Breaking the wall for all its predecessors, Facebook created a platform and phenomena for anyone, anywhere of any age, race, belief and culture to connect via social media. It starts with content, transmitted by users through their legitimate means and it gets shared from friends to their friends in an archiving process that creates the public library we now know as timeline. Distinguishing from CompuServe, SixDegrees and LinkedIn, Facebook roots at the university level owing its success to its targeted audience and the infamous “Like” button. Arguable the biggest platform the internet has to offer, Facebook reflects on the value that mass media offers to society, connection. Anonymity was dispelled and as the modern day passes, we could observe a structure of the communication model neatly unfold where users themselves become active senders and receivers.

At first, Facebook was reluctant to commercialize itself by selling spots to businesses and advertisers. By the third month of thefacebook.com, it succumbed to the first wave of advertising. As primitive as the ads were, PartyPoker and the NYC Summer Jewish Camp began at the sidelines, separated from the user generated content. Now, ads are included in timelines and business have their own profile website for users to follow for sales or product release.

Racking up millions was only a matter of time for Zuckerberg. As Facebook opens it doors to capitalism, it went from a whopping 382 thousand to billions at the year 2012 all beginning with MasterCard. Structuring itself to profit, Facebook developed a three step process beginning with building a page, connecting and engaging with audience. Unlike TV or radio which thrives in modern day through specialization, Facebook promotes various categories unlimited by type.

Boundaries of stratification and discrimination are not broken but made invisible through Facebook. Emergence of cyberbullying has became prominent but so has cross cultural friendship. Shame and insult slipped through the bridge that connect society. However, we view the interaction potential provide by social media to be an important advancement and internet slander a minor drawback that can be mended through time.

In conclusion, social media has become a driving force for businesses, advertisers and communicators to start or maintain their prominence. Championing this revolution is Facebook and now new comers Twitter and Instagram, example of specialized versions of social media expand the horizon to the technological transcendence we call the digital era.
