Imagine if Santos went to Grey Sloan, and a case brought Carina down to the ER. Carina had to consult on a pregnancy case with Santos. Longdon and others (who had been unnecessarily mean and harsh to her on the show) would warn Dr. DeLuca about her behaviors and tendencies. But Carina saw right through Santos’ façade because of Maya…

She had no problem working with Santos, despite having to put her foot down once when Santos made some unnecessary snarky comments. Gradually, Carina became a mentor figure to Santos- guiding her to drop the harsh exterior she used with patients and colleagues even though Carina was an OB-GYN and Santos worked in the ER.

Carina just couldn’t help herself when it came to taking in misunderstood, frightened strays.

Santos would be so stubborn and reluctant to change at times, but Carina was not one to give up on a person like her- she eventually invited her to dinner at the DeLuca-Bishop household to introduce her to her wife, Maya. She hoped Maya, a woman with her own past trauma who had also been misunderstood and punished for her ambition and mistakes by a white male superior at work, could help guide Santos through the maze.

Santos is imperfect and her trauma and own struggles at times do hurt others, but these aren’t irredeemable character flaws. She deserves care and proper guidance from someone who actually understands someone like her… 💙

Looking at how some people are judging and criticizing Carol now, it honestly reminded me of how people online and in-show used to see Clarke back then.

Do they really have that many problems and/or done the unimaginable harms? They’re both just trying to survive, and then the plot/the people around them somehow pushed them to the position to “save” everyone. At the same time, they were asked (by characters on the show and some people online) to suppress their own personal emotions while still taking on responsibility to care for ALL but themselves.

My two tortured babies 🥲 Carol Sturka, a traumatized lesbian who’s just lost her wife, and a closeted writer who writes sci-fi romance for the heterosexuals due to her own conversion camp trauma; the other, Clarke Griffin, a bisexual underage girl who loves drawing and knows a little about medicine who’s just lost her father, got sent to prison by her mom, and then was exiled to Earth as a lab rat. They both cared deeply about humanity and individuality, and they are doing their best and in my opinion, their trying best wasn’t bad at all.

Swap the genders, and a whole wave of people would already be lining up to kiss their asses…

And in my view, both shows have male characters who are similar to the female leads, or even more extreme in personality or actions- Manousos & Bellamy. Yet comparatively, the male versions were never subjected to the same scale of moral trials or nitpicky criticism at all. 🙄

To be honest, until I finished Season 1 and had some time reflecting on the entire season, I didn’t care much about Helen and their marriage- because I felt Helen wasn’t all in or truly share the passion and love for what Carol truly values- her writing and being a writer, and seems like Carol wasn’t so happy in the marriage.

However, I am now really moved by their relationship thanks to the way the writers have incorporated Helen and their relationship into the story… Helen and the marriage were not on the screen much, but with all the little details, the one liner dialogue, how Carol falters every time Helen’s name’s mentioned… you get to see that Helen was real, and the marriage was REAL. Yes, they are imperfect, and their marriage was imperfect. They had arguments and differences, but they make it all so real, and exactly so HUMAN- despite being imperfect and different, they tried to make things work with each other because they truly love and care about each other.

Now, looking back, Zosia-hivemind and Carol have the exact opposite relationship- the hivemind specifically picked out Zosia because they knew she fits Carol’s ideal type, and once they started interacting, Zosia-hivemind was able to tolerate almost all Carol’s behaviors and outbursts. The “honeymoon” and the seemly perfect fit were all tactics the hivemind used to keep Carol occupied and became dependent on that relationship. It was an intentional illusion created by the hivemind.

Also, for the 100 watchers out there, that last two minutes of the movie really gave us a nod, aye?! I almost screamed and jumped out of my seats when I saw that 👀

Oh imagine they kill both Carina’s brother and wife 😃 leaving her a widow with only a piece of her wife- their daughter- left, but her wife didn’t even know she existed before d-worded. 🚬

I know it is unlikely that the show will kill Maya since Peter Paige is the showrunner and Danielle & Stefania and the rest of the crew well informed on the harmful trope… but still, I can’t trust them fully. They’ve also hinted at Maya getting scared of going to work as a firefighter more and more obviously… I don’t know how I feel about this. Even in this episode, she talked about she’d willing to get pregnant herself if it’s too difficult for Carina… I want her and Carina be the women who can have it all- a thriving wonderful career and a loving family of their own together. Is this really that much to ask?! Have we not seen enough both in real life and in fictions that a woman once falls in love and wants to build a family, they take compromises, they take a step back from achieving their career aspirations… [sigh]

Lastly, call me childish all you want, but personally I physically cannot stand seeing men who directly hurt Maya (and Carina), giving advice to Maya, especially on their baby-making journey. It’s disgusting and unfortunate to me that the writers cannot figure out a way to redeem their beloved men without inserting them again and again to Maya x Carina’s storyline.

I really want to enjoy the episodes and I wish I am able to let myself feel the thrill and the adrenaline of watching the show. But I can’t and I won’t. Because all that’s going on with the cancellation, I am so numb… I am too exhausted mentally and physically to feel anything at all. It is not fair to me, nor to the cast and crew. But here we are, again.

Under the Bridge 1x07 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Absolutely no one has asked for this, but here’s my review: A very quality episode all around- Storytelling, cinematography, acting, all superb work in my opinion. Exactly how I imagined this episode would go after finishing the Under the Bridge book in terms of the case. Definitely stirred up the same emotions as when I was reading the book.

How I interpreted Rebecca’s “obsession” with telling Warren’s story, make sure everybody “knows his heart” seems to align with what the show’s trying to get at- Yes, Warren is a boy who’s had a quiet yet unfortunate life, but he is not Gabe. He is Rebecca. A kid who didn’t know better and did/said horrible things in the heat of the moment that had a much bigger consequene than they could possibly comprehend even afterwards.

