor why did you just mention in a single paragraph that you were dependent on opium and never mention it again
Yeah whatever I’m actually done now. I was ranting in my head this morning and it sounded a lot more precise and cool and smart but now I just sound like a hater
hi i still love frankenstein im just ocpilled right now
i’m sure it’s been talked about plenty of times on tumblr but i feel like i never see people talk about how victor was absolutely experiencing psychosis when he was creating the creature. specifically grief psychosis that intensified when he was sent off to ingolstadt.
he sees the creature as a beautiful creation and is obsessed with it until after he’s created it and finally snaps out of his delusion, as shown by him suddenly seeing the reality of the project he spent years on.
that’s part of why i find victor to be such a tragic character, as well as why i think the new movie botched his character so bad. he lost the tragic aspect of his character and just became like. comically villainous. i also think a lot of why people immediately jump to say victor is the “true monster” is because his mental illness isn’t given much attention. anyway i only wrote this because i miss victor frankenstein and people are so mean to him. i’ve been trapped on evil frankenstein tiktok. it feels like i’m in hell.
saw someone say in a comment on tt that the creature was equivalent to a newborn baby and lacked all critical thinking skills and that’s why all the murder of victor’s innocent family was okay……….. what…
is ur art free to use as pfp? :D with creds ofc
yes!!!
i love love love your victor frankenstein art it's like if mary shelley was obsessed with genshin impact
TYSM that’s such a compliment…. i don’t think my henry design would translate as well as victor’s though because of his curly hair,, i’ve actually been getting into genshin again ever since nod-krai was released and all my characters are out of meta🥀
i love love love genshin designs(90% of the time…. i don’t know what they were thinking with natlan designs…) they’re very complex, which can be very challenging when it comes to drawing them and animation, but because of the complexity the design team is able to implement so many cultural and symbolic elements to make it not just look pretty but also tell a story
GOD I LOVE VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN
hello i changed his design again. i’m trying to find a good balance so that he doesn’t look like a generic anime boy im really trying man. its in my blood. i dont want him to look like , actually realistic either though because i find that really boring but i want him to still have like a nice design yanno…
this was like a 15 minute doodle but i wanted to post something frankenstein again i just love him so much i cant believe the new movie botched his character so badly
Watched the new Frankenstein movie…. by golly… here’s a lame tumblr review of it by a diehard frankenstein fan……….
movie spoilers!!!!!!
As a movie, I’d say it was pretty solid. It was beautiful and every shot was gorgeous(not counting when oscar isaac ran around butt ass naked.) My only minor gripes would be with William’s last words coming out of nowhere and being needlessly cruel and just sounding completely stupid and ooc, as well as the shit ending. oh my god bruh
i went into it already knowing how it ended because of a comment i saw online which perfectly describes how bad it was.
“I actually really enjoyed the ending because I think of it as like the creature’s hallucination”
Besides that the movie was good I enjoyed it. as a movie. As an adaptation? oh my god
Victor’s entire character is completely butchered in the movie. I get why they removed Henry from the film now. His entire childhood is replaced by one where he had an abusive and cold father with his mother dying when he was young. Victor’s whole childhood was meant to be tragic, hence the removal of Henry. It’s ok they would’ve butchered Henry too I’m sure. Victor is like way too old I hated that they made him like >30 it was so weird (also there was ZERO reason to include a whole scene of oscar isaac running around butt ass naked WHAT) he’s such a huge fucking asshole dude and you feel zero sympathy for Victor. His sudden regret and forgiveness at the end of the movie was absolutely absurd because Victor would not fucking do that, especially this version of Victor who’s such a selfish asshole oh my godd
anyway. i didn’t like victor.
The creature was good he was very sympathetic, like maybe a little too sympathetic, though. They totally took away his whole morally grey thing.
That brings me to my main criticism with the film and that’s how they completely got rid of the fact that Victor and the creature are morally grey characters and they made it painfully black and white. Victor is a selfish prick who you’re meant to dislike and find creepy, while the creature is just meant to be seen as a sweet baby being hurt by the world. It misses so much of the nuance and I can’t believe I saw somebody online saying it surpassed the book. What.
Having a male director, the film loses so much of its femininity and the underlying message about misogyny is completely lost. Elizabeth’s character is stale and flat. In the book, Victor treats her like some sort of idol or concept rather than a human being, which was completely intentional, though it seems Guillermo del Toro missed that. During Justine’s trial, when you get to see Elizabeth in person, it’s shown that’s she’s much more than what Victor describes. She fights as hard as she can to save Justine, and cares so much, but as a woman she isn’t listened to. The only person who could save Justine, a man, was too afraid and kept silent, resulting in Justine’s death.
Elizabeth’s whole character in the movie is so lame and dull that I can’t believe there are people thinking she has more depth than in the book. I understand that in the book you have to actively look for it, but god it’s so awful in the movie. Making a girl smart and giving her an attitude is not depth. oh my god. She was so lame and her only role in the movie is to be Victor’s love interest to trigger jealousy in him, and to be a motherly figure to the creature to, again, trigger jealousy in Victor. I was so thoroughly disappointed by her character that it compelled me to write a tumblr rant. I don’t even use tumblr like ever!!!! i’m too twitter pilled but twitter is becoming such an awful website so maybe i’ll just make the switch,,,
TLDR; as a movie it was a 7.5/10, as an adaptation it gets a generous 3/10. It missed so many of the key elements and WHY WOULD THEY QUOTE LORD BYRON AT THE END. WHATT?????
sorry victor frankenstein i might’ve redesigned you but unfortunately you are STILL!!! an anime boy. it’s the only thing i can do.
did anyone else. Read that independent critic review of frankenstein 2025. it had me baffled for a good half hour it was truly awful like genuinely i felt horrified reading it because how can you say “like i guess it’s faithful to the original book b-but what about the 1931 movie” THAT MOVIE WAS ASS THEY CREDITED “mrs percy b shelley” INDTESD OF MARY DHELLEY oh my god bruh if you’re like autistic about frankenstein don’t read it because it’ll make you livid
i’m so excited for frankenstein 2025 even if they cut out. henry. and if victor frankenstein is ugly and pushing 50(im lesbian)
