Hey, my friend needs a little help. They're gonna be getting top surgery soon but absolutely need the money. I'm not asking for you to donate too much if you can't but if you can, please. It would also be appreciated if you can spread this around as much as possible. Donators get little art perks, and theres also a Meal Train page to get them get meals while recovering from it. Thank you all.
Twelve years. It had been twelve years since Jack and Jill Perry, then only ten years old, had wandered into the gym that Austin Matelson trained at with hopes of finding a trainer for Jack. It had been twelve years of Austin getting to know the two children, taking them under his proverbial wing as a secondary father figure. Whereas Austin had never thought about having children, he had taken to being a secondary father with pride. It extended beyond the in-ring work with Jack, helping Jill and Jack with homework and navigating life. Austin had proudly watched as the two grew from his trainees to his children, from silent ten-year-olds to a pair of twenty-two-year-olds with their own secret language.
It was time to move on from the seedy little independent promotions to a real home, one where he and Jack could prove just how good they were. It had been the burgeoning All Elite Wrestling that had given both Jack and Austin, under the comfortable guise of the wrestling dinosaur Luchasaurus, a chance to prove how good they were. Instead of a tag team match, the two would be making their debut as part of a battle royal. It may not have been their chosen match, but it was a chance to shine none-the-less. He and Jack felt ready, willing to show how all the training had paid off.
It was Jill who seemed to be the most nervous about their new home.
Austin was just pulling into a parking space at the arena, the May sun peeking out from behind the clouds and bringing warmth to the otherwise chilly air. Jill fidgeted with her seatbelt, eyes trained on the arena building in front of them. Her nervous energy cut through the excited energy Jack exuded from the backseat like a hot knife through butter. Austin glanced over at her, a patient kindness to the gentle hand he placed on her shoulder, "You okay, Jilly bean?"
"I…I dunno about this…" Jill's voice was barely above a whisper, though she didn't glance away from the building that loomed in the distance. To Austin, the building represented a positive change to the life he had been living. It was a chance to make a name for himself, a bigger name for himself than Lucha Underground had ever offered. To Jill, however, the building just represented change. It was an uncertain future and, unlike Jack, Jill's mind did not handle change well.
From the corner of his eye, Austin could see Jack fingerspell one word, "𝑆-𝑐-𝑎-𝑟-𝑒-𝑑.ᐣ"
Austin gave a nod to the young man, before his attention moved back to Jack's slightly younger sister, "You don't have to be afraid, Jill. This place? It's full of people you already know. It won't be that much of a change."
Jill's brow furrowed, but the recognizable click of the seat belt unbuckling let Austin know that he was on the right track with his words, "It's so big. It's an arena that we haven't been to before and…it's too big…"
"You don't have to go to the ring with us if you don't want to," Austin confirmed with a glance to the backseat where Jack gave a nod to confirm he felt the same way. Austin noticed the way that Jill wrapped the ends of the sleeves of her baby blue cardigan decorated with fluffy white clouds around her hands meant that she did not agree with the thought of staying in the back by herself, "Or, you can always come with us. We'd love to have you by our side."
"Will we find anybody that…𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑠…like us there?" Jill's voice was small and timid.
For a moment, Austin wondered exactly what that statement meant. He took in the emphasis on the word looks. Jill wasn't usually someone who concerned herself with how she dressed or her colorful use of makeup. Jill was typically unashamed of how she expressed herself. It struck Austin that the looks were not about the superficiality of looking good, it was about the reason that Jill expressed herself in the way she did. It was the reason Jack was so often non-verbal, the diagnosis that the twins had been given long before he had ever met them that fateful day in the gym. "Oh, sweetie…are you worried about…"
Jill gave another nervous nod, chewing on her lower lip, "What if we don't fit in?"
"The three of us will always have each others backs," Austin promised, "even if no one else in this entire company is like you or Jack, the three of us will always have each others backs."
Jill sniffled and wiped at her eyes with the back of her sleeve, before opening the car door. She was the first out, followed by Jack, and then finally Austin himself. Austin crossed to the back of the rental car, popping the trunk up to start handing out their travel bags. While Jack's was a black duffel bag with a keychain of a banana clipped to it and Austin's was an army green duffel bag with a plush Chomper from Land Before Time clipped to it, Jill carried only what looked like a child's backpack decorated with Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat. She slid it onto her back, looping her thumbs through the red straps that now sat over her shoulders. Stepping out of the driver's seat of a nearby gray SUV, a plus-sized girly with curly black hair watched the trio pass before calling out, "Oh my god!"
Jack quickly moved to get in-between the stranger and his sister, hands balled into fists at his side in case he needed to fight the stranger. Jill seemed to shy away, her hands tightening around the straps of her backpack, but refusing to meet the gaze of the other woman. Austin noticed the stranger's confusion and spoke up, "Can we help you?"
"Her bag!" the woman beamed as she pulled her own from the backseat, a red suitcase decorated with a large black Mickey Mouse head on the front, "It's so cute!"
Jill gave a wide grin, emboldened by the other woman's very enthusiastic compliment, "I like yours too! I'm Jilly and this is Jack and this is Au…Luchasaurus."
"Kelani," the woman in jeans a tour shirt for an artist named Powerline that Austin had never heard of before beamed back, "You guys working here, too? It's nice to meet a friendly face or three!"
