“Indeed, these markings are strange” droned some doctor.
Wildberry was never the type of cookie to easily catch an illness, much less see any type of medic. He attempted to keep his physical form as healthy as possible year-round, but even a healthy habit couldn’t help the fact that he was now seated, no armor on the top part of his body, being poked and prodded by at least three doctors.
“Very strange, indeed” cawed a nurse. “And these appeared when?”
“Yesterday morning.” Wildberry murmured.
Of course, Wildberry felt normal, perfectly fit to aid Queen Hollyberry. But when Jungleberry Cookie entered his chambers at the most inconvenient moment, she sent him to the infirmary in an instant.
“And you feel fine physically, right?”
“Yes.”
He looked down at his arm, which felt naked without the guise of his gauntlet. There, lay intricate patterns of fresh birthmarks and scarring, painted in the shape of feathers. On his chest, a large vulture, with its talons resting on the arm of a delicate cookie.
Another nurse tapped a feather, sending a buzz through Wildberry’s body.
“I believe this anomaly is beyond our expertise,” she stated. “Is there anywhere else we can send him?”
“Not within the kingdom,” the doctor grunted. “Having him leave the kingdom is too great of a risk-not only to our fellow cookies, but to Queen Mother as well.”
“So what should we do?”
The doctor poked Wildberry’s chest, sending another buzz. “His vitals are stable, yes?”
“Nothing out of the ordinary with him.”
“Very well,” the doctor sighed. “I suppose bed rest would be the best thing for now. After all, we are still unsure if this is contagious-“
“Does the patient get a say?” Wildberry interjected.
“No.” The three doctors huffed in response.
_______
Wildberry stared at the ceiling of his bedroom, pretty much the only way to entertain himself through the doctor-ordered “medicine.” He’d figure he could push through it by napping-usually as soon as his head would hit the pillow, he’d be out-but here he was, in the middle of the night, fully awake. Occasionally, some knight-well, one of the few the Hollyberry kingdom had left-would poke their head in to check on “the patient.” Sadly, these cookies weren’t much company, only staying long enough for a glance at his chest and the occasional “are you alright?”
It was pitch black. He had no clue what time it was or how long he had been awake, but he could hear the murmur of the guards and someone else arguing. Faint it was, but the voices were audible, at least some bits and pieces.
“Qu…Mo…quar…”
“Let me in.”
The door swung open, and a familiar face sat on the edge of his bed.
“You feel alright?” She questioned.
He didn’t move. Why should I, he thought. It’s not like I could move anywhere outside of this room.
“You know, taking off that armor may help with the bed rest.”
“At midnight? Get a hold of yourself.” She teased, slightly bumping his shoulder. “You miss patrol that bad?”
“Not that I miss it,” he states. “Just that I have nothing to fill its void.”
“You’ve always been dedicated. And stubborn.”
“I get that a lot.”
She chuckled, one that booms enough to slash the silence of a clear night. A small smirk wriggled onto Wildberry’s face.
“Well, I won’t leave you awake too long. I just came to give you this.”
In her hands she held a tattered envelope-one that was clearly weathered by a frigid, unforgiving wind.
“It’s not often he replies this quick,” Wildberry inquired. “Any word from Dark Cacao recently?”
“He’s back to his rhythm: his kingdom is as prosperous as ever! Although, he is still adding names to the altar. I’m afraid he may run out of space soon!” She replied, her face falling slightly.
“You should go to bed, Queen Mother. It’s late.”
“I know, I know. But one more glass of berry juice sounds better!”
Wildberry sighed once again: this time, a sigh with a slight tinge of relief. Finally, some normalcy.
“Remember your stopping point, Queen Mother. The guards wouldn’t like it if I snuck out to check on your condition.”
The pink adorned queen laughed once again, rising to leave.
“Don’t worry, Nagging-berry Cookie! I’ll behave myself. Wouldn’t want Jungleberry Cookie having another sick cookie to worry about, would we?”
“No, I suppose not. Rest well, Queen Hollyberry.”
“You do the same, Wildberry.”
The heavy door closed audibly behind her, allowing him to get a brief look outside. Everything was the exact same, yes, but it’s a change of scenery nonetheless. He looked down at the envelope in his hands, and gently ripped the seal.
______
“How long does it take for a mortal to notice your signs?” boomed a shrouded figure.
“Not long, usually,” another voice bellows. “Although I am more involved with my worshipers.”
“Very funny, Stormbringer Cookie.”
“Oh, come on! I’m not wrong!”
“This isn’t about morality,” the shrouded one grunted. “This is a situation that could change the matters of Earthbread itself.”
“And why does it have to be that cookie?”
“If i’m to choose a vessel, I should at least be able to pick one I like, yes?”
“I guess,” Stormbringer sighed, gazing down at an altar.
“Do you usually make pilgrimages?” the shrouded one asked?
“Not often. I usually just send a sign and they understand. But in your case, maybe adopting a physical form would be for the best?”
“How so?”
“He could experience your energy head-on. Perhaps, it may be what they consider…eye opening.”
“I suppose it’s worth a try, then. Thank you for your assistance.”
“It’s whatever. But what do you see in this kid anyway?”
“You’ll see soon, Stormbringer Cookie.”
A small mushroom appears, and the shrouded one vanishes into it.
okay so think of just a man from epic odysseus’ and antinous’ versions put together like this:
beginning verse and chorus - odysseus
beginning verse and chorus - antinous
together until the end like in antinous’ version to give more context
okay but think about Wildberry as Odysseus and Smoked Cheese as Antinous, but the roles change at the “when” as Smoked Cheese works for Golden Cheese’s forgiveness and Wildberry begs Hollyberry cookie to let him be there for her
It has been a while since my last letter. I apologize, I haven’t had much time to write. Only recently, Queen Mother hosted our first ball since our return, one celebrating our victorious battle. She’s never been one to postpone an excuse to indulge, but I suppose she found a reason to this time: after we defeated Dark Enchantress, many duties were left unattended to in our leave. Even with the added protections, there was still massive destruction throughout the grand kingdom. Of course, above all else, there were funerals to host.
During one of these funerals, I found myself grappling with my own mortality. You see, alongside you on the battlefield isn’t the first time I have crumbled: many times I have risked this dough for my great kingdom. I have been blessed enough to be healed and live to write you another letter, but something has stuck with me. Lying there, under Dark Enchantress’ foot, I felt something growing within me, almost like a spore. It, oddly, didn’t feel unnatural whatsoever, rather comforting, in a way. As if this moment could get any stranger, there was a voice calling for me, one I did not recognize. All I could remember hearing was my own name before Sugar Swan called for our revival.
Conflicting, it was: I have found myself on the brink of death many times, yet only this once, I was comfortable in its grasp. I felt that icy hand, gripping against my soul, and just this once, I did not wriggle-I simply allowed it to chill me to the bone. Forgive me, for droning on about what I can only describe as an apotheosis-I hope I control my manners better in my other letters, but I suppose that would be up to your interpretation.
