i have a theory that illumination storyboarded like half of the lorax before they actually had a design for onceler and the placeholder was a stick figure with green gloves

and then someone went “wait we should probably finish his design” and someone else went “yeah but I’ve grown attached to the stick figure…”

so they compromised and rendered the stick figure
