In November 2015, it was a huge upset when Director Jang Jae-Hyun’s debut film The Priests 검은 사제들 (2015) received both commercial and critical success with a rare story to the Korean cinema : Occultism and Exorcism.

Exorcism is very common in Western cinema, but Korean cinema had never dealt with it successfully. Dir. Jang’s approach was praised by Korean critics for localizing the unfamiliar genre as naturally as possible.
From then on, a Catholic priest with a young and handsome look has become a “trend” in Korean movies and dramas. Many movie/drama companies started a project which copies the success of The Priests 검은 사제들 (2015), The Wailing 곡성 (2016) and Train to Busan 부산행 (2016). That’s the reason why there are so many occult or zombie movies/dramas in 2018 and 2019. The priests (2015) was the starting point of them all.
Svaha: The Sixth Finger 사바하 娑婆訶 (2019) is Dir. Jang Jae-Hyun’s comeback to the big screen in 4 years. It is a a mystery thriller where Reverend Park (played by Lee Jung-jae), who runs a research institute of religious affairs and pseudo-religion issues, engages in unbelievable surreal events while investigating a Buddhist cult called “Deer garden”.
Lee Jung-jae 이정재 played Reverend Park, a snobbish investigator of the Buddhist cult whose purpose is to expose a newly-risen fake religion. But he has a secret desire to ascertain a real one. Park Jung-Min 박정민 played Nahan 나한 羅漢, a cult leader who is holding the key to the case.
The title - Svaha 사바하 娑婆訶 - is a Buddhist mantra in Sanskrit language, meaning “Amen (So be it)”.
The director said that this movie is about the Four Devas 사천왕 四天王 who were the kings of evil spirits in ancient Indian mythology but turned to Buddhism and became heavenly guardians to protect Buddha. he also said it is really complicated to unfold the Buddhist concept of the world in a cinematic way because so much information should be explained within a limited amount of time.
Many Korean netizens are joking that Savha will be connected to The Priests like Marvel cinematic universe movies do. The young Catholic priest meets the snobbish pastor and the Buddhist cult leader to save the world from evil spirits….. Why not? (LOL)
