Theories on Yautja Biology, Anatomy, and Culture SFW Edition

I'll be adding more in reblogs as I remember things, because the brain doesn't always work the way it should.

Question 1: How do they detect scents?

I have two theories for this. The first theory is that the inside lining of their mandibles acts like a sensory organ, detecting scents, pheromones, and what have you. My second theory is that they have more traditional scent sensing organs, nostril-like structures hidden near the eye region, because of how deep set their eyes are. Either of these theories could be supported by a specific scene in Prey, in which Feral spreads his mandibles slightly as he seems to inhale some sort of scent from the dust.

Question 2: How do they drink/what sort of utensils do they use? This is answered in a more headcanon-type way, but I really think that the Yautja would have 2 primary drinking vessels. Wide, flat cups like traditional sake cups would be easier to maneuver between mandibles, or they could use some sort of straw like impliment. As for other utensils they might use, I don't really imagine them using many eating utensils. I can fully imagine a Yautja just full on eating from a big chunk of meat or a larger fruit just by holding it in place with their mandibles. Which brings us to the third theory I have for today. Question 3: What do the Yautja Eat? Clearly, a major part of their diet is going to be meat from their hunts. I don't imagine that the Yautja have stores and shops where they could go buy other foods. It is highly improbable that a Yautja can get all of the nutrients it needs simply from meat; we see this a lot in people who only eat one type of food, where they have deficiencies in different vitamins and minerals. So I fully believe that the Yautja are not simply a society of hunters, but rather hunter-gatherers. There may be different roles within the clans, those who gather, those who perhaps cultivate small groves or have bred specific creatures for use as livestock. While a Yautja's diet may primarily consist of meat, I do believe that they will also consume tree fruits, roots, berries, and perhaps even some types of seeds and herbs. I also support the idea that different clans have different diets. A coastal clan may eat more fish and sea creatures, perhaps even gather shellfish. A clan from the jungle may supplement its diet with fruits and tubers gathered from the jungle. And desert clans may eat cactus-like fruits or supplement their diets with insects.

Theories on Yautja Cuisine and Artisans, part 2:

Hello, once again I am back to share my theories and headcannons on the Yautja.

In the comics (AvP: Prey) we can see that the Yautja do drink some sort of fermented beverage, probably similar to wine if made with fruit, or beer if made with grain. Which brings me to a theory that the Yautja probably do consume some sort of bread, or at least have the capability to create it. The production of alchohol or other fermented drinks means that they have access to yeast, probably a wild variety as is used in making things like sourdough, wine, and certain drinks like ginger beer. And if they have it, I don't see why they wouldn't use it.

This opens up multiple opportunities for creativity in their diets. I imagine that if they do consume bread or bread like foods, they may be more like flatbreads than a traditional loaf.

They may also use blood in their cooking, much like in blood sausage or in bread as the Vikings and ancient Assyrian people did. I feel like the Yautja would honor their kills by using as much of the animal as possible, from the hide and bones as trophies, to the meat, blood, and organs as food.

For my theories on the different artisans in Yautja culture, we look to some of the things we know about them.

Notably, their weapons, armor, and tools. I believe that just like in human society, there are skilled masters in each trade. A Yautja may be able to repair their weaponry or perhaps craft simple weapons such as spears or blades, but it may take a master craftsman to create such a weapon as the plasma swords seen in Badlands.

A question that came to my mind when rewatching Badlands was brought on by one of my own hobbies outside of fandom- textiles. We see the different Yautja wearing what appears to be some sort of cloth rather than leather, as is seen in Kwei's design with the red fabric of his loincloth, or with Dek's tunic tearing into fibers. What sort of material could that be? Plant based? Animal based, like wool or long-stranded hair spun together? Do the Yautja weave it themselves, or do they trade with other clans or species?

Other artisans I have found evidence for, believe it or not, are tattoo artists (The Elder from AVP has tattoos on his mandibles, and his fangs are engraved), jewelsmiths/glassworkers (the Elder from Predator 2 wears what appear to be glass or stone beads), and piercers, from the various piercings we see across several Yautja.

While it is possible that the Yautja have simply taken these items from their kills, it could also mean that their clans are far more diverse than we could ever imagine.

Mayenka is a young Yautja hunter.

Safe to say Kajiy was the first to discover about Rak'ne's crush on Valka

Hraxan is my own version of a horse in the Yautja world, but with my own twist.

Their front legs are much stronger, while their hind legs are mostly used for pushing off. Despite their massive size, they are actually very fast. They are also extremely stubborn and strong-willed, which is why they are not always used as riding animals. There are more loyal species for that, which I’ll draw later.
