Sat down to write one last poem about us & realized I lost the words to mean forgiveness a year ago. This love was big, but in the end it was just target practice. Sorry I couldn’t keep the rain away this year. I don’t know that I would have even if I could. California is starting to glow again. I don’t think it has anything to do with you this time. I’ve still never seen the ocean in person so maybe I’ll always hold a grudge for the way you took advantage of it. Sorry it takes 18 hours just to get from here to there. Sorry neither of us thought it would be worth the drive. I hope the years keep growing for you. I hope I never have to get the phone call about how you can’t make it through the night again. I hope neither of us have to figure out how to dig our way out of the dark again. That the years keep getting lighter from here on out. I hope you finally got the blue out of you hair. Sorry for the way I damaged it. Go ahead: take a shot for me. Better from the bottle than from the gun. So here’s to California. Here’s to a book you never got to read. Here’s to the fish falling back into the water. Here’s to my pink skies lined with birds again. Here’s to the dead roses. Here’s to throwing them out & planting new ones. Here’s to needing you a little less. Here’s to you. Here’s to me. Here’s to a year where the silence doesn’t hurt anymore.
