She slowly nodded as he spoke, her big brown eyes never losing focus on his expression. She didnāt seem to be in immediate danger, which was good, but on the other hand it confused her further. If he wanted her dead, he would have killed her by now, right? Or was this all a game? Perhaps she was the pawn, not the other way around.
She knew she couldnāt change him outright- that would be impossible. But even in that moment of vulnerability, he was being gentle. Maybe a little stern, but he was being honest. And Katherine was afraid- so afraid, but she knew she couldnāt afford to break just yet. But as the tightness in her chest lessened with his words, the butterflies in her stomach remained.
She looked down for a moment to intertwine their fingers, taking a breath before meeting his gaze once again. Was this what she wanted? After all, whether she liked it or not, she had to stay with him. She had to be on his side to keep herself alive. He knew what she had done, but now she was an accomplice as well. She was his accomplice, and she knew that wouldnāt bode well with the law.
Finally, Katherine opened her mouth, a corner of her lip upturning into a half-hearted smile. āI donāt think you give yourself enough credit, Michael,ā she stated with a soft hum of consideration, running her free hand down his arm, taking his other hand in hers. āI know itās dangerous, but Iād like to think that with you by my side I can handle it.ā
