Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang family, but he refers to Jiang Fengmian as “uncle” and Madam Yu by her title. Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang, but he refers to neither Jiang sibling as his siblings, only going so far as to call Jiang Yanli his “shijie” and refer to Jiang Cbeng only by name. Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang, but he keeps his original surname (which had to be told to him because street-kid A-Ying only remembered his baby name prior to being found by Jiang Fengmian), is not written into the family records, and only names Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze as his parents across both lives. Wei Wuxian was “adopted” by the Jiang, but nobody treats him like an heir and Jin Zixuan directly says that he should marry Jiang Yanli (insultingly) to become the heir if he likes her so much.
Schrodinger’s adoption: where a person is totally a part of the family except absolutely no one in said family acknowledges that this “family tie” exists, not the “adopters” and certainly not the “adoptee.”
Bonus: Jiang Fengmian treated Wei Wuxian so much better than Jiang Cheng, but he only really expresses concern over his own children’s well-beings and future while allowing Wei Wuxian to mostly do whatever. Jiang Fengmian treated Wei Wuxian so much better than Jiang Cheng, but he allowed his wife to whip and punish Wei Wuxian excessively without a word otherwise, something she does not do to her own children.

Some misconceptions on WWXs flute...
Chenqing was just a normal dizi. Yes, it had a reputation, but at the end of the day it was simply a flute with a tragic backstory. It was not made of bamboo as others have claimed in recent posts. That's his second flute he made after coming back to life. Chenqing is described as being made of dark wood - alluding to it being made from a tree in the burial mounds - which are black.
It's not a vessel to channel anything, it's a tool WWX uses to calm his mind and therefore the ghosts he is controlling, that's all. WWX uses empathy to harness his cultivation method, he and others can do this without Chenqing or any instrument at all.
But yes, it is funny that this simple, ordinary dizi is thought to possess some unspeakable magic powers and has an infamous reputation for unjustly killing thousands. When in fact, it was an ordinary instrument that aided WWX in helping the dead use up their resentment and move on while fighting in a war, saving innocent people post-war and defending himself against attacks.
All the while, being a toddler's teething toy and a fidget spinner for WWX as well.
“Wei Wuxian did so much for Jiang Cheng in life” ≠ “Wei Wuxian loved Jiang Cheng so much”
Those are two separate sentences relating to two separate ideas. They are not synonymous with each other nor mutually exclusive, given how only the former is true to the story.
“Wei Wuxian did so much for Jiang Cheng in life therefore he loved Jiang Cheng so much” is false causation.
Wei Wuxian is not a character shown to only go above and beyond because a situation involves a “loved one.” Wei Wuxian did so much for Mianmian despite only ever talking to her because he wanted to get her medicine pouch for his crush. Wei Wuxian did so much for Wen Ning despite not even remembering who he was during their previous encounter. Wei Wuxian did so much for the older cultivators during the second siege despite most of them admitting to having participated in the first siege that killed him and his charges. Sometimes, doing things for others at risk to yourself can mean love. Most of the time, it does not.
hi, ive been reading your jc takes and i found i p much agree with everything, but i wanted to ask, how do you square the moment jc sacrifices himself for wwx by distracting the wen guards with... everything else he does
also the moment he brings wwx his flute, if he only feels hate for wwx why would he do that?
As I’ve said, Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian were friends, and I 100% believe that the fall of Lotus Pier and the emergence of the Sunshot Campaign is why they remained friends for so long, especially in the direct aftermath of the fall which saw Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian having to rely solely on each other for survival. So I believe without a doubt that Jiang Cheng distracted the Wen cultivators to protect Wei Wuxian… without considering the full consequences of getting caught. I believe that had Jiang Cheng considered losing his golden core a real possibility, he would not have used himself as a distraction. But he did use himself as a distraction, and he did lose his golden core, and despite the fact that Wei Wuxian rectified that with his “miracle connections,” he spends close to twenty years taking that out on Wei Wuxian, lest we forget that upon waking after being rescued, he tries to go for Wei Wuxian’s throat again.
As for Jiang Cheng returning Chenqing, it’s a symbol of the one moment of character growth he has in the entire novel: fully letting Wei Wuxian go. Jiang Cheng held onto that flute because he just “knew” that if Wei Wuxian came back to life, he would immediately search for his most fearsome weapon, because Wei Wuxian “must” be a showoff obsessed with power (because Jiang Cheng would be, in his position). He was keeping it in hopes of successfully luring Wei Wuxian in for a slaughter. But what he failed to realize before and finally understood at the end was that Wei Wuxian never was and never would be like Jiang Cheng. He did not seek power or fame or vengeance over perma-grudges; he didn’t need Chenqing. So Jiang Cheng gives it back, thereby thematically releasing his last standing preconceived notions on his former shixiong and his need to hunt him down in a one-sided competition. (Now if only he’d done the same for Wen Ning… 😒)
Your CEO Lan Wangji is gorgeous!! Now we need the genius new employee sweeping Gege off his feet!

"Jiang Cheng should have been allowed informed consent".
He did. As in he was informed he'd receive a core regardless and accepted. Also his issue was never about the harm it would cause to Wei Wuxian or the loss it would be for Wei Wuxian. It was compounded that he did owe grace to Wei Wuxian for what he had done for Jiang Cheng. Let's also stop omitting that Jiang Cheng was set on committing suicide by starving himself because he could no longer cultivate in direct contrast to Wei Wuxian reasoning that he was simply giving back what he had been given by the Jiang Clan anyways by giving his core that was developed with their methods.
The only reason he is upset about anything to do with that situation is that once again he did and always had relied on what Wei Wuxian said and did for him while constantly calling Wei Wuxian ungrateful.
I feel like there is something very sentimental in the way that Wei Wuxian doesn't have anything material kept of his loved ones that he had lost during his life, aside from the tree that he associated with Jiang Yanli. And he keeps that closest to his heart as the most significant point of kindness he ever received and her not looking for him out of any sense of duty herself or for anyone else's sake.
She endeared herself to him out of her own kindness, which is what he idolizes in other people. Very few people in his life willingly reach to stand with or fall with him. The only other one that had was Lan Wangji who is framed in that same instance of the tree rendition where Jiang Yanli once had stood.
He doesn't tell anyone about this, even Lan Wangji, what had transpired when he was a child with Jiang Yanli, but I think it speaks all on its own how he associates those two specifically with safety to finally be as he is without apology or further expectations to be more or less than what he is and be loved for that.
