The Shadowman and Simon's Elbow -- Time in Iron Lung is Complex

When we get our first appearance of the Shadowman after Simon gets dropped back into the ocean after his chat with Ava, there is a little surprise hidden in the scene. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, yet.

The Shadowman--future Simon made out of blood and bad luck--slides to the side like Tom Cruise in Risky Business...

We cut back to Simon, then a shot of the depth meter going lower, but when return to the back of the sub, we get 13 frames of Simon's arm at timecode 25:42:

And it's not the Shadowman's elbow (arm?). It doesn't have all the caked on blood, tumors, and nastiness that he has. The clothing is dry and in pretty good shape in comparison. This shot is deliberately added, too. This isn't some editing or continuity mistake. Markiplier wanted us to see Simon witnessing both his current self, and his future self in the same area. It's hard to know what time that Simon comes from. There's just not enough information. It could be a vision of any of the times he goes to the back of the sub, honestly.

Regardless, there are probably lots of cool things to be gleaned from this. The most obvious is just that it is foreshadowing for Simon eventually becoming the Shadowman. I appreciate the details in this movie. You can see new things even just casually watching through your favorite scenes.

This expression is from someone who not only gets to freak out because somebody is in his one-man sub with him, but also because he's seen himself, too.

A case for Simon looking like Simon...with pictures!

I think I've seen more fuzzy, towering, shirtless Simon fanart than I ever expected to see. It maybe wouldn't catch my attention if we didn't get a shirtless scene in Iron Lung where it is very clear that he's grubby and injured, but definitely smooth-chested. This is because Markiplier isn't a fuzzy guy. He's also 5'10". It's a perfectly average height! But he's not super tall or anything.

So let me bless this website with great reference images of Markiplier from about 6 years ago.

At the time most of the following pictures were taken, he was working with a personal trainer and bulking, so this is Mark a little bit beefier than, say, his mashed potatoes and gravy bathtub video when he was muscular, but leaner. The mashed potato video is one of the fuzzier examples of Mark you can find. Here's a screenshot of that!

See? He's got a little chest fur here. And mashed potatoes! However, most of the time after this, he's smooth-chested. In contrast, fanart I've seen of Simon has him as actual bear of a guy. Like, they have hair even on his stomach in a lot of this art.

Yes, the following pictures are from [REDACTED]. Yes, Mark looks hot.

Artists, no shame to your headcanons if you still want to keep drawing fuzzy, enormous Simon, but I do have so many questions about why...

I don't think Simon becomes a tree at the end of Iron Lung. I think he's just fertilizer. I think he becomes the Shadowman. But look at Merman Mark up there! THIS is what we should headcanon as Simon's next form.

Simon on toned paper

I haven't drawn on paper at length in some time. I promise you, I tried to ctrl+z a mistake. But, yeah, I have this toned paper sketchbook that I haven't used very much at all. I should use it more. And portraits feel so much easier on paper for me in comparison to digital. I should really, really use my sketchbooks more. Paper feels more forgiving in comparison to digital as odd as that sounds. Well, the sketch at top left of the page is pretty weak, but that's okay. What isn't okay is how crap my camera is. The color of the paper just doesn't come through. It's somewhere in between the darkest photo you see here, and the lightest. Could not get it to show properly.

Eden as a death cult in the sense that they believe that death must be meaningful. If someone dies to feed others they are venerated and their entire body is used so as not to be wasteful of their sacrifice.That's why they send raid parties out to C.O.I ships, because those who die during those raids are granted a worthy death and thus allowed to Ascend to the next life. Simon stands out among his Brothers for his combat prowess because he's one of very few who dying isn't the goal for. On Filament Station that could very well mean Simon made a choice in favor of his own survival versus that of a worthy death. And his unwillingness to sacrifice himself is what resulted in both their loss at Filament Station AND their capture. Normally Edenites are NOT captured, they'll die first. Simon betrayed his "faith" in service of self preservation and then later relinquished self preservation to make a leap of faith.
