Cherokee Indian Bible
The 1860 Cherokee Bible, published by the American Bible Society, represents the first complete Bible translated into Cherokee. Efforts began in the early 1800s with translations by native Cherokees, culminating in this significant publication. Elias Boudinot played a crucial role, alongside other missionaries, in making this historical work possible.
LISTEN NOW (6 minute podcast):
PODCAST TRANSCRIPT:
Today on celebrate the Bible, weāll take a look at the first complete Bible translated into the Cherokee language.
I should mention that the photos had to be taken through glass, since I obtained this Cherokee Bible page from a museum, which was already matted and framed for display. So you might see reflections in the glass.
Also, if you are listening to this episode as a podcast, and would like to see these photos, you can do so by going to my WordPress site at celebratethebible250.com. If you donāt see the link to the story, just type āCherokeeā into the search box, and the result will come up.
This Cherokee Bible page on display today was printed in the year 1860 by the American Bible Society.
The American Bible Society was founded in the year 1816. By that time in America, over 130 Bible Societies had already been formed throughout 24 states. They didnāt have their own printing presses to print their own Bibles for distribution, so up until that time, they had to rely on the British and Foreign Bible Society to meet supply and demand.
They called for a unified organization with distribution, and the American Bible Society was formed, headquartered in New York City.
The first chairman was Elias Boudinot, a lawyer, statesman, and also a delegate to the Continental Congress. He also served as a Colonel in the Continental Army, and director of the United States Mint ⦠of which he was appointed by George Washington.
Work on the Cherokee New Testament began in the early 1800s. The first round of translations were done by native Cherokees. These translations were then compiled by several missionaries such as Sam Worcester and our fore-mentioned Elias Boudinot.
Worcester and Boudinot continued working, and published the book of Acts in 1833, and the Gospel of John in 1838.
In 1860, the american bible society published a complete Cherokee bible, after combining several other partial translations made by others.
I was fortunate to be able to obtain a page from the first edition, complete with this museum display still intact.
There is quite a history behind the many Bibles translated into regional dialects, beginning with the Eliot Bible translated into the Algonquin language, and the first Bible printed in the Americas.
I have an episode dedicated to the Eliot Bible, and I will have a link to this previous episode below.
Now, it is obvious that there were no already-existing lead type in the Cherokee language. Many years before the printing and publication of the American Bible Society version of this Bible, a Cherokee silversmith named Sequoyah developed the 85 characters, which represented the sound of the words.
The Cherokee Council, along with Sequoyah designed the initial letterforms.
The press letterforms were cast by Samuel Worcester, a member and publisher for the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. He also helped establish the first printing press in the Cherokee nation.
The first Cherokee newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix, was printed in 1828.
Also in the pre-ABS days, John Arch and David Brown, both of the Cherokee Nation, began the initial work of translating the New Testament during the 1820ās.
And, like many of my other episodes, the most detailed information is just a quick web search away, and I encourage you to explore that option to learn more about this fascinating Bible in American History.
So, until we meet again, and for celebratethebible250, this is Francis Douglas.

MTV
Funny Funny!! A collection of anime video clips
MUSIC MUSEUM
Are you tired of videos that just feature dancers or have the artist act cheesy? As promo videos become more varied, itās nice to see more videos that use animations and dolls. MTV is going crazy again tonight!
*The title says it all. The writers over at Newtype were excited about the animation displayed in the music videos on MTV in the 11/1985 issue of Newtype magazine. I really love their enthusiasm for animation and the different techniques used in the videos that were featured in the article*
John Fogarty - Vanz Kant Danz
Produced by Will Vinton Productions. The main character is a pig named āTUNESā. A 3D animation style with clay pigs and break dancer dolls moving frame by frame. The dancing pigs are really cute.
Dire Straits - Money for NothingĀ
Produced by Steve Baron, who has worked on famous promo videos such as āBillie Jean.ā I was surprised at the beauty of the CG animation overlaid on the live footage from Budapest, Hungary. The color scheme is excellent, not only in the square-like animation but also in the live scenes, where only the instruments are colored. It seems that we will see more of this kind of thing in the future.
Prince - Raspberry BeretĀ
The video director is Prince himself. It is a rather flashy video that combines live performance scenes, live action of the dancers around him, and animation. The images of peopleās faces and skies remind me of psychedelic illustrations from the 1960s.
a~ha - Take On MeĀ
Warner Pioneer This was also made by Steve Barron. The animation was done by Limelight Productions in the US. The strange footage of the membersā movements turning into animation seems to have been quite elaborate.
Goon Squad - Eight Arms to Hold You
The second single from Goonies (movie). Itās not an animation, but an elaborate piece that moves puppets one frame at a time, like the old monster movies. The punch line of him becoming a hero is also hilarious.
Motoharu Sano - New Age
Among Japanese artists, Motoharu Sano is the one who puts the most effort into making promotional videos. This one was made by Tim Pope, and features a robotically marching doll and a scene of Sano rapping alternating. Itās not particularly eccentric, but itās a memorable video.
The Alan Parsons Project - Donāt Answer Me
It was produced by D.J. Webster, who recently produced Jeff Beck & Rod Stewartās āPeople Get Ready.ā The animation was produced by Broadcast Arts in Washington. Itās a wave-like video thatās like an American comic thatās been animated, with a lot of hard-boiled touches. It shows a new direction for promotional videos.
Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Accidents Will Happen
The production is by female producer Annabel Jankel. The best anime and the painting itself is simple. But itās a radical movement with a touch of emotion to the song. Perfect for the page.
Cars - You might think
The first MTV Video Awards were held in May, this is one of F. Steinās masterpieces. The members of Cars suddenly turn into flies(?) and the skillful combination of live action and animation is eye-catching. The video is more popular than the song itself. Is this your masterpiece?
Go West - We Close Our Eyes
Godley & Creme (formerly of 10cc), a sought-after video director, made this epic film at a cost of $90,000.
-Another fun thing about MTV is the various animated jingles. There are a lot of great pieces of art that last just a few seconds.-Ā *(Link to MTV bumpers of the 1980ā²s. This is what Newtype was referring to as āanimated jinglesā in this part of the article.)
Newtype cassette labels featuring six popular seiyuu in the 11/1985 issue of Newtype. The seiyuu seen on the labels are Maria Kawamura, Takako Ota, Kayoko Fuji, Miki Takahashi, Noriko Hidaka and Yoko Obata.

The nighthawks special. Itās really one episode but thanks to Spotify taking editing away from users,I was forced to split it in two. Iām pretty sure nobody sees this. Happy Thanksgiving for the slaughter of millions of indigenous peoples over so many years time at the hands of the wandering pilgrim. Might as well give Hitler a holiday.
