THIS RIPPED MY HEART OUT
do you ever get aggressively emotional because joyce byers is a single mom going through hell who doesn’t know whether she’ll ever get one of her sons back and yet she can still be so fucking maternal and warm and loving with a traumatized little girl she barely knows
K I need to talk about this bc this was an extremely important scene on a metacritical level–aside from being just nice and good as text.
Cuz I watch a lot of genre television, nearly exclusively. And like a lot of people, I am so goddamn tired of darkness and conflict because it makes for so called better drama. But I don’t think any of us who are tired of grimdark nihilism want television devoid of conflict, no matter how much we joke about wanting an episode where favorite woobie x just gets to have a cup of cocoa and relax.
This scene is the glorious epitome of that!!! It is conflict full, high stakes, suspenseful drama, with heart. And appreciation for the fact that you can’t just torture a character and expect them not to give up.
The characters don’t get spared insane and rigorous tests, because this is horror scifi and that’s what is supposed to happen. But writers and creators get to choose how they handle conflict. Relentless horror and debasement and even personal embarrassment can impart two impressions: that the creators don’t care about the characters or they don’t care about the audience.
These interactions between Joyce and Eleven provide a reprieve that both the characters and the audience need. You get the necessary acknowledgement that Eleven is an abused child, who needs help and tenderness. You give Joyce a moment to feel like a parent again, and to give help back to someone who is helping her. And most importantly, it’s a scene that give hope– to Joyce that her son might come back, to Eleven that she may not always be surrounded by adults that abuse her, and to the audience that the reality of the characters’ adversity is being treated seriously and won’t go on ad infinitum.
It’s an achievement, I’ll add, that Stranger Things managed to cram into a tiny 8 episode season and Game of Thrones couldn’t squeeze in until season 6 after much much fan complaining.
Darkness and horror without hope is just something I want to be totally done with. I don’t want it in my life anymore. It turns character struggle into pointlessness and watching television into a chore.
why do people feel so positive about Joyce in these scenes is my question. She’s still using and harming eleven for her own purposes, just also being “nice.” at the end of the day clearly anything Eleven went through would have been worth it for her to get Will back…and she did make the ultimate sacrifice and never got to be free of abuse. this is more of the same treatment Eleven received the whole series, it’s just from a woman this time. Instead of treating Eleven like a power tool she treated her like a dog.
When you smoke that good shit and then leave the house thinking nobody can tell
The sad reality is that 5 of Ethiopia’s 7 medals have been won by Oromo athletes, whose people back home are being slaughtered. Feyisa Lilesa showed his solidarity to his Oromo family knowing he risked being killed or imprisoned once he went back to Ethiopia. Never forget this man’s courage. Never.
