“Speaking of you and Mom and tables, how was that vegan sushi? How does that even work, anyway?” A topic change to lighten the conversation was necessary, she felt; it always made her a little uncomfortable to discuss her sister with her parents, because she was so aware of how they pitted the two and compared them to one another. Competition was a virtue in show business, and the world was a stage to her parents. “All I can imagine is tofu rolled in rice and seaweed.” Although she didn’t share her father’s opinion on second best being mediocre, she didn’t bother mentioning it. It would only unravel a tangled web of inner conflict she hadn’t even worked her way through yet, and this conversation was not the one she wanted to devolve into that scary, serious talk. “Well, education can only take you so far in theatre, anyway. NYADA didn’t take either you or mom initially and you both won dozens of awards for your work. At the end of the day your talent is your driving force and what’s going to get you hired.”
“Well, as you’re probably aware, sushi doesn’t necessarily mean raw fish. Sushi actually means vinegared rice.” He’d read up on what his wife was trying to feed to him. Ever since he’d turned forty, she had a way of reminding him that he wasn’t getting any younger. His body was a temple and he wanted to know what his wife was putting into it, especially considering he hadn’t had any sort of pork since converting to Judaism. That had been his biggest sacrifice when it came to marrying her. Now, he attended all of the meetinggs at the synagogue and had since he’d converted. He’d even learned Hebrew and Yiddish, deciding to take it to the next level in order to appease her parents. Heaven forbid should he lose their blessings and gain their disapproval. “We had a sampler platter.” He said with a shrug. “The most common variety of vegan sushi is maki sushi or simply, sushi roll, which is comprised of veggie rice and nori roll, which is black seaweed. The most popular kind of sushi roll is the kappa maki, which is a cucumber roll, named after a Japanese water spirit.” The Japanese were more superstitious than his grandparents and the Chinese? Well, it was about the same in his opinion. They were all superstitious nutcases. He figured he’d done more than enough explaining. Anything else she wanted to know, she could google. That’s what he’d done and in the process, he’d stumbled across a website, called The Vegan Woman. “Between you and I, Celeste, I helped your mother get into NYADA. I could’ve helped myself get in but...” He shrugged, a wry smile pulling at his lips. “Now, where’s that pizza, before your mother comes in?”

“Awh, you and Mrs. St James went out on a date! You guys are still adorable as hell together.”
“The way you say that makes me glad you didn’t know us as teenagers...”

“They’re alright. They’ve been busy a lot lately, so.”
“Aren’t we all?”
“Which is the exact reason I’ll never go back to New York without you by my side.” she murmured softly to him as a shiver of happiness rolled through her body. “What can I say? You married a winner.” She teased right back as she relaxed against Jesse and felt weightless. Rachel breathed slowly as her lips brushed carelessly over his lips into a small kiss. She couldn’t help herself as she felt his embrace around her. “Well then it sounds like you have some planning to get to.” She responded as her hand lingered on his waist line, a light smile still taking place on her lips. A soft breath expelled quickly from her lips as his lips graced her skin. With each touch, Rachel could feel like her skin was one fire. She felt her breath grow heavy as she glanced up at Jesse. “Babe…” she muttered as gently closed her eyes.
“What made it so interesting?”
"Why does anyone smile after a date?"
She bites her tongue at the money remark, remembering quite vividly how ownership changes dramatically in their household whenever the dishes need to be done or the living room needs to be vacuumed, a complacent smile still in place. When her father mentions Schuyler, she blinks once, only allowing herself that moment of external weakness before all lamenting occurs internally, in the form of an infinite mental stream of expletives. The can-do St. James smile is still in place, show face never faltering. She is her parents’ daughter, after all. “Consider it done. I mean, half of it is that she’s super studious because she doesn’t want to disappoint you and Ma,” the brunette pointed out, nose crinkling delicately at the mention of the eighty seven. Celeste had never considered a bad grade; it wasn’t a great grade, but she was pretty sure someone had taken all her father’s high school courses for him so he could be in his show choir… “Wait, are we talking about UCLA ? UCLA qualifies as mediocre ?”