"Well, Jack and Luchasaurus are," Jill informed, "I only kinda do. Do you wanna walk with us?"
Kelani looked very appreciative as she wheeled her bag behind her, "Please? I was sorta nervous about coming here by myself."
"You don't have to be nervous," Jill beamed at the woman as she fell into step with the others. Any trace of the nerves that Jill had once felt were gone, replaced by a need to have to take care of her new friend, "You have us."
It was the very first thing that Austin Matelson noticed from across the crowded gym as he lifted barbells with a few of the other boys who were hopefuls in his profession. Professional wrestling was a big step from his masters degree in medieval literature or his time on Big Brother, but with his size Austin had fallen into the groove rather quickly. He had been an adult, however, with the size to back it up. These two were children, small and presumably lost children. If the rest of the gym wasn't going to help the lost little ones, then he would.
Austin placed the weights back on the rack, ever the gentleman with his gym etiquette, before crossing to the young duo. He knelt in front of them, trying to lower his massive frame to their level as not to scare them. Seeing the duo up close, Austin could see that he was right about the two being children. The boy seemed interested in everything going on around him, his curious brown eyes taking in the men who were doing everything from lifting weights to jogging on the treadmills. The girl, however, seemed to shy away from what was going on, her hand clasped tightly in her twins. They had to be twins, judging from their identical hair. At most, these frizzy haired interlopers were ten years old. "Hey, guys! You lost?"
The little girl shied away from Austin for a moment, letting go of her brother's hand and giving an apprehensive glance at him as if she were seizing up what a threat he could be. It took a moment before the young girl broke into a smile, revealing a gap between her front two teeth. "I'm Jill! This is my brother Jack! We're twins, but he's older! He doesn't know what boundaries are!"
Austin suppressed the chuckle that threatened to leave at the girls very enthusiastic response. Her frizzy pigtails had moved with each bob of her head. He realized that he had lost track of the twin, Jack, until he felt someone climbing onto his back. Two small arms wrapped around his neck and Austin realized it was the small boy who had wandered so bravely into the gym. "Oh! You're right, Jill! I see what you mean about those personal boundaries! He doesn't have a good grip on those, huh?"
"Nope!" The p in her statement was pronounced with a little pop, followed by another wide grin, "But if he's clinging to you, it means you likes you! He only really does that with our dad!"
Austin have never considered having kids before. It wasn't like he had a long-term partner to even consider these things with, nor had the thought ever crossed his mind on his own. His idea of a good night was curling up in his favorite armchair with a good book while some documentary played forgotten in the background as he enjoyed a nice up of hot tea that sat on the side table next to him. Children were messy, loud, and would take away from that long-admired silence. These two were adorable, as far as children were concerned. "So, Jill, where are your parents?"
"Our mom is at home and our dad is parking the car!" Jilly grinned proudly, "Dad say's he's gonna find Jack a trainer!"
𝐴 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑟.ᐣ These two, at least the boy, wanted to train? Austin knew that there were wrestlers in the United Kingdom who trained young, but the culture in the wrestling world was different overseas. He ran a hand through his long black hair, careful not to hit Jack who still hung from his shoulders like some sort of primate. "Train? Little monkey boy here wants to be a wrestler?"
Austin could feel Jack nod enthusiastically as Jill giggled, "He wants to try! We went to Summerslam with our dad and had such a good time! Jack wants to be a wrestler when he grows up too!"
"And what about you, Jill?" Austin raised an eyebrow, "What are you doing here?"
"Well, I gotta talk for Jack," Jill sounded exasperated, blowing a strand of her hair out of her face, "He doesn't like to talk."
Austin clasped a hand to his chest, "Of course! I didn't even consider!"
The door to the gym was pushed open again and Austin's eyes glanced from the young girl to who he hoped was the duo's father. He had choice words for the man who had decided to drop his children off at the door while he parked the car, allowing them to wander into a gym with possible bad influences. His own father hadn't been the greatest, but at least he had never let Austin wander into a situation such as this. Austin's brown eyes opened in surprise when he recognized the man who walked through the door, a man that Austin had seen a lot of considering he had watched almost every episode of Beverly Hills 90210. Jack's arms moved from around Austin's neck and the young boy scampered over to what Austin now knew was the young boys very famous father. Jill glanced away from the tall frame of Austin as he stood to that of her father and she ran to him, throwing her arms around his leg, "You two aren't bothering this nice man, are you?"
"No papa!" Jill protested with an adamant shake of her head, "This is my friend…uh…"
"Austin, sir," he extended his hand, not believing it as Dylan McKay shook his hand, "you have two lovely children."
"Jack climbed up on his back, dad!" Jill exclaimed, rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet, arms swaying at her side, "I think he's the one!"
"The one?" Austin raised a bushy eyebrow in confusion as the former 90's heartthrob regarded him, "What do you mean, Jill?"
"I think," the duo's father spoke, "that Jill thinks you should be the one to train Jack. And if he climbed up on your back…"
"It means he likes me," Austin finished the statement. The young man looked at Austin with his big brown eyes and as soon as they made eye contact, Austin knew Jill was right. Fate had moved him across the gym to check on these two children. Fate had put Jill and Jack Perry in his life for a reason. The two, for good or for bad, were his to guide through this profession.
