Yesterday I got my rejection letter from the UK government for a visa to work and live legally with my partner, a British citizen. I now have 14 days to appeal or get sent back to the states, where I am estranged from family, have no home, and sparse accessibility to my medication.

Yesterday I got my rejection letter after being kept in the dark and waiting for fifteen months for an application I was told would take two when I applied. Unable to legally work, financially dependent on a partner I promised I'd live alongside, not under, stranded in this beaurocratic hell.

Yesterday I got my rejection letter after the UK government and home office ignoring countless emails, phone calls, and mailed letters. After being told this was normal and that I'd just have to wait. At the twelve month point they finally, finally checked my application at me begging to find that it was "affected by technical issues".

Yesterday I got my rejection letter. Why? Apparently I applied to the wrong version of application and I wasn't supposed to be in the country for the application type. They took my passport. They left me waiting for fifteen months. They left me stranded, jobless, with no agency. Then they blamed me. Fifteen months ago they gladly took £3000 off my partner and I for the visa application, took me through the entire process to get my biometrics scanned, took my passport, and presumably forgot about or lost my application until I caused a stink.

Now we are having to spend another £5,000 to beg me to stay with an attorney. Apparently all the things that weren't written on the government website were expected to be known to us through a professional, so it's now our fault.

Fuck borders.