He didn't know why it frosted him when his kids acted like just because they had money, it was their money but it did. "She can study elsewhere. Your mother and I need a break from the constant drama your darling sister brings to the table." He supposed he had only himself to blame for her attitude problems but still, it didn't mean he wanted to deal with it. He wasn't very well known for his patience but he'd learned over the years that a nerd would do anything for a shiny, collector's edition Chewbacca or a comic book. He'd never gotten why they creamed themselves over such things but alas, he wasn't one to argue. He knew he wouldn't have such an easy go at it in university, so he'd paid someone to feed him the 'correct' answers when, in actuality, they had been feeding him bullshit. He had dropped out before they were able to kick him out and he'd blamed it on the fact Rachel was pregnant and needed the financial support, so that was when he'd pursued Broadway. Schoolwork had never interested him, so he didn't put forth the effort. It wasn't that he wasn't intelligent. He just didn't do things that didn't interest him. "If you'll recall, UCLA was my second choice. Second best is mediocre." He'd had a choice the day he'd vouched for Rachel. He could either vouch for himself or the woman he'd never stopped pining after. Of course, he'd never told Rachel that not even she had been good enough to get in on her own merits, though there were times he suspected that she knew. Choking wasn't a good quality to have in the business and that's why she'd been overlooked. "NYADA was my first choice." And all they'd told him was that he had promise.
“I know but i wouldn’t want to be there without you. You’re my leading man.” She muttered softly as she draped one of her arms around him. “I’ll give you that.” Rachel spoke softly as her free hand traced down Jesse’s chest and slowly moved down the rest of his body. Her mind fully focused on her husband and thoughts of getting some alone time with him seemed more and more pleasurable. In a moment though her mind had drifted back to Jesse’s words as a knowing smirk landed on her lips. “Are you asking me to remarry you Jesse? If so, I’m going to need you to get down on one knee and ask me the right way.” she said playfully, even though her mind was already starting to make plans of what it would be like.
"And you're my leading lady and always will be." He murmured, echoing her words and losing himself in the moment. "You'd better. I'm getting sick of not winning our playful arguments." He teased, moving his head to rest his forehead against hers. At her gentle touch, he shivered and closed his eyes, sucking in a slow, steady breath then exhaling. Throwing her over his shoulder seemed like a good idea but he didn't. Instead, he softly nipped at her shoulder and opened his eyes. "Mhm... Although, for it to be perfect, it'd have to be somewhere more romantic than our bedroom and following a situation that doesn't involve us about to make love." He said quietly, a low chuckle slipping past his lips as he trailed his lips up along her throat then along her jaw. His goal was to drive her to the brink and toy with her for a while longer before finally granting her that sweet release that she'd, no doubt, crave by the time he was done, turning her inside out.
“I would never do that without you. If I went back to Broadway or even New York for that matter, it would be with you by my side. We’re a team. Forever and always.” She reassured him as she watched that smile of his fall on his face. Rachel couldn’t help but smile right back at him. “Oh I think it’s you that needs to be careful Mr. St. James.” she teased as she felt his lips gently brush against her skin. “That’s nearly impossible because I love you way more then anything else in the world.”
"And we'll always be a team, babe. No amount of miles will change that." A low chuckle rumbled in his throat. "Me? Careful? Since when?" He purred, hooking his fingertips in the hem of her shirt and slowly tugging it upwards, teasing her. He had half a mind to rip it from her body but he didn't want to hurt her. His clothes felt far too tight and in that moment, all he could think about was bedding his beautiful wife. The single-mindedness soon passed, however. "Is that a fact? Well, then, you won't be opposed to us renewing our vows, will you?" He murmured against her skin. It'd have to be after his confession, of course, and they'd only be able to renew their vows, assuming she didn't divorce him first.
“I know we would of but it would of been different. Constantly having to have someone watch them and we wouldn’t of been able to really be there for them.” she added and shrugged her shoulders. Rachel cuddled up next to him and softly smiled. “I love you too.” she said sweetly as his hand trailed down her body. “Jesse!” she exclaimed as she felt the playful squeeze and leaned in to give him a kiss.
"Look, Rach..." He hesitated. "If you really want to go back to Broadway, you can fly back and forth and I'll look after the kids. Celeste is eighteen now and Schuyler is seventeen. It's not like either one of them needs a babysitter." He said softly, a Chesire grin tugging at his lips. "Careful or you'll wake the kids up..." He murmured, trailing a path of kisses from her lips to her collarbone, where he placed a gentle nip. "And for the record, I love you more."
“I didn’t think you were, but good for you, I guess.”
"Very good for me, indeed. So, how are your parents faring?"
“Nothing like that. More or less just catching up, although if I ever got that opportunity, I don’t know if I would be able to pass it up. But if we stayed in the business we wouldn’t have our kids. Although it doesn’t mean we can’t go back. Maybe get a cozy apartment, dive back into head first. I don’t think I’ll ever say no to that idea at all.”
"As I recall, love, we would've had our kids, regardless." He said with a soft chuckle as he pulled her close and dipped his head to nuzzle her neck affectionately. "I love you." He murmured as his fingertips trailed from her back down to her buttock, giving it a playful squeeze whilst a playful smirk tugged at his lips.
