It’s weird. Way back in the day (like, pre-Voltron Legendary Defender era) the relationship between two unrelated fictional guys being considered “brotherly” would have been quite validating to us slash shippers. It’s like, oh wow, they’re that close, huh. They already consider themselves each other’s family. They’d die for each other. We’d have thought a romantic relationship stemming from that was perfectly logical!

And it’s not like the ship would ever be canon, so having that sort of deep bond was the next best thing. The fanworks would just have to take it from there.

But it’s so different these days. A character says “you’re like a brother to me” and now shipping two unrelated fictional guys is literally incest? Even though this has been a trope in straight romances for forever? Wow, the view has really shifted! Of course, shippers back in the day were much looser regarding canon roles, ages, power dynamics, or hell, even whether or not two characters existed in the same universe in the first place! But this is one argument I’ve just never been a fan of. Like, I used to say my first gf was my sister all the damn time because I didn’t know how else to interpret my feeings for her early on. And the fact that this seems to disproportionately affect m/m ships and f/f ships is telling, too. Also, people’s views of each other can...change? Sure, maybe Character A once saw Character B as his brother, but something is different now, and so he has to go and navigate those feelings. I mean the whole point of fanworks is exploration. For the characters as well as the writer. And just like back in the day, the ships are rarely canonized, which means something is always being changed or expanded. We just didn't have killjoys in our ears telling us we couldn’t ship two unrelated fictional guys because one of them once referred to the other as a brother or whatever. Well, we did, cause homophobes exist, we just didn’t usually hear it from fellow shippers.

Lotor and Keith: The Duo We Deserved

Disclaimer: it's been around 8 months since I've last watched voltron. details may be inaccurate

Sometimes I think we were robbed of what could've been an amazing friendship. Keith's discovery of his Galran lineage and Lotor's of his Altean heritage, and their indirect parallel of upbringing, I hoped these two would form an amazing bond as they're the only people that could relate to each other in terms of ostracization due to their race. But that hope eventually dwindled down when I realized that the showrunners were definitely not planning that, and in fact, even makes Lotor a bad guy again. At the very least, I had hoped for a heart-to-heart conversation about them being mixed race and flesh out that aspect of them more. Yet again, I was let down. During Keith's entire life, he has been ostracized by his peers and constantly bullied for being different. It has been the fundamental characteristic of him— his preordained Galran traits— embedded into every crevice of his disposition and being unable to do anything about it. When he finds out about his Galran heritage, we finally conclude the reason, in profound realization, why he's never fit in much back in Earth. Ultimately, this would give clarity and closure to Keith about why he's the way he is, but what the showrunners overlooked is the inevitable, imminent consequence of an identity crisis. He's too galra to be human (antisocial, rebellious, fierce and stubborn), but too human to be galra. (compassionate, warm, weaker and smaller in stature, humanly physical features)

This is his reality everyday. I distinctly remember Sendak belittling Krolia because of her half-breed son, Keith. It went something along the lines of: "Is the Blade of Marmora so low on soldiers that they recruit a half-breed and his mommy in?" Which, most likely, amplified his identity crisis. Poor guy. I feel as though the same case could be applied to Lotor. Raised by only Galrans and raised to be one, his father, Zarkon, would also say that something was quite fundamentally different about him. Compared to a stereotypical, standard Galra, he seemed to be quite more compassionate and carefree as a child, showing great intellect and promise in other aspects yet lacking in the personality traits as a Galra and embracing more of his Altean characteristics. Growing up, Lotor always believed in goodwill, altruism, and attempted to prove to Zarkon that he could successfully subjugate planets by sheer goodwill without repercussions. However, his father's constant abuse for millennia, and cruelly destroying said planet, would of course, send him to spirals and awaken his long repressed Galran characteristics: Tyrannous, vindictive, cruel and spiteful. Both Keith and Lotor had been abandoned by their biological parents, one in a literal way, and the other, emotionally. Both of them had something just fundamentally, unutterably different about them that they couldn't quite explain, thus thwarting the standards of "what they should be". If Keith and Lotor had formed a genuine, wholesome familial friendship to replace their absent/abusive parents, they could've established an actual safe space where they felt belonged and heard. The rest of the team may also provide an emotional connection towards them, however, nobody knows their pain more than each other. After all, they both went through similar experiences. Mixed race solidarity! Also. I think it could've been a great way to represent mixed race people (I'm sorry. Is that how you call them? Is this offensive?). I'm not one myself, so I'm not sure, but this would've been so great to promote inclusivity and accurately represent their struggles in the actual world. This also could've been an amazing plot point for Lotor's character development and fleshing out his character more onto a much more profound and raw level. Instead, they threw it all down the drain by betraying VOLTRON then dying. Disappointed. Also, I'll be diving deeper into Keith's identity crisis more in one of my next posts, and Lotor's tragic fate. Get me out of this VOLTRON hellhole. The hyperfixation is too much.

Well Nico is a depressed malnourished teenager at the end of hoo however if we take him once he’s healed and strong can you imagine! He’s so powerful when he’s weak imaging what he can do when he’s healthy and had more practice!

Oh I know Nico's powerful. I just happen to reckon that Keith might just knock the kid out with an accurate hit to the nape with his assassin skill before Nico could try anything. Also he wouldn't stay still waiting for Nico to summon his skeleton soldiers. And unlike Nico's shadow traveling which takes up a lot of energy, Keith surely wouldn't pass out after just one sneaky attack. And if we're talking about swordsmanship Keith would be more than fine.

Sheith 17K Challenge

Throwing this out there: we are 107 away from having 17K fanworks in the Sheith tag on AO3. I think it can be done by the end of the year, between Sheith Secret Santa and the general outpouring that happens for December 14.

Funny thing with the Japanese version is that it’s used “Aishiteru”  or “愛してる”, the version of “I love you” exclusively for romantic love, not familiar.  If this was familial love, Keith would have used “Suki da yo” or “好だよ” or used  “Daisuki da” or “大好だ” If he were to say it was familiar love.

Either way, what’s most important, romantic or not, Keith loves Shiro and the sheer fact that Shiro reacts to the words “I love you” specifically shows that he returns the feelings.

Also in Spanish!!! “Te quiero” is more for like a love interest. The literal translation of “I love you” in English to Spanish is “Te amo” why didn’t just use that?? 😂 for family we use more “Te amo” to family & “Te quiero” to someone your interested in

Anw jk. Or maybe not. Ngl I'm pretty enthusiastic about Sheith, just that I don't think it's a good idea for them to end up with each other with everything that had transpired.

Why, you ask? Well, there's your iconic "You're my brother". The fact that DW put that line in there has perfectly hindered every potential of them together in a romantic sense. (Without that, however-----)

Tbh I feel like DW actively meant it to break the ship before it has a chance to flourish lmao, bc it's clear that the Western fandom would take everything as offensive as long as they dislike it. Not me though. I'm in this hole and I refuse to leave.

As for Acxa, I'm personally quite fond of her ngl. The rest I've mentioned in the post I believe?

All in all, obviously the safest choice would be to leave Keith as Keith and just forgo the romantic facets altogether (IN CANON) - which I'm so, so glad DW chose to go with.
