The emancipation of Hungarian Jews in the 1860s manifested itself in many synagogues built at the end of the century, which constituted sacred centres of the empire. I feel like a lot of people act as if the ancient Israelites are an extinct culture when we (Jews and Samaritans) are literally still here. Jews and Samaritans didn't "replace" the Israelites, but are a continuation of that culture.

And I think the idea that the ancient Israelites are an extinct culture feeds the supercessionist mindset of the general population with regards to claims on religious texts and practices, indigenaity of Jews and even Jewish identity itself.

Regarding that second bit, I want to "yes, and" it, because that's exactly what is foundational to beliefs as disparate as Islamism to Black Hebrew Israelites to British Israelism to the Mormons and more:

The friend I lost last year, who said stuff like "voodoo and hoodoo are not for white people" and "I don't think you should study Appalachian folk magic if you're not from Appalachia" told me Lilith was a Christian creation to uphold the patriarchy and that her being "the personification of child death" was a Christian lie.

He was extremely upset when I told him Lilith was a Jewish demon and was ancient before Christianity was even thought of.

I just find it so fascinating that people just can't seem to grasp the idea of "hey this very very old culture came up with a mythological explanation for why sometimes children die suddenly seem for seemingly no reason." Seems like the kind of things a lot of cultures might come up with!

So many cultures when you go back have various just-so stories that explain "yes this happens because of X."

right now the trump administration is attacking the public lands in the Southwestern US. most recently (July 2026), in Utah the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments have been cut by over 90% to allow for mining. these lands are sacred to multiple Native nations in the area and contain irreplaceable archeological sites. additionally, the commission of Native representatives who aided in management of these lands has been dissolved leaving Native people without a voice in caring for the remaining land. here in New Mexico, the 10 mile buffer zone surrounding Chaco Canyon preventing oil and gas drilling is under attack. Chaco Canyon contains incredibly old and incredibly fragile archeological sites sacred to Pueblo people. these sites are threatened by mining and drilling. (read more here)

The attack on the Chaco buffer zone is currently in a public comment period open until July 29. PLEASE leave a public comment to save these irreplaceable places.
