So far, in the wake of Castile’s death, the NRA has been silent about the importance of the second amendment. That’s not unusual. While the NRA advocates passionately for Americans’ right to own guns, it has historically — and hypocritically — remained silent when black men, armed and unarmed, are killed by police. One reporter was able to get the NRA on the phone today.

Update: While the NRA remains silent on the shooting of Philando Castile, they have issued issued a statement Friday on the shooting in Dallas.

Update: The NRA issuing condolences for law enforcement officers but not for legal gun owners has left a bad taste in members’ mouths on Friday. Members mentioned fearing for their own lives, since Castile, a legal gun owner, had been complying with officer directions when he was shot.

One NRA member, Nick Coughlin, wrote an impassioned, angry plea on the NRA’s own Facebook feed.