It seems to me that Rebecca (the show character) also didn’t fully understand or maybe didn’t want to admit why she so desperately wanted and needed to tell everyone Warren’s heart- She wanted to convince or prove to “the world”- to herself really (and maybe Cam)- that she did monsterous things (bullied her brother, shouted horrible things at him) but she’s not a monster.

Again, I am not passing judgment or taking sides on the true case and real people involved in the case. I am only focusing on the characters and the show’s artistic choices to tell the story from the book. I think the show did a good job capturing the book, aka the real Rebecca’s perspective of the stories around the case, and added more-

1) When Rebecca’s dad read the draft, he brought up that in the story about Reena Virk’s case, she’s everywhere, but yet she is no where to be found in Rebecca’s book. Why is that? What is she afraid of?

2) Suman stared right into Rebecca’s eyes and said Warren saw someone who’s weaker so he did what he did. Then, questioned her if Reena looked like her, do you think he’d still do what he did?! The book in my opinion did not really touched on the racial aspect of the discussion, maybe it only implied or vaguely hinted at, but I like how the show directly point it out. I can’t quite put this into words, but I also felt that what Suman said about Warren in that moment did not see Reena as a person has a slightly different meaning from when the same statement was made during court when they tried to pin Warren for the murder.

3) Similar to the point above, I am not sure if this is intentional on the director/show-creator’s part, but I found it interesting that while the connection between Rebecca and Warren was forming, the show also established a mirror connection between Cam and Dusty 👀 I personally see it as mirroring in terms of race ethnicity but also a mirror comparison in their childhood experience aka the role they both played in the case of Gabe and Reena. Besides wanting to see them continuously showcasing the true case progress, I can’t wait to see if the show will tell us what did happen with Gabe in the last episode? We seem to know the role Dusty/Cam played in the case. We know Warren/Rebecca think they contributed 3/10 parts to Gabe/Reena’s death. We know that Kelly owed 7/10 parts to Reena’s death, then what’s the 7/10 parts to Gabe’s death?! Was it truly an accident or was there something more?

Lastly, the scene between Rebecca x Cam in the bedroom… such wonderful acting by Riley and Lily 🥲

Also, I truly see the real Rebecca shining through Riley’s Rebecca in this episode for some reason…

I like how the show added Cam and Rebecca as characters to the show plots, not just for the tension/“romantic spice” between them, but also because the duo’s own history also reflects on the terrifying aspects of teenage bullying/ignorance and racial prejudice/assimilation to white culture which tie to the overarching theme of the show. And more importantly, I like how their stories serves as mirror parallel to the main Reena Virk storyline: In a way, how they turned out could be how these kids turn out in 10 years. At least it could be one possibility. You clearly see the passing of her brother messed Rebecca and Cam up until present day. They both have yet fully processed their thoughts and experiences. And the unresolved issues/feelings certainly affected their personalities and life choices.

After finishing the book (actually finished listening to the audible), I also listened to the additional hour-long segment interview with the author. And now I'm curious about how the last two episodes of the series will present the story author Rebecca Godfrey chose to tell in the latter part of her book... Certain part of those stories (especially knowing they truly happened) really gave me some strong emotions… Her writing succeeded in immersing readers in the situation at the time, evoking empathy from readers for both the teenagers and adults involved in the case.

Looking back on Rebecca in the series after listening to the author’s interview, I feel that the character is pretty true to the actual Rebecca. Obviously it’s not a 1:1 replica, but the show captured the essence of the author- I think the portrayal of this character Rebecca did a good job explaining some of the reasons behind the author Rebecca's choice to tell this story (not quite as dramatic for sure), especially the thoughts going into why she decided to approach the case in this particular angle: tell the stories of the kids involved in this cruel and complex case from their perspective and then following onward in this way. Along with the added dramatic artistic decisions, it makes me appreciate even more turning the original author into one of the story's characters and combines it with the author's own experiences to tell the story. Like I said before, if the case of Reena Virk itself is the show’s main focus, then Rebecca and Cam are like the messy adults these kids might turn into in ten years if their issues are left unaddressed properly... The author wanted to convey the complexity of this true case- to tell the stories of teenagers involved in the event whose emotions are often times overlooked and ignored, while also trying to expose the injustice in the justice system. I think adding Cam and Rebecca into the show definitely hone down on these points and made the storytelling more compelling.

I saw that Rebecca Godfrey is also listed as one of the executive producers of the series. Reading that Emmy magazine interview, knowing that she also looked forward to and participated in the preparation of the series, but unfortunately, passed away before the official shooting began, what a commemoration then to see Rebecca Godfrey, in her own image, incorporated and preserved her real life connections to the case and the people involved in the case on the show. She chose to tell this story, and now she is forever linked to it.

Why is Maya Bishop always the ONLY one apologizing to EVERYONE?! They can even acknowledge that Maya always being there for them even when they weren’t, yet, they don’t need to apologize to contributing to Maya’s mental breakdown and then not caring to check on her when she needs her so called family. I am so tired of watching this stupid plot… And I am even more tired to keep sounding like a broken clock. At this point, I’d be okay not seeing anyone apologize to Maya. I just can’t keep seeing her being the only person who apologizes like the others have done absolutely no wrong and Maya’s the only evil person in that whole storyline. 🙏🏼

I am begging the writers to LET THIS GO if all they can think of is to have Maya apologize AGAIN AND AGAIN, only to have the team repeat their habit of ignoring their so called families when they are going through tough mental health crisis (this time’s Vic).
