Any AUs where the sun warriors come into play, or where they interact with the fire nation?
Oh look, a chance to resurrect my Maiko Sun Warriors AU, AKA the one where Zuko has three mommies. Continued from: [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], and [Link].
1. Zuko's first meeting with Ursa is desperately awkward. He's dressed as a proper apprentice priest and shaman, with crisp, freshly painted cheek points and freshly tied and folded sash belt, the way he would if he were about to officiate an important ceremony, and this woman who is his mother is wearing heavy robes with voluminous sleeves, and no face paint at all. It'd hard not to stare at her. She seems so strange, as strange as he does to her. Because nothing prepared Ursa for seeing her son again, fourteen and so alien.
2. Iroh wants Zuko to leave with him and be his heir. He wants to remake Zuko into a Fire Nation prince. He doesn't want Zuko, he wants what Zuko could have been in another life. Ursa wants none of that. She wants to know the child she was forced to give up to save his life. She has spent every day trying to picture what he might be like, trying not to fear that he might have died, or been hurt or sick, far from her and what comfort she longs to provide. When Iroh wrote to her, he remarked on what a stroke of luck it was that he looked so much like his father and grandfather, that no one would doubt his heritage. But Ursa doesn't care. She isn't looking for a Firelord in his face.
3. So what she sees first is the scar, the proof that he was hurt far from her, that if not her greatest fear, than some of her fears were realized.
4. He tells her about what happened with Ran, and why he's in training to be a shaman. He talks easily about his mom and dad and little brother, about wandering the jungle, and about Ran deciding to join him, and being big and enthusiastic and scaring off all the birds and flying squirrel-mice. And Ursa's heart squeezes tight, because it hurts, and she wants to hear more.
5. That night, Iroh wakes up with a knife to his throat. What little light comes in from the ship's window shows the silhouette of a skinny long haired girl. When she talks, her voice is dry and scratchy, like she's trying to sound older than she is. She kneels over him. "You leave Zuko alone," she rasps. He smiles at her genially, as if they were meeting over morning tea, not as if it were the middle of the night with knives involved. "You must be Mai!" Her eyes glint in the dark. "I mean it," she says. "Leave him alone. You don't mean him anything good."
