Last night, we screened 3 episodes of @cantstopshow at Union Hall and had a comedy show in between. 1 episode, 2 comics. 1 episode, 2 comics... etc. It was unlike anything I’ve ever done before and I’m looking forward to doing it again in the future!! Here’s some random asides..

First, I was late to my own event. I’m the worst. I suck more than the 1 train during rush hour, even. I’m never going to be late for anything ever again. Ever. Shout out to Mike, Alex, Jake and Shannon for holding it down at Union Hall.

Second, Justin Hartough is the real MVP. If he didn’t have his computer and a feel for how I work, we wouldn’t have pulled this off. 

Third, the comedy community in NYC can be dope as fuck and some of you industry mofos are cool as hell. LETS WORK.

Okay, so I posted about the screening everyday for 2 weeks straight. I knew it would annoy people, but then I didn’t care. I needed to sell tickets. I wanted people to come to the show. And posting that much is almost as bad as the 2 train. Add in that I took out 2 Facebook ads (which never really work, but fuck it) and you got Facebook flooding. And you know what? I have no regrets. If you didn’t come to the show, it wasn’t because you didn’t know about it. EVERYBODY knew about that shit. 

It exceeded my expectations. I’ve never done a screening and that shit is scary, ESPECIALLY with comedy. With drama or action, people can just watch some bullshit silently for however-long, and clap when it’s over. Everyone wins. With comedy, if there’s no laughs-- your show is BOMBING. HARD. It’s wack, give it up, b! Now, I knew *I* thought the series was funny, but hearing a room full of people laugh at bits gave me a new insight. Maybe next time we’ll screen, then do re-edits or addition. YEAH! And maybe next time, we’ll have a budget to actually do something! Who knows?!

Everyone on the show murdered, btw. It was a real audience of mixed people. A great barometer for how’d you fare at clubs (anywhere in diverse city) and I’m lucky to work with all these people.

Check out Mike Brown’s “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop”: Smart, Funny Web Series Comedy Out Of NYC

Mike Brown has spent a minute or two in the Bay Area, a Sketchfest alumnus and associate of Jabari Davis. In that time I became a fast fan of his style, his substance, his wry, yet inviting humor with underlining consciousness. Clever, fun, poised: he’s funny in the ways you want, in a way you didn’t know you wanted. 

Over the years I’ve looked forward to Mike’s output, onstage and off, including but not limited to, his comedy outfit Decepticomics, his podcast Comedy Outliers and acting in the web series Clench and Release. Brown’s latest project Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop gives a snapshot of his New York, a socially cumbersome environment for somebody who wants no problems. As passive as Mike tries to be to get along, there’s always conflict around the corner. 

Premiere episode, “The List” presents a uniquely Black worry: what happens when you give a white friend a pass and the hall monitors show up? Well… let’s just say Mike’s character Sean handles it the best he could. If the debut is indicative of the whole, you can expect shrewd angles on slice-of-life NYC, madcap characters, quick, clever writing—"that’s the most racist face I’ve ever seen!“—slick production and a whole lot of back peddling (in that characteristically affable Mike Brown way).
