Honestly such a tragedy that we didn't get Wayward Sisters.
It doesn't matter that he was 20, it doesn't matter that we knew he had to go sometime. You're never prepared for how hard it is to lose a pet. I'll miss you, Hagrid.
you know since the cdc is now recommending we wear non-medical grade face masks, we might as well all bite the bullet and make plague masks to stuff with dried herbs that will keep out the miasma that carries the disease
Time Traveler: Wait so miasma is real? Us: No, but actually yes
it’s interesting to me that miasma theory was wrong but led to a lot of technically effective practices
wearing a plague doctor outfit that basically acts as a rudimentary hazmat suit? yeah, that might help somewhat
avoiding areas where an outbreak is rampant? probably a good idea, if unnecessarily broad sometimes
clean up waste to avoid a buildup of bad air? wrong reason; right thing to do
they were wrong, objectively wrong, about what caused disease, and even then the power of human observation was such that they still figured out some of the right behaviors to adopt
The medical and public-health advances developed to contain nineteenth-century pathogens like cholera were so effective that for most of the twentieth century, the conventional wisdom among epidemiologists, medical historians, and other experts was that developed societies had vanquished infectious diseases for good. Western society had achieved “the virtual elimination of infectious diseases as a significant factor in social life,” the virologist Sir Macfarlane Burnet wrote in 1951. “To write about infectious disease,” he added in 1962, “is almost to write of something that has passed into history.” The average American who survived for around five decades at the beginning of the twentieth century lived for nearly eight by century’s end.

how have i never heard of archive.org until today.. it’s an internet library that functions just like a real one, as in you borrow the books for 2 weeks and then they are returned to the archive. you can dl pdfs as well, but you’ll lose access after the 2 week period. it’s all free tho, literally just like a real library. i was searching for a cheap copy of this serial murder book from the 90s for my thesis and i found it for free on here. there’s like.. no gimmick at all? i’m so amazed. i literally just signed up and now i’m reading a super hq scan of this book for free. i love libraries.
Watch: Complaining about political correctness says more about you than it does others.
This says, so succinctly, what I’ve always tried to say about political correctness and how it is not a new thing, nor is it a bad thing.
Please reblog, this is so important.
I needed this
Is this foreal?
Yes it’s a real service. I do volunteer work for a rape crisis support service in my city and texting is one of the features we provide as well. But just to boost its credibility, I tried it myself:

You can also text “Steve” to 741741 if you’re a young person of color. The website for more info is stevefund.org
My understanding is that it’s more multicultural and some folks feel more comfy with that in mind!

get help guys, please. if you’re hurting, don’t let that hurt consume you. seek help.
I never knew this. It’s spectacular.

Keep washing your hands! Wear a fucking mask! Get (re)vaccinated!
we seriously need to bring back the concept of “despite its flaws i still enjoy it” instead of ‘cancelling’ every fuckin thing in sight
#we need to trust that just because someone loves a thing it doesn’t mean they don’t know it’s flawed
We also need to stop insisting that everyone enjoying flawed things must put 25 cents in the Problematic Jar and recite all its failings from memory.
If I just may add: we really need to stop pretending that “I’m a Good person, ergo the thing I like is PERFECT and if you criticize it you’re an ENEMY”. You can enjoy stuff AND keep your sense of critical thinking.
I still love Harry Potter, but I don't give money to JKR
Everyone else seems to have this sense of looking at the size of the universe around them and feeling small and insignificant...but I've never felt that. Sure, the universe is big, but a lot of it feels kind of interchangeable--a bunch of inert mass floating in cold space, the same balls of fire burning as they always have, and then a bunch of literal nothing.
It's what's small that fascinates me. I look at the small world, the microcosm of bacteria and viruses and protozoa, the complex interactions of their organelles and DNA, and feel humbled that such an amazing thing is too tiny for me to see, and happens in such a way my senses would be useless to experience it anyway.
I feel humbled, but I don't feel insignificant. In fact, thinking about that is one of the most self-affirming things I can do. I was built from similar things, after all, and I exist in my own fascinating way. We all do.
