This is why it’s important that Yuuri lets Victor go at the end of YOI

YOI is a story about coming to understand what love means.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that there’s been a side-plot about a relationship in all of the Free Skate episodes, and that theme is illustrated through Yuuri’s competitors.

In the first FS episode, we have Minami’s infatuation with Yuuri. It’s innocent in nature, and he uses it to inspire himself to work harder.

But it’s infatuation nonetheless, and it’s not a real form of love.

This is a mirror of how Yuuri once saw Victor. As his idol. As someone he wanted to face as a competitor one day. (Note the similar text on those two screencaps.)

Again, it’s an innocent infatuation, but it’s important to note that while Yuuri might have loved the idea of Victor, he was not in love with Victor when he was just a poster on a wall. Yuuri didn’t know the real person yet.

Real love can’t blossom under these circumstances unless the relationship is taken to a deeper level.
