A man is sad because his 14 year old dog is dying. He grew up with the dog. It means the world to him. The dog's in pain, has to be put down. The man begs god "Please, take me instead." God takes him instead. The dog is cured and the man drops dead in the veterinary lobby. The dog doesnt notice. Before the man passes on to the consolatory rest of nonexistence, God allows the man to see his dog from the other side, to see what the dog is thinking. The dogs not thinking anything. He's dumb as shit, his tongue is hanging out of his mouth. He doesnt feel any gratitude because dogs cant feel gratitude, which comes as a shock to the man. He was pretty sure his dog had expressed gratitude to him all the time, but thanks to being in the presence of god he knew with certainty that it wasnt true. That was the last thing the man thought, or was. The dog died a year later, because he was very old.
