"Why did Via do (blah blah) here?" Because she was in shock. Emotional shock.
Emotional shock (or psychological shock) is the brains response to a sudden, highly distressing event. Like say, seeing your dad about to get his head chopped off, And just like someone in emotional shock, she went through fight, flight, and freeze. All three of them.
Fight: Your body responds by facing the perceived threat aggressively. It prepares you to push back, defend yourself, or confront the situation directly.
Flight: Your instinct urges you to run away or escape danger. You may feel a restless urge to flee, move quickly, or completely avoid the trigger.
Freeze: Your body physically locks up or becomes temporarily unresponsive. Instead of fighting or fleeing, you might feel stuck, disconnected, or unable to act.
She went though fight when she was running to try and save Stolas.
She went through freeze both when Stella blocked her path and when stella hugged her.
And for a second she went into flight when she stepped back when Stella moved in for the hug.
Via didn't react to Stella until she started crying because thats when she stopped being in shock.
People see her moving away when Stella goes in for a hug as a sign that Via is uncomfortable around her. I raise the idea that Via didn't even see Stella here. Like she was so checked out that her brain was barely registering visual stimuli. Via responsed to Stella the same way she would a wall that suddenly popped up. And how am I sure of this? Because besides flight kicking in for a second Via doesn't react to Stella at all at first. She has that same look where she's basically staring forward at nothing from when Stella blocks her path to when Stella holds her. Her thoughts are probably the biological equivalent to TV static. It's only when Via starts crying, in other words when she stops being in shock, that she reacted to Stella and hugged her.
That right there? That more then anything shows, that Via wasn't reacting like this as an abuse response due to Stella, but only because of the shock, that shows how much Via might trust Stella regardless of how Stella had been acting up till this point. How much she feels safe with Stella. Via quickly snapped out of it when Stella hugged her. That could only happen if Via's brain decided it was in a safe enough situation to stop being in shock. Now yes, obviously this had to go really quickly for the sake of the narrative but the underlying point of "Via feels safe (not necessarily that she IS safe) with Stella" is still there.
