I’ve seen a few people saying it’s hypocritical to allow white characters to be recast as black or another minority, but to get upset when a minority character is recast as a white person.

Lemme explain why that’s bullshit.

Representation in media is like cookies. Right now, white characters have more cookies than all the minority characters combined.

When a white character is recast with a minority actor, that’s a step toward evening out the distribution of cookies.

When a minority character is recast with a white actor, that’s taking a cookie from the already smaller pile the minority characters have.

So when a white person gets up in arms about minority actor being cast in a previously white role, they aren’t interested in fairness or tit for tat - they’re interested in making sure white characters still have the most cookies.

With as much as I will drag the emoji movie to the ground, none of my hatred or ill will goes towards the animators. They put in countless hours into creating this film and probably had little to no input on the storyline or script. The artists and animators deserve respect for their hard work and hopefully they will build their skills further from the experience they had on this production. I hope everyone who was on this film gets the opportunity to move up in the industry and get to work on their dream productions.
